J.R. Smith Suspened 7 Games
I find this absolutely ridiculous. How much does a man have to do before he is forgiven for reckless driving? I believe that he has endured enough.
First, J.R. Smith got a month in jail. I've never spent a month in jail and i don't plan on it. I think most of us believe that going to jail for a month of your life is already quite the consequence. Being in a barred room and only being allowed an hour outside sounds like living in hell.
Second, Smith lost his best friend. J.R. had no intentions that morning thinking, "I'm going to drive recklessly and kill my closest friend. A friend from my childhood." I don't know about all you people reading this, but the loss of a loved one is one of the worst experiences I've ever had. I can't imagine what it would be like to lose your best friend, and know it was you're own fault. I think it's amazing and very courageous for Smith's friend's mother to accept J.R.'s apology. She must be a strong woman.
I think J.R. has endured enough pain. I think the NBA is kicking him while he's already down. I drive recklessly with my friends in the car sometimes, with the music blasting and speeding a little bit, but I never have the intention of hurting anyone. I don't agree with the suspension. Jason Richardson was only suspended two games for driving under the influence. I believe this is much more dangerous than driving recklessly. This is just a case of J.R. being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He didn't have any bad intentions. Give the man a break
P.S. - I'm not saying it's okay to drive recklessly, but give J.R. a break. He has been through enough punishment. I don't see why the NBA insists on suspending him. They've already gotten their point across.
Write respectfully of your SB Nation community and yourself.

there is nothing that the nba can do to j r smith that will hurt him more than what he did to his friend and himself. orlando lost one of their starters for 10 games for using a banned substance that otherwise was perfectly legal to purchase and use under criminal law. there is something totally out of wack with that. i am comparing apples to oranges here. use a legal supplement purchased over the counter and get suspended for 10 games. kill a guy when violating a traffic law 7 games. j r paid a major price and will pay every day for the rest of his life. if the nba suspended him 70 games it will never be the worst thing that has happened to him.
its stupid!!
c’mon is the NBA serious about this?? higgyhoops12 is completly right when he says J.r has gone through enough. he has been punished enough! J.R knows what he did wrong and he pleaded guilty to his actions. He did his time without complaint and now he should put this part of his life behind him. the NBA is just dragging it out and making it harder for J.R
The suspension has one positve outlook...
it could make our FO fell that we are forced to make a trade to keep up and we will…. something like Stephen Jackson, Yi, David Lee, Kirk Hinrich, BRendan Wright, Turiaf, Murphy, Foster or Gasol
just anything
I'm not sold on Yi.
Have you seen recent photos of him? He looks waaaaaay to bulked up since the end of the season to not be on ’roids

How does JR get suspended for seven and Richardson only two games?
If you’re gonna argue it’s because of the DUI, then JR shouldn’t be included in this.
I regret that JR’s friend life was taken. Let this be perfectly clear.
JR paid his debt twice already, you can’t tell be that he doesn’t regret the fact that his friend was killed and he served time. Now Hitler and his storm troopers jump on the guy and gives him a seven game suspension. What a crock of shit.
past driving record
was taken into consideration when dishing out the harshness for JR on this one

I'm pretty sure
the past driving record was also taken into consideration when he was sentenced a month in jail too. So it gets put into consideration twice?

Yes
because it was the court that sentenced him to jail. Honestly, I think the suspension is valid. He killed someone and even if it was an accident, that doesn’t make his friend any less dead or his friend’s family any less devastated. That being said, the timing on this is pretty crappy. They should’ve suspended him when the incident happened, not after he got out of jail.
And I say that
as someone who actually likes JR and thinks that he gets treated unfairly by the media. Things like the Twitter incident are total bs but in this case he did something wrong and should be punished. I think he’ll learn alot from all this and come back a more mature player this year.
there really hasn't been any follow up on how JR is doing at the basketball camp in Vegas, hope he and Billups really work it this off season
Billups going to visit him Vegas is like a big story for minute but since then theres been no word about it…

Can we call him
“Papa Big Shot” or “Chaunceyfather?”

You get suspended by your employer for an accident?
Bad enough he gets jail time for an accident. People speed, it is the USA. Sorry someone was killed but like you said it was an accident. He gets jail time, suspended by the Nuggets, and suspended by the NBA. Crock of shit if you ask me.
