Kenyon Martin, Renaldo Balkman and the 2010-2011 Offseason
As we all know, Kenyon Martin's formerly-looked-upon (at least to me) "albatross" of a contract is up in 2010 (EDIT - Kenyon has a player option to stay with the Nuggets or become a free agent)
$15,852,511 is nothing to sneeze at for any team, particularly with the upcoming salary cap crunch. That much off the books opens up a LOT of possibilities for the Nuggets if he isn't resigned.
But...Kenyon has completely changed course from the middle of his contract to now. He's almost averaging a double double on the season, has become the defensive captain and has shown an unparalled commitment to winning on the team. He checks his teammates, listens to Karl and can lock down many stars on the opposing team when they are close to his size or smaller. Witness his defense on David West in last year's playoffs, for example.
Should the Nuggets resign Kenyon Martin? If so, how much money do they throw at him to keep him here when the salary cap is projected to decrease by almost the same amount as his salary?
Unfortunately...I think the Nugget's front office has already planned for this in Renaldo Balkman. He's gotten a contract extension and although he's riding the pine, he fits within the lanky PF lockdown defender mould that the Nuggets would need to replace Kenyon.
Right now, I'm conflicted. Kenyon is having a career year and has become an integral part of the Nuggets organization. The guy has firmly grown on me and I think he's a big reason why the Nuggets have been able to reach such heights. But at the same time, I wonder about the possibilities should we be able to get some wiggle room from under his salary.

Balkman
I still don’t understand why we gave him an extension.

Last year, he seemed to be an Eddie Najera type guy
But that turned out to be false.

Martin
needs to be resigned, but for less money.

If i'm not mistaken
Martin has a player option for 2010/11, so should he chose, he can stick with the contract for one year of forfeit that last year and become a free agent. I’m hoping he doesn’t exercise his option and goes into free agency so the Nuggs can resign him at a cheaper price, because he has been very productive this season.
You are not mistaken
And the dream goes that Kmart opts out of his 16.5 mill for next year and signs for 35 mill over 5 years. It will open up some cap for a 4th big and at least another 5 years of the Nugs being very competitive for the title.
Got to be carefull
Martin has been playing fantastically this season. But remember, he’s already 32. Give him a 5 year contract, and you are looking at a player with a massive injury history on the back side of his career. I think the most common mistake teams in the NBA make is giving a player over 30 a long contract. I think giving Kmart anything more than a three year deal is asking for huge trouble. And a three year deal is too short for Martin to accept any sort of salary reduction. Steve Nash is the only player I can think of that really lived up to a contract deep into his thirties. The list of players who didn’t live up to the contract is long and full of big names. The team has already made the mistake of giving Martin too much money, they must be careful not to do so again.

I agree
I love the idea of signing him cheaper but 5 years is pushing it. I really don’t want to be paying a 35-36 year old K-Mart 5 mil per year.

I bet Kmart would do it
But his agent will stab a metal fork in his own eye before he will let it happen.
I can see it happening
Kmart seems to have evolved into a wise veteran this season as would be a great asset for this team for years to come.

media day october 2009
kmart was asked about becoming a free agent after this season. he said there was no way he would exercise his player option.
pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow
he already said hes going to exercise his option
so hes signed with the nuggs next year for $16,545,454. but that would be a big bargaining chip in trades next year.
Balkman
Notwithstanding any extensions, I would be shocked if Balkman is in any teams long term plans, including the Nuggets. He is cheap insurance at the end of the bench and that’s about it, especially with GK around.
I would think
even insurance gets out of the garage once in a blue moon to make sure the engine doesn’t leak.

Yeah, I don't think Balkman will ever reach the level that KMart is currently at (great defense, solid scoring/rebounding)
He could be a much lesser version of KMart though, if he gets to play (average defense, maybe 7 pts 7 rebs a game)
Can’t see him starting on any non-lottery team though, even three or four years down the line

I believe Balkman is already under contract for next year
the Denver Nuggets Dance Team made sure to sign him up for 3 years after watching his excellent cheer leading abilities throughout the first half of this season.
March 14, 2010: The great one returns!
several examples
Didn’t Latrell Sprewell turn away an option, then get no offers on the open market? There are several others, whose names I now can’t recall, who thought they’d get more on the open market so they said no to an extension, then got much less on the open market.
On the flip side
Elton Brand a few years back opted out with the Clippers so they could sign Baron Davis, only to have EB him bolt for Philly.

Yes, there are
However, Martin’s Player Option is so freaking big that unless we offer him another crappy contract he’s gonna opt in. And seriously, it’s not like we’re competing in the 2010 sweepstakes or whatever.

I think after next season he'll re sign with us for like 3 years 16 mil or something close to the MLE
I wish he did, but he won't
There’s no way he does that. He makes 16 mil next year, and unless he suffers a career ending injury, there will be teams offering him 6-7 million dollar deals in 2011.

martin v. balkman
kmart will op in for next season. he said so at the beginning of this season. if he maintains the same level of play next year and stays with denver martin will take a long look at other teams. kmart wants a championship and will sign with the team that gives him the beat chance for a ring. the lakers have a choice between luke walton or kmart there is no doubt what they would do. kmart is from texas and all 3 teams would love to have him. he played at Cincinnati in college and the cavs would take him whether labron is there or not. balkman still has a major upside. i give him major credit for staying positive in spite of a lack of playing time. the off season will make or break his career. if he goes to florida, indulges in home cooking and works on another dui he will not go any where. balkman stays in denver and commits to the weight room and improving his game he can have an outstanding career. what balkman should do is talk to chauncey and see if he can rent his old bedroom at his parents house in park hill. billups dad ray can help balkman with his game and faye (chauncey’s mom) can cook for him. when those two get done with him balkman will be the second coming of horace grant.

Ha
Rec’d. I really wish we’d see more of Predator, he was my favorite player when he was filling in for Melo last season.
Swats.
He's in
He will be making $16 or $17 million next year, a big reason why we re-signed Balkman. Naldo is great insurance at that price because he’s locked up for a few years and it will eliminate the need to swap out minimum salary guys every year.
Kenyon has shown even to haters how he is an important part of what the Nuggets are doing. Nuggets were the worst team in the league when he signed. His big salary has still limited us from finding a project to eventually replace Kenyon. One of the biggest mistakes of the offseason was trading Steven Hunter and a pick for cap relief. First, Hunter’s expiring contract would be a more valuable as the deadline approaches and could have helped in a deal for Jeff Foster (Nugs tried to trade Graham and spare pieces instead). Second, we gave up our first round pick. The Nuggets should try and draft a young PF with Kenyon’s skillset to learn under him. Nugs don’t have any picks however and it’s unlikely we will have someone ready to step in when Kenyon is ready to move to the bench.
It’s too early to tell but I think Kenyon might get offers for an MLE type contract when he’s a free agent. I could see him signing a Birdman like deal to stay with teh Nuggets which would be good for all sides involved. I’m still undecided on Balkman, but he is great to have on the bench as an emergency plan slash injury insurance.
Man, the reality hits harder and harder every day the trade deadline approaches
The Nuggets just don’t seem to have any trade chips with which to pull off a major deal. No sizeable expirings, no draft picks, can’t trade Ty Lawson/Nene/JR (well maybe JR), not much cap space to work with.

Because it's getting pretty obvious that the Nuggets need more to make it to the Finals

Kmart Finally Living Up to His Contract
I have to say, Kmart is finally earning his contract this year. He finally got serious about staying in shape, and he is playing much better at this weight and has become a real leader off the court. The nuggs will probably play out this season with what they have and then make a decision on a trade by the 2011 trade deadline when he will be Highly tradeable due to an expiring big contract. No way you resign Kmart to anything more than a 3 year deal worth 18- 20 million because of his age and injury history.
