A sign-and-trade idea: Linas Kleiza for Shane Battier

If the Nuggets are not able to land Grant Hill (and with the Celtics chasing him ... it's likely he'll "go green"), and if Linas Kleiza is not totally in the Nuggets plans and Dahntay Jones doesn't get the multi-year offer from Denver that he wants ... what about a sign-and-trade deal for Shane Battier of the Houston Rockets? Let's discuss the details after the jump.

Star-divide

If the Nuggets are not able to retain Dahntay Jones then the roster will be sorely lacking that "defensive specialist" that we all grew to love in the playoffs. Well, Shane Battier's name has come up in some recent trade rumors and the Rockets might be looking to re-tool a bit and get younger with the questions marks surrounding Yao Ming's and Tracy McGrady's health.

My proposed trade:

Denver receives: Shane Battier. 2009-10 salary $6.8 million.

Houston receives: Linas Kleiza (sign-and-trade), Steven Hunter ($3.69 million/expiring contract), and a future 1st Round Pick.

Why Houston does this deal: Linas Kleiza would provide them with some much needed scoring pop and another young player to build around with Aaron Brooks, 24, Trevor Ariza ,24, Kyle Lowry, 23, and Carl Landry, 25. Kleiza turns 25 years-old in June and if you are a Houston Fan reading this and want to know more about L.K.'s game ... just check out my Exit Interview on him.

Kleiza probably wouldn't command more than $3-$4 milion per-season, Hunter's contract comes off the books after the season, and the Rockets save having to pay Battier's $7.3 million for 2010-11 season. The deal would save Houston about $3.3 million in the 2010-11 season ... a big free agent offseason. And down the road, the Rockets get a first round pick that could pan out.

Why Houston doesn't do this deal: Battier is a very valuable team glue guy and defender. And there is always the case that the Rockets want nothing to do with L.K. after inking Trevor Ariza.

Why Denver does this deal: The Nuggets would be getting another quality character guy for the locker room and a great defender. Battier averaged 7.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists last season. For his career he's a 44% shooter, shoots 38% from three-point land, and 82% from the charity stripe. He knows his role on teams and would not command the ball on offense, but would be a perfect corner three-point shooter (much like L.K. tried to be.)

Battier solves all of Denver's issues for Melo's backup and is a major defensive upgrade to anyone they had at the backup small forward or shooting guard spots last season. Battier is very long at 6'8'' and makes life very difficult for Kobe Bryant. Battier will be 31 years-old in September and has a lot of life left in his legs. He played alongside Ron Artest in Houston and would be a nice complimentary guy to have next to Melo or J.R. Smith.

Plus, Battier is only under contract for the next two seasons ... so he's basically a low-risk. And if things worked out in Denver, I'm guessing Battier would re-sign with the Nuggets for less than the $7.3 million in the final year of his contract.

Why Denver doesn't do this deal: The Nuggets would be giving up a lot for Battier in some people's eyes. But at some point you have to trade potential (Kleiza and a first round pick) for proven veterans (Battier) that solve your team's major issues (defending Kobe.)

i thought about this....

he prob wudnt back up melo tho, hed start at sg and we play big, he could guard opposing sf and melo guards sgs; It would rly cause match up problems cuz of his lengths i love the idea

I like it

but the Rockets GM really likes Battier. They’ve even had write-up’s about how Battier is a great NBA player despite the mediocre offensive output and rebounding. It’s his intangibles. If we could work it out, I’m all for it, I just don’t see Houston giving up their best defender. Although, depending on Yao’s foot, they might be more willing to go younger and forsake this year to have a solid nucleus for the next 4-5. Plus, Battier is a big upgrade over Dahntay Jones.

I like the idea

Battier is a proven vet that can hit that open 3. hes a great defender. But I liked how Jones used to use fouls just to take cheap shots and rattle players a lot. Battier doesn’t do that. I know it sounds ridiculous but remember when KMart (yes i realize that this is not a Dahntay Jones example) knocked Nowitzki to the ground in game 1? Prior to that Nowitzki was 6-6 and after that he went like 1-7 and the Mavs offense went stale. I want players that are tough and are going to push people around and set that tone. Dahntay gives us that. Can I have both?

Draft Pick?

I like the idea, but what first rounder do they have to trade? 2011?

Draft pick

I’m not positive but I think they have a draft pick in the first round next year. They traded a draft pick for Ty Lawson in this draft, but it is my understanding that it was Charlotte’s draft pick to begin with.

Draft Pick

I thought the deal was decent, but I rather not see Denver get rid of any more draft picks.

Theres no reason to not love it.

Shane is that guy that every title team needs, he can guard 1-4 if needed, and hit open shots. He just makes the whole team better. If the rockets are looking to sell, there will be 30 teams interested in this guy. Constant class, leader, hardest worker on the floor, maybe I have ever seen. Watching him guard kobe, and kobe doing that stupid head shake when he would score on him, and shane would just run down and play offense, then be right back on kobe like glue the next play. He’s everything that is right with the game of basketball today. I wish i would clone the guy and make 12 of him for the Nuggets. I feel very strongly on the subject as you can see.

12 clones of Shane Battier would produce roughly 60 points per game. The Nuggets would never win!

Well hopefully they would hold the opposing team to 59 a game.

I like it, but I agree with the fellow sentiments of why would Houston part with Battier

With Yao likely done for, Artest gone, and McGrady maybe coming back, I don’t see why Houston would trade one of their key players, especially after this past season where Battier basically got them some big wins in the playoffs. Now if Houston says, "f—- it, Yao is gone and McGrady is not a reliable player, we are going to blow up this thing and start over, then the trade makes sense on their part since they will get a good scoring threat and some cap space relief to sign a player like Bosh next season who can help in the low post.

Roster

If you look at the roster that they have…without Yao….that is a LOttery team. Besides Shane and Brooks they dont have much to blow up to start over. I have though fot the past 3 years now that the rockets were a mediocre team and now, they are just trash. T-Mac can’ t play anymore, hes done. I agree that i dont think they would trade Shane to the Nuggets, but this team is just not good.

Mr. Clutch is right

I’m all for it, if we’re going for Grant Hill Shane would provide everything he does and more. If Houston were to shop him offers would be flying in from all over the place. Unfortunately I think someone beats this offer and gives the Rockets a Center or a decent 2 guard they are trying to get. Steven Hunter is garbage, it’s unknown whether or not he can even play next year and the Rockets don’t have a glaring need for his expiring contract, they already have the biggest and best expiring contract as it is. Hopefully, LK can bring us back something like Shane. Genius move by the front office if they could make it happen

by runningdonut on Jul 8, 2009 3:50 PM MDT reply actions

Cleveland signing Anthony Parker?

This means that neither Toronto nor Cleveland have enough cash to give LK an offer sheet. That would leave the Pacers as the only team with interest who could bid up the price for Kleiza.

When free agency started I was almost sure Kleiza would get offers the Nuggets would not want to match, and he’d be traded. Now it seems a little more likely we’re getting LK back on a 1-year rental if we want.

Lee here from the Dream Shake

I clearly see how Battier could help you, but Kleiza isn’t on our radar and personaly he seemed to regress last year. I like the guy, but frankly I just thinkt he Rockets can get a lot more for Shane. That’s not to say it’s not a thought, just that it’s not a long one

Yes, that pretty much our biggest concern w/ L.K. as well ... has he regressed or was it just a bad season?

I guess we’ll be finding out here next season. As Runningdonut points out … signs point to Kleiza perhaps having to settle for the qualifying offer and try again as an unrestricted free agent next year.

Just interested ... if Houston does deal Battier or entertains it ...

Who would you like to see come in? What kind of package? Any specific names?

Yeah

If I’m the Houston GM and and Denver presents this deal, I ask for JR Smith in return. They really really need a scoring 2 guard

Blazers prep huge offer for Millsap

I dont have ESPN insider so i dont know the facts behind this, but Millsap is another Battier type player that every team needs, i think the Blazers get better with him more so then with Hedo.

by Mr.Clutch15 on Jul 9, 2009 11:28 AM MDT reply actions

I got the scoop for ya ...

From Jason Quick (beat writer for The Oregonian): has the story details here.

The Blazers figure to exhaust nearly all of their cap space to lock up Millsap. They are $7.7 million under the cap, but can gain an additional $1.65 million by renouncing the rights to Petteri Koponen and Joel Freeland. However, in the process, the Blazers would be assessed with a roughly $450,000 cap hold for having less than 11 players, thus giving them $8.9 million in cap space.

It’s rumored that if Millsap doesn’t work out then they’ll go after Brandon Bass.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
