First loss to Thunder (Nuggets/Thunder recap)

Karl_medium The Nuggets lost a head scratcher tonight to the Thunder and it was Denver's first loss to Oklahoma City since their relocation from Seattle. I can sympathize with head coach George Karl in the accompanying photo after the 101-84 loss.

Star-divide

Just one night removed from finding out he'd be coaching the Western Conference All-Star team, with his Nuggets riding high on an eight game win streak, coach Karl suffered through one of the more perplexing losses of the season.

I could throw a bunch of stats around with this recap, but I don't want to. Just watching the game one can understand exactly what happened. The Nuggets, for really the first time since he's missed a game, needed Carmelo Anthony tonight and looked like a team searching for their star player.

In Melo's absences this year the Nuggets have played pretty good team basketball. There has been ball movement and we have seen different individuals step up and produce big numbers with #15 on the bench. Tonight, Denver struggled to score and struggled to find quality shots on offense. Instead of working the ball around the floor and getting to the rim Denver settled for shots on the perimeter and didn't find much luck throughout the night with their shooting touch. When the Nuggets did work the ball inside the results were not pretty as time and again the Nuggets were stripped of the ball, not ready to receive an inside pass or just flat out blew the easy bucket.

I don't think anyone expected Denver to continue winning every single game, but I also don't think anyone saw a stink bomb game coming like we witnessed tonight. During Denver's season long win streak we saw a team fueled by defense, effort and heart. Tonight all three things were missing for basically the entire game and especially in the make-or-break third quarter.

The Nuggets kept the game close in the first half and I thought that perhaps coming out of the locker room at the midway point that we'd see the effort put forth in Houston just two nights ago. But there was also something lingering in the air that just didn't quite feel right about the team, you could just feel the lack of effort and Denver was plastered in the third quarter 28-15. Perhaps another element  that didn't feel right was the Thunder keeping the pedal to the floor and not breaking from their game plan.

The Rockets found success against Denver by getting their big men open deep under the hoop and the Thunder followed suit. The Rockets went away from their game plan and started or were forced into more of a perimeter game, but the Thunder kept getting buckets all over the floor at will.

When the Nuggets don't take advantage of what wins them games (aggressive defense and very aggressive offense that results in easy baskets and free throw attempts) they struggle to win and tonight Denver just didn't seem interested in doing what they needed to do in order to secure a win.

Shots poured in from the Nuggets in one of two ways ... long jumpers or ugly attempts at the rim. Melo provides his midrange game and his patented drives to the hoop that give him the ability to get to the foul line to slow down the opponent and those elements were sorely missed tonight as the Nuggets finally looked like a team that was in need of its star.

You can't win 'em all, but all we ask for is effort and the Nuggets didn't provide much of it and lost to the Thunder for the first time. Little brother is all grows up.

Views you can use:

  • One game after going without his usual headband, Ty Lawson was back rocking the powder blue sweatband tonight.
  • The Nuggets were not credited with an offensive rebound until roughly the 2:05 mark of the 3rd Quarter ... there is the lacking in effort sign for you.
  • When the 4th Quarter started I saw Malik "Tacos" Allen on the floor and immeditely looked at the scoreboard and realized that Denver needed 40 points to get the fans a taco deal in Denver ... 40 points from Allen in 12 minutes is probably asking too much.

I like both players (Dirty Dog and Thabo) quite a bit

I’ve been extremely impressed with both since they’ve gotten “new starts” on new teams.

pretty sad

When Nene fails to collect even five boards. Is that too much to ask of our starting C?

Swats.

by BeefySwats on Jan 29, 2010 11:19 PM MST up reply actions

Nene takes himself out of games

You can see the frustration all over his face when he’s playing against a bad whistle going for the foul on all his inside attempts. I love Nene definitely thought he could be an all-star this year but it just makes you scratch your head when you watch him bully his way into 30pts 15rebounds in a loss at Sacramento then grab 2 rebounds tonight. In 32 minutes Petro would have mistakenly grabbed more than 2 rebounds. We should be fine come playoff time, it’s just weird though.

by runningdonut on Jan 30, 2010 12:11 AM MST up reply actions

Totally agreed on Nene's mind state

He pisses and moans way too much. I could have grabbed 2 boards! That “what did I doooooo?” look on his face with his arms extended in front of him and his palms up as to say “give me a break” is total weak sauce dude. He acts like a little bitch to the refs way too much, and no, he doesn’t take it hard enough to the rim. So if you do the math… yeah, pretty much he’s a bitch! I hate to say that but overall if you have to characterize someone’s play, I would have to say Nene falls closer to bitch than badass. And that sucks, because I really want to like the guy and he has potential at the C position similar to what JR has at SG. But he’s equally maddening for his soft and inconsistent play.

(I’ve never really hashed out my thoughts on Nene until that… I feel much more complete as a fan now! Heh!)

by stiffy on Jan 30, 2010 1:23 PM MST up reply actions

I agree totally that he is soft

In fact I started pointing out how Nene is soft. I read something in the DP which is going to give me a bit of compassion for this guy.
I’m not familiar with Chemo although I’ve had a bout with prostate cancer. They say Chemo takes a lot out of you. And that it takes a couple of years to regain your stamina. Maybe that’s where he is.
So right now I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt.

by samdman on Jan 31, 2010 11:37 AM MST up reply actions

Nene why do you hate me so...

he has done it before this year.. and im sure will do it again. I think its part frustration, and part worrying about fouls. I think its even part of not having a mean streak. I think sometimes he is afraid of bullyin or hurting someone. How else do you explain someone who is built like a mac truck being more soft then a hershery bar left in the sun for a day or 2. Someone needs to kick his dog, burn down his house and make his wife leave. THis will either cause him to play like the beast he can be, or write a country song.. either way its a win.

If you can't grab some Offensive Rebounds Against the Thunder

How the heck are you supposed to grab them against Pau (I look like a Llama) Gasol and the Lake show boys

by InboundingLobPass on Jan 29, 2010 11:48 PM MST reply actions

The resemblence is uncanny

My buddy always calls Gasol “goat boy” and he makes it a point to go to every Lakers game and bleat like a goat when Gasol touches the ball or take a free throw.

I try to avoid sections he sits in.

Gut check

Every team has games that remind you that they’re mortal. I hope we can dispel the myth that the Nugs can keep rolling without Melo it was clear today when the offense isn’t there we need that fall-back dump the ball into Melo plan. Durant had such a ridiculous advantage over Graham, AA and Smith it was the easiest/quietest 30pts I’ve ever seen. After games like this there’s no arguing that having another rotational big could put this team on the next level. Nene and Andersen are just not going to be game-changers consistently. What can you say about Nene’s performance tonight when a facepalm is more appropriate. There is no need to panic, all throughout the win streak our defense has been good and the offense a little inconsistent. It cost the win today but we would have been right in it had we acted like a half decent offensive team for an extra 5 or so minutes of the game. A lot of posters have pointed out that Lawson coming off the bench with Smith is not ideal especially with trigger happy JR looking to find his stroke. He would do better paired with Afflalo or Billups and Andersen off the bench. Having Melo back should bring balanced offense back to the rotation.

The only reason I’m not freaked out about it is because if you look at our history with the Thunder you could say that they owed us a beating. Credit their team but the Nugs just looked to me like they were playing third game in a row just not ready to compete and not very intense in any facet of the game pretty much.

perfect storm

there were no surprises with this game. ok city head coach scott brooks was an assistant for george karl and knows denver’s players. kmart continued with his consistent play falling 1 rebound short of another double double. where melo is missed most on offense is the opponent is forced to commit to defending him. when a team needs to use 1 and 2 defenders it opens things up for the rest of the players. durant was not forced to use energy on defense and it helped him on the offensive end.

It’s disheartening to hear about a lack of effort, but hopefully this is not the beginning of another bad streak.

Here’s hoping Melo is ready to play in San Antonio Sunday.

Seeing as it’s a nationally televised game. Hell, he’ll probably drop 40+ too.

Its one loss after 8 in a row guys

I think in our heart of hearts we know that this particular game would be difficult to win without Melo. I’m ok with this as long as we get Melo back for San Antonio.

Scott Brooks has a good thing going in OKC

The Thunder seem to be a younger version of the Nuggets, with Durant filling the role of superstar nicely.
The 3-man rotation of K-mart, Nene and Bird appears to be tiring out. the All-Star break can’t come soon enough for those dudes.

I'd really like to see Malik Allen get some minutes

He can rebound and hit open jump shots. And, unlike the more athletic Andersen and Nene, Allen knows how to box out.

Thunder played a great game.

They did everything they needed to do. They passed, they ran, they defended, they found their spots and they executed. Durant is an amazing player. They deserved this win just as much as Denver deserved this loss.
I’m not sure that Denver would have beat these guys last night with Melo. You never know, perhaps he would have done a good job defending Durant but the Nuggets lost because they had NO inside presence on offense OR defense.
Nene absolutely took himself out of the game. He was out of position and practically asleep on defense, and didn’t look for the ball on offense. He only attempted to set screens, but then never rolled to the basket. He obviously didn’t want the ball. Anderson, like usual, has no idea that he’s even supposed to play on the offensive side. What, you’re passing to ME??? And played the same crappy matador defense as usual. Let the guy fly right by and then I’ll swat the shit out of it! The problem is that he only blocks about 1 out of every 10 attempts, and is obviously out of the position for the rebound. Eazy Bucketz.
JR looked to be finally working out of his slump, but after 7 failed pass attempts to the bigs, he realized that he might as well keep shooting. He did. I don’t fault him for jacking up 15 shots (10 threes), no one else was even trying. He also played pretty decent defense, at least, while he still thought the Nuggets were in the game.

But, back when we were talking about the 11 game monster schedule that they had coming up, I said that the 2 games the Nuggs were going to lose were going to be against the Thunder and the Jazz.

No surprises here.

by NuggBuckets on Jan 30, 2010 7:58 AM MST reply actions

I also figured the Nuggets would lose this game. And that Jazz game following a back-to-back will probably go down in the L column.

You can’t win ’em all.

OKC is a much improved team this year from the team we beat twice on last-second Anthony shots/ You just know they were going to come out gunning. They had just lost two close games and were blown out by a suddenly rolling Bulls team.

That said, I didn’t expect the Nuggets to just tank in the third quarter. What are we going to do to get Nene out of his slump?

Responsibility...Karl vs. JR

Ryan Aber’s article in The Denver Post included this:

“Our offense at the end of the third quarter just destroyed us,” Karl said. “J.R.’s shot selection and our turnovers just (took) a possible comeback and took it to a 20-point game.”

I missed the game, but it does not seem reasonable to me that JR’s 4 missed shots in the second half cost the Nugs the game. Did Karl make any adjustments to change the tenor of the game?…..movement/passing game offense? increased defensive pressure? Balkman? This seems like a game where a hustling, rebounding, D-up, running end of the bench would have helped. Feedback from those that watched?

by passtheball on Jan 30, 2010 9:09 AM MST reply actions

That's typical of the Brilliant coach who is going to coach the West all star team

His efforts in the all star game will be the same. He doesn’t coach well and the players will be responsible for the out come. He is a joke at being a coach at anything. In a sense it was good to see him being out coached by Brooks.
Throwing JR under the bus AGAIN for his failure to properly find a decent rotation is indicative of his ineptness.
Balkman I’m sure could have done a better job on Durant than Graham. We will never know because arrogance is alive and well.

by samdman on Jan 30, 2010 12:10 PM MST up reply actions

Despite Karl claiming otherwise it sure seems that JR's leash is shorter . .

Whole second half the Nugs struggled to get any good shots . . and honestly, ‘cept for K-Mart hitting some outside shots and JR heating up in the second, they struggled most of the night. JR forced some shots when the Nugs threatened to “not get blow out”, but it wasn’t like anything else we got on the offense was a higher % than forced JR 3.

For the first time in ages (the first Charlotte game?), the Nugs had no way to attack and get good possessions for basically the last three quarters.

Eh

The Thunder are rapidly becoming a pretty solid team. Very much in the race for a playoff spot, and I’d put money on them to grab it. They’ve given the Lakers a couple really, really tough games this year. They aren’t the “gimme” win they have been the last couple of years.

A letdown

was bound to happen without the services of a superstar player. The defensive intensity wasn’t there, and the shooting was suspect at best.

K-Mart

Tonights game was probably kmarts best outside shooting night of his life. I think he was like 0-5 inside the paint but shooting outside he was 5-5.

Nene

he was not without mistakes, but I was disappointed to see Chauncey (and Graham…and AA) force it too much and try to make something out of nothing. Nene had it going very early, and they just stopped giving him the ball. Yeah he was out of position a few times, but it was like the entire nuggets team just didnt even bother looking for the low post option. AA is a great player, but has anyone noticed that when he takes the ball to the rim, he more often than not gets blocked, travels, or gets the ball swiped? Now that I think about it, I can think of a few instances where AA had to finish on a fast break and just flat out missed. I am NOT saying he is a bad player, but I hope AA doesn’t think he has to replace Melo in our offense. JR played a decent game, but he didn’t drive in as much. I thought K-Mart should have gotten the ball a bit more than he did.
