Wally: "They [the Nuggets] are very interested in me"...
The Denver Post's Woody Paige quotes free agent Wally Szczerbiak as saying the Nuggets are interested in him.
Paige goes on to advocate for the Nuggets to sign Szczerbiak, citing his love for Wally's father from his ABA days and the younger Szczerbiak's career stats. No offense to Paige, but I trust the Nuggets are looking closely at Szczerbiak's clutch shooting percentage from the last two seasons rather than his dad's ABA game tapes.
Everyone has a different definition of clutch shooting percentage, but I'd specifically like to know Szczerbiak's shooting percentage when the shot clock and game clock were within three seconds and what those percentages look like when the game is within five points. Because from my cheap seats view last season, it seemed like Szczerbiak frequently missed crucial shots that could have put Cavalier opponents away for good. But I'd be happy to be proven wrong/ignorant. (It should be noted that Szczerbiak doesn't even show up over at 82games.com's clutch shooting table for last season, but neither does Denver Stiffs' preference for the open wing slot, Steve Novak.)
The Nuggets unquestionably need a drop dead shooter and to be fair to the Nuggets (if they are indeed interested in Szczerbiak) the pickings are slim out there. Would you rather have Flip Murray than Szczerbiak? Rashad McCants? Kareem Rush? I think I'd rather have Wesley Person back than any of those guys. Most of Nuggets Nation's preference would be Novak. But as several readers pointed out yesterday, the Clippers cap flexibility almost guarantees they'll match whatever paltry offer the Nuggets could throw at Novak.
Could Wally Szczerbiak be the next Denver Stiff? If Szczerbiak really wants to be a Nugget, he should head to his local tattoo parlor immediately.

Ugh
I can tell already that Szczerbiak is going to be one of the most controversial Nuggets players in recent history. Seems like he is one of those dreaded love him or hate him players. I can think of about 500 D-League/FIBA/Euro players I would rather have on the Nuggets than Wally. Yet, the comments seem to be split about 50/50 in favor of signing Szczerbiak. I just hope someone else comes along and swoops him away before our FO gets a chance to sign him. Otherwise look for lots of controversy with this guy on the roster throughout the entire season.

Fuck, noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
God damn it. :(
I would be happier if we brought in one of our summer league guys over Szczerbiak. He’s never shown me anything worthwhile about his offensive game, save for some pretty rainbow 3s, but his defense is AWFUL.
Please don’t do this, FO.

He's basically Kleiza but with more experience
If that’s what we’re looking at, a Kleiza clone, I think he’s a good fit, but I don’t know if that’s what we should do, look to clone the roster spot. I thought we’d take the chance to add some more all around game there, and the Szcerb is a defensive ole! player just like Kleiza was but probably a step (at least) slower than him and thus unable to run the break as effectively, so he’s got about a break even on the +/- comparo to Kleiza.
I liked Wally coming out of college (props because played for my former gym teacher Charlie Coles at Miami of Ohio) but he hasn’t really shown me much. I would be glad to have his shooting stroke in our back pockets though. Pickins are indeed slim.

Er, methinks Linas Kleiza enjoys contact a bit more than Wally Szczerbiak
Linas has his defensive woes, but the guy is significantly tougher than Wally.
Still, at this point in his career Szczerbiak can probably accept a role, and it’s a role the Nuggets need filled. One can see them opting for a veteran shooter over some summer project; they don’t need to be guessing what they have on their bench, if they’re aiming to make another run.

I yelled so many horrible, zoolander related comments to Wally when the Nugs played the T-wolves a few years ago in the playoffs.
I doubt he remembers this or anything (even though I know he heard me) but it will still be really awkward if I have to cheer for him now.

Ha ha! The old 180 if he joins our team! Gotta love it.

Does it really matter?
He’s a vet that will sign for cheap and can play a bit. He’ll play 10 minutes if that and will shoot maybe twice in the clutch all season. We need to fill three spots and this isn’t a horrible option. Sign him and be done with it.
FYI – Looks like the Clips took Butler from NO. Does this impact their cap space enough to affect their ability to match on a Novak offer?
by Pusherman on Aug 12, 2009 12:05 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Great Point
Butler is due 3.9 mill mext year and actually that puts the Clips right at or a little below the cap. That would make it a little more difficult for them to match an offer for Novak. So maybe something could still happen? Who knows. Go nuggets!

Good for whats left
There are a hundred other players I would like to see fill that wing spot. But for whats out there and what we would be willing to give up for trade I don’t think we can do much better than wally for this year. When I look at the other free agent wings I don’t see anyone who could contribute. Maybe McCants but there is probably a reason he has yet to catch on with anyone.

Butler
What I’m wondering is, couldn’t the Nuggets have offered up a similar package (ummm…..ONE, yes one, future second rounder) for Butler, he would be a much better replacement then either Wally or Novak. McCants is an A-typical Nugget of two years ago, talented, poor atttitude, lacks discipline, but hes more of a 2 guard then a sf, however he does hail from the great North Carolina and won a title there so GK probably would like him

HMM
Well, we’d definitely had to add in a trade exception too. And I’m not sure if they are gonna pay 7.8 million (including luxury tax) for a backup SF. Wally isn’t terrible, but Novak is just better. Anyone think we could offer a trade exception or something else for Jarvis Hayes? Nets need to shed salary, and either he or Yi or Eddie goes.

question
Why again is Kleiza NOT on the stiff list?
by Zachm219 on Aug 12, 2009 1:30 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
WHAT?!?!
Kleiza shouldn’t be on the stiff list. You can’t blame the guy for trying to make the most money available to him. Athletes only have a few years to make as much money as possible, as their careers can be shortened by injury or younger talent unseats them. If Burger King offered you $2 more an hour to work there, you telling me you wouldn’t leave McDonald’s? If anyone or anything should be on the stiff list it should be the NBA salary cap rules. The league should have a hard cap like the NFL.

I've got a hunch
that bringing Wally aboard the team will make Hanzlik shed one lonely tear. As if to say “That’s one damn fine Stiff right there. A child after my own heart.”
Seriously bringing Wallyworld will all but garuantee that he will get burnt by the SF’s around the league whenever Melo is on a break, or JR has too many fouls. I see this as trading down. He’s an older, slower version of the guy we yelled at for 82+ games for his style of play. At least with LK we could say ‘Ah he’s young and he’ll bounce back’ not so with Wally. There aint too much bounce left in him.

He had horrible hands. The man couldn’t catch a cold.

Wally is done. The guy was terrible in the playoffs last season and all he was asked to do was just stand there and shoot when the ball was passed to him. We need a guy like him on the team who can hit the 3, but we need a guy who can actually do it at this point in time. There are many others out there who can, Wally is inept. It’s not too big of a deal, hes a vets min guy but I would prefer Novak since the Clips just brought in more cap.

wally sucks
the last thing the nugs need is an old, slow white guy that cannot jump, defend or rebound. what little he will give on the offensive end he will kill you on defense. denver can add 3 players to help now and in the future. steve novack from the clippers is a start. aaron gray from the bulls will help at center. 7 feet, 270 lbs., and six fouls per game. the final player is luther head from the heat. novak played at marquette for tom crean and was there 4 years. at 6’10" he can play both forward positions. 91% free throws and 44% from 3 point land. gray played 4 years at pittsburd for jamie dixon in the big east. he is a big body that can match up with shaq, dwight howard and the lakers big men for limited minutes. luther head played with deron williams at illinois for coach bruce webber in the big ten. that team played north carolina in the ncaa championship game. he was there 4 years too. head can play both gaurd positions, hit the 3 point shot and is a lock down defender that can rebound. he is 6’3" same height as billups and unrestricted free agent. bring back anthony carter and the roster is at 14 players. the nugs will pay some tax but will get the most bang for their buck. it has to be cheaper than wally and or lk.

College resume kinda goes out the door
Once you’ve been in the league a few years… Because once there’s NBA tape and scouting, that trumps college records, pedigree, etc. I’d take Head as a shooter for sure though!
by stiffy on Aug 13, 2009 9:11 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Odd that head found his minutes cut the last two seasons.
He was averaging roughly 28 minutes per game his first two seasons and then in his next two they were cut to roughly 17 minutes a night.
He had a great year shooting the ball in 2006-07 … he went 177-401 from three-point land aka 44% … that’s insane!
The next season when his minutes dropped his shooting followed … only 79-225 or 35% in 2007-08 … then he was waived due to a foot injury and signed with Miami early last season where he hardly saw the floor and played in only 10 games for the Heat before he suffered a season ending broken hand in early April.
Head and McCants would basically fill the same role … and I’d prefer Head’s defense if he were to get a shot at making the team … but minutes would again be hard to come by and a reason he signed with the Heat was for playing time.
In Denver he’d battle for playing time with Billups and Lawson at point guard (assuming Denver chose Head over A.C.)
and at shooting guard he’d battle for minutes with J.R. and Afflalo. If Denver brings back A.C. then that wipes out the possibility of Head I would think …

Bring Back AC
we need a true point gaurd backing up Billups besides the Rook. It sucks, but Billups can’t be asked to play a load of minuts, and we need a consistant back up point gaurd. If things work out – maybe its Lawson, but to play it safe we better have AC around.
Nothing effects the offense quicker than the PG, and it doesnt get much worse than a SG pretending he is a PG, running around in a dribbling frenzy with fear all over his eyes. (Sorry J.R.)
by DannyG23 on Aug 13, 2009 11:20 AM MDT up reply actions 1 recs
I'll name one thing worse then that...
AC catching the ball WIDE OPEN, not a man within 8 ft of him and shooting the damn ball off the side of the backboard. I’m sorry, I try to like AC I really do, but a lot of times when he is on the court he is simply the worst player out there, period.
by Nuggs Philosophizer on Aug 13, 2009 11:36 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I really dislike AC.
I get so frustrated watching when he is in the game. He seems to do some strange things while playing and cant shoot. It would be a crime if Lawson doesnt get all of his minutes(if AC is resigned) because Ty is just gonna get better.. I think Ty is gonna have a decent season anyways tho.
I also HAAAATTTEEE the time that both Billups and AC are on the floor together. Do we really want AC guarding Kobe? I mean Kobe is gonna do Kobe regardless. But AC?
by GottaLoveMelo on Aug 13, 2009 1:35 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'll name another thing as bad as that
AC takes too many shots from the perimeter, period. His shot chart showed that he sucked at shooting in general, but especially on long twos and 3-pointers, of which he shot WAY TOO MANY for a damn 6’1" PG who shoots 23% from long range. Also, he is not very talented at throwing the ball inbounds. Last of all, AC averaged 2 TO’s per game while playing only 22.9 minutes. That’s just insane. For comparison, Chauncey averaged 2.2 TO’s per game on 35.3 minutes. Coby Karl, anyone?
by LACK on Aug 14, 2009 6:36 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
A little unfair to comment on his T.O. and not his steals . . .
In his last two years in Denver he only average 1.35 TO per steal . .Willing to wager one of the better PG rates in the league. By comparison , Billups was at 1.9, Rondo was @ 1.4, Nash was 4.5. AC has weakness, but there are things he brings to the table. Statistically, the easiest possession in basketball is after a steal.
by Frontrange on Aug 16, 2009 3:55 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, but the plain fact that AC goes for the steal so much should cause some uneasiness in our stomachs. When he goes for a steal, he gets out of position of the defensive scheme. Sometimes, he does manage to get the steal and then proceeds to lead the fastbreak. But more often than not, he isn’t able to get the ball and thus leaves his defender open. And this is only on attempted steals on passes. When AC attempts to steal from someone while they are dribbling, it’s even worse, as when he goes for it he becomes off balance and would allow the offensive player to drive past him (or, if they aren’t quick enough, then they just shoot over him). Don’t misread this, AC is an amazing guy for a third point guard. It’s just that he has numerous flaws.
"I shoot so many 3's because I can't shoot 4's"

AC Sucks
You have the nerve to say Jr is running around in a dribbling frenzy with fear all over his eyes. Yeah right
What do you have covering your eyes? AC is the last POS that the Nugs need to be the back up pg
Just because he knows the system? What flipping system? The one man turnover is pathetic, 21% from the three point line.
When CB goes to the bench there’s no scoring from the pg position. I don’t know how many times I pointed this out to Bee, GN, Stranger, and the rest when we chatted about the games.
ANYONE EXCEPT AC
by samdman on Aug 13, 2009 3:36 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m afraid to agree with you, because any + comments on AC get shot down hard, but I’ll jump on in. We are too good of a team to put our whole season on the line with a rookie point guard as the only backup for a 34 year old point guard. Does this mean that I don’t think Ty will be able to handle the job? No. However, he has yet to play a single minute of real NBA basketball. Point guard position takes time to learn and grow. Ask any veteran (i.e. Billups) what position is the hardest to learn and he’ll tell you point guard. Ty was great in college, and if we were a developing team, he would be a tremendous backup. But we need to win now and not in three years. I love AC and think he is a great backup point guard. I want to see him back and coming off the bench for about 15 minutes a game. Obviously, I realize I’m in the very small minority on that opinion.
by BrianD on Aug 13, 2009 3:58 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm with you man
It isn’t just about 3pt% and scoring ability – although clearly those things are important. As a back up (and not the only back up considering Ty) there is no way we are going to find somebody better than AC. I have watched him make mistakes often – but I have seen him do some cool shit too (like actually block Kobe), and there are few players that work as hard as him.
In the end it comes down to finding a backup PG – and SG’s are not PG’s. If anyone can think of a better back-up to split time with Lawson than AC (for the same amount of money) then I’m all for it – I just dont think it can be done.
by DannyG23 on Aug 13, 2009 4:52 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Then what is it?
It’s not about the 3pt% or scoring ability? Isn’t it the team who has the most points at the end of the game who wins?
How many points per game does Chauncey avg? Does AC avg one fourth of his points per game? AC had one good game last year and one game winning shot the year before.
His assist rate is fair because he knows he can’t shoot and is always looking to pass. That’s not going to cut it. We need someone who isn’t affraid to take the WIDE OPEN shot and MAKE IT.
Do you remember the time where Melo was emphatic of AC being pulled out of the game? Do you remember the imbounds pass screwup? How many ill advised passes has he given away?
As a backup pg anyone who can push the ball up court fast can take his position.
Clearly AC is the weakest link and every team we play loves to see CB7 take a rest. because they know they are going to pick and roll us to death.
by samdman on Aug 13, 2009 7:11 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
First of all
1. do you honestly think a PG is judged only on 3pt% and scoring ability – or even that these are the only things that contribute to a team having the most points? making baskets isn’t always done individually (mostly it isn’t) and stopping the other team from scoring is as (if not more) important than scoring yourself.
2. “We need someone…” isn’t going to cut it dude – if you can’t suggest a better option for a 3rd PG than AC – than what is the point of suggesting anything at all?I know AC isn’t the best backup in the league but give the man some credit. He is a long way from being as bad as you make him out to be – half the problems you have with him can be attributed to Karl playing him at really inappropriate times – and the other half can be attributed to your almost complete lack of basketball knowledge (as outlined in part 1)
I’m not saying we should all grovel at AC’s feet or something – simply that he is our best option as a 3rd PG – and not really that bad of an option at that. I think you forget that with Lawson around the idea would probably be to slowly transition him into the primary backup, limiting the 3rd PG’s minutes to near nothing by the end of the season. for what we need him for AC is the only way to go bro.
by DannyG23 on Aug 13, 2009 10:43 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Doesnt matter if AC is back or not to me. He SHOULD play the same minutes that Jason Hart played this year because after about 10 games Lawson should eat all of the backup PG duties. There is no way he doesnt do work this year.

He’s big 7’ and averaged 2 rpg, 3ppg, and 1 blg last season in ten minutes per game. He’s a restricted free agent from the Mavs but they’re at 75.5 mil and we’re only at 68.1 in cap. The Mav’s don’t really need them since they already have Dampier, Dirk, Marion and Gooden. Any thoughts?

Drop Dead Shooter
Okay, I don’t by any means think that Wally will help Denver become a Championship team, but he will go a very long way in filling the gap Klieza left. They are about the same in scoring and rebounding, but Wally is actually a much better 3-point shooter. Klieza has only shot 34% for his career from three and Wally has shot 40.6%. McCants is also under 40%. Maybe Wally’s not clutch, but do we really need that? At the end of the game we will have JR, Billups, and Anthony, plus probably a big man and then someone else (Lawson, maybe Afflalo) on the court. Afflalo shot 40% from three last year…

Aaron Gray
I really like the idea of Aaron Gray. He’s big, 7’, 270 lbs. He averaged 4 rebounds and 4 points for every 13 mpg. The only problem with it is that the Bulls would probably match our offer since they’re only a million dollars above us in cap space (69 mil to our 68 mil). His qualifying offer is only 1 mil and it doesn’t look like the Bulls signed it?
Another option is trading for Tyrus Thomas from the Bulls. The Bulls don’t seem to be too happy about him because of his inconsistent play. At times he has showed promise but also sometimes it seemed like he didn’t care. I think he would always try his hardest in Denver because he wouldn’t be guaranteed minutes with Nene, K-Mart, Birdman, and Melo. Chauncey and Company would get him to get to achieve his full potential and become a great NBA player. (Maybe take K-Mart’s defensive job in 2011)

Tyrus Thomas would cost too much...
What would we have to give up to pry him away from Chicago? Plus we are saddled with K-Mart’s contract for at least another year.

bench players
luther head’s nba career is similar to billups. is he a point or shooting gaurd? chauncey had a shoulder injury and both are 6’3". college pedigrees and careers do make a huge difference in the nba. look at jr smith and kwamee brown. they could,ve used college coaching and experience. a college degree has a big impact off the court. pitt’s coach jamie dixon coached the usa u19 team to the gold medal this summer. tom crean is bringing indiana’s program back and his top assistant has marquett right where they were when crean was there. bruce webber had deron williams at point, dee brown at shooting gaurd and 6’3" luther head at small forward. that team played north carolina for the ncaa championship. that kind of experience does translate very well now and in the future. looking down the road to the 2011-12 season when kmart and billups contracts expire these moves could have a huge impact. the nugs do not want to be like the knicks and overpay big dollars for extended years. these 3 can help now and in the future ant minimum tax.

sign and trade
you could use lk’s nba rights in a sign and trade for either steve novak or aaron gray. there is also a 3 team trade possibilities out there. if lk ever plays in the nba again he needs to start with a new agent. carmello anthony dumped the same guy lk has now. a year ago lk refused to sign a 4 year 25 million deal. time to turn the page and put lk behind us. the nugs can have a better bench than last year. the nugs will not have to do a major rebuilding job after kmart and billups are done.

Possibilities
1. Luther Head- UFA- I like him, he’d be a good addition, BUT, do we really need him? He doesn’t look like the greatest passer with just 2.3 assists per 24 minutes in his first four seasons. Chauncey averaged 4 assists per game in his first four seasons. He wouldn’t really fit in since we already have J.R. and Afflalo for our future SG’s.
2. Aaron Gray- RFA- I love it, he’s the big guy the Nuggets need. Big body at 7’, 270 lbs. Good rebounder and average scorer. I think he has lots of potential.
3. Steve Novak- Clippers- only making 1 mil this year. Great 3 pt shooter. 6’10 but i heard he plays like he’s 6’4. Good posibility for Melo’s backup. I’d love to have him in Denver. He’d really spread the court of us and the Nuggets wouldn’t lose much.
4. DeAndre Jordan- Clippers- only making 736 k this season. Looks to be a promising center for the future, but with Camby and Kaman, he might not have a lot of playing time next season. He averaged 4 points, 5 boards, and 1 blocked shot last season in 14 minutes a game. He’s 6’11 and 250 lbs. He looks too promising for the Clippers to trade, but with Camby and Kaman’s large contracts.. Who are they going to sit?
5. Johan Petro- RFA- I would like to see what Petro can do. He didn’t get much of an opportunity to show what he could do last year.
6. Joey Dorsey- Houston Rockets- Dorsey isn’t the greatest offensive player but he’s dominant defensively. He averaged 14 rebounds, 3 blocks and almost 10 points per game while shooting 62% from the field. He’s only 6’8 but he’s 270 lbs and i see him being the next Ben Wallace. He would be a great pickup for the Nuggets

Wally and McCants Would Help
I think both Wally and McCants would help the Nuggets in different ways. Wally is the spot up shooter that can nail open 3’s. The Nuggets have needed a true spot up 3-point shooter for a long while (no, I don’t put Klieza in this category – - way too inconsistent). McCants is a slasher and can flat out score. He would be able to help with bench scoring with JR moving to the starting 5 and Kleiza gone. Points off the bench look like a real weak spot for the Nuggs right now…

If we need a slasher, then we might as well get Joey Graham (However, we don't need one at all)
Plus, Joey is 3 inches taller and a law-abiding person. However, we don’t really need a SG slasher off the bench, which is why McCants would make absolutely no sense. Well actually, McCants can knock down the occasional 3, but i still hate him for his bad shot selection and inability to do anything else except shoot the ball. At least Novak has the height to prevent shorter SF’s to shoot over him.

Wally = efficient shooter
McCants = highly inefficient
I don’t think McCants gives anything JR Smith doesn’t. You need a solid defensive player behind him or else what’s the point, right? Otherwise you’re gonna see Karl use Carter even more.

I like the mentioned idea of Steve Novak to somewhat replace Kleiza much more than Szczerbiak for Denver
I would probably consider also in no particular order Pops Mensah Bonsu, Gerald Green, Joey Graham, Robert Kurz, Desmond Mason, James Singleton, Ime Udoka. Some of those bring good defense, good rebounding, good slashing. But if the idea is to rather have another outside shooter, Novak should be it.
