Billups to talk with Smith

Chris Tomasson of AOL's Fanhouse reports that Chauncey Billups will step up and talk with J.R. Smith.

With Smith again being in the news for something negative, Billups is taking a more calm approach. The Nuggets are pondering whether to suspend Smith for Monday's game against Charlotte due to his sulking on the bench when he played little Saturday against New Orleans.

Billups said he plans to talk with the guard on Monday. But it will be more to keep his head up.

"We'll talk absolutely,'' Billups said. "He's like my little brother. We'll talk.''
"I think J.R. is old enough and mature to know what's wrong,'' Billups said in an interview Sunday night with FanHouse. "I think he made a bad choice in judgment, and I think his emotions overcame him a little bit. But it happens. It could happen to me. It could happen to (Denver's Carmelo Anthony), to (Denver's Kenyon Martin). It's just so that it happened with his priors. When you think about his reputation, it's escalated ... He knows he made a bad choice. He'll be fine, though.''

Full story here.

If anyone can get in J.R.'s ear and make a difference ... it's Billups. We all know Billups was in Las Vegas to work out with Smith during the offseason and we can point to that to say, "it didn't work." But just remember, this kid is 24 years old and talks will probably need to keep happening until Smith either gets it or until Billups gives up on him. I think it's a good sign that Billups is still willing to get in Smith's ear.

In all honesty

Chauncey hits it on the head in his interview. Anyone who has played competative sports knows emotions can overtake you and cause you to act the way he did. I played travel hockey for several years. If I didn’t have my legs I would sit an be very unhappy about it. I’d bitch and cuss etc. but in a way it showed my coach how bad I wanted to perform a my highest level to help my team win. In JR’s case I hope it’s the same. I think JR wants to succeed in this league, he just knows his potential as do all of us. I think the thought of knowing he’s exceptionally gifted at something may take a toll on him emotionally in which he forces bad shots etc. I think he thinks if he drains a difficult shot, people will get off his back and he shows his potential whereas if he played like a professional and balanced his game with his attributes, he could be a starter and a great player in this league. That’s what I would tell him if I were Chauncey. Thats what I would tell someone when I was the captain of my hockey team. I hope it all works out. I love JR’s game and what he’s done outside of basketball this year with ill kids. I hope he stays a Nugget.

NATE TIMMONS

Thank you very much Nate, it seems like you are on the J.R smith staying in denver side, which is where, i feel, we should all be. Like you said, J.R played a great role in our western conference finals run, and i dont think we could afford to lose him. Thank you Nate for being postive, lets give smith a chance, he is still young, billups will help him, and i know he can turn it around. GO TEAM NUGGS

Yeah....it looks like they have no intention of trading him

which is both good and bad. I hope Chauncey has a good affect on JR

Good for Chauncey

I have to give Chauncey a ton of credit. As we all know, he is a great leader…and, as we also all know, GK is probably not going to step up and have much of a conversation with JR, much less a professional relationship.

I hope the organization can put this behind them quickly. This is going to be a very tough road trip and they don’t need this type of distraction.

Billups

I mean, Melo is what makes the Nuggets a playoff team year after year. But it is Billups who transformed this team to a title contender. He’s not saving jobs, he’s saving the franchise. I’m getting all choked up about this.

Shit, cat.

Billups is so awesome. He’ll be remembered right up there with John Elway as one of the all-time great Denver sports figures, regardless of whether the Nuggets can get past the Lakers. He’s my MVP.

Am I doomed to hell for all my rock 'n' roll?

I meant to post this here but got lost on my threads....

I hope the chat the Billups has with him goes something like this….

Chauncey-"JR, man, wtf, man, don’t screw up our championship year. Get it, man?
JR – "Chaunce, I’m dealing with alot of….."
Chauncey- "Shut the F up, JR," /smack
JR- "got it Chaunce"

earl smith and george karl should sit down with president obama. they can get all the issues out in the open and discuss the situation over a few cough drops.

maturity

Think about the events in JR’s life, and his role in them. If a person did begin to mature after these events, it would be very difficult to accept what you had done. You could very easily get down on yourself, lose confidence, even become depressed. When that happens, it would certainly impact your work. Perhaps these struggles are a sign that J.R. is working through some tough personal issues.

by KarlSucks on Jan 26, 2010 10:29 AM MST reply actions

for people with major issues in life

work often becomes a sanctuary. when work starts going bad then they have a tendency to hit the wall. no doubt smith is aware of all of the trade rumors. if he stays with denver after the trade deadline he will not have that major issue hanging over his head. a person in smith’s position can become overwhelmed when dealing with too many things at once.

STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. THE NUGGETS AT HOME
How is it possible that a Nuggets team with this much talent can be 7-5 at home?! Things have gotten so bad that fans are clamoring for J.R. Smith to return.

2. CARMELO ANTHONY
Kobe Bryant plays through any and all ailments. Melo uses any and ailments as an excuse not to play.

3. KEVIN LOVE
Just when the T'Wolves are looking better, Love stomps on Luis Scola and lands himself a two-game suspension.

4. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
The 'Cats have lost 11 straight and are now 3-21 ... in the Eastern Conference! This is what happens when you let an underwear salesman with a Hitler mustache run your team.

5. MIKE BROWN
Dr. Bunsen Honeydew (Google it!) got himself a one-game suspension for making contact with a referee.
