Carmelo 2011

So this probably could be a quick FanShot so im sorry for the length, but scanning through the ESPN Insider Rumors for the NBA is saw the title that said the Knicks man not be ready for Lebron in 2010 and may be turning their attention to Carmelo in 2011.  Now a Knicks buddy of mine has been pumping that idea to me now for 3 some years seeing as Melo was born in New York and its the arguably the biggest market in all of sports.  So my question is A.) can anyone fill me in on the ESPN story, and do you think that if the Nuggets dont win a title or come very very very closein the closing years of his deal, would melo be lured away be the attractive NY market.

Personally i think the Nuggets will offer him a max extension within the next few years so this is not an issue.  But my favorite player of all time, on my favorite team, i have to bring it up now.

I think Carmelo will stay with the Nuggets as long as they want him. I think Melo would like to be recognized up there with Lebron and Wade (and should be) and I know he just switched agents for that reason so NY could be appealing to him BUT Melo is an extremely loyal guy, which is why he’s my favorite player (one of the many reasons).

Yes, NugNugz is right ... and a good article to pass along.

It’s sounding like Melo will talk extension with the Nuggets before he becomes a free agent.

Also, the New York thing is just a rumor being started by a columnist for now, but it’s basically a no-brainer that if they missed out on LeBron and Melo did become a free agent that New York should make a run at him.

Agreed....

Naturally the first thought was that he is going to sign an extension next year so he does not have to worry about the opt out the next summer. Thanks for the article post, im out here in Philly and i never think to check the Denver papers.

The two you can consult ...

The Denver Post will be your best source for quick hitting pieces and breaking news.

The Rocky Mountain Independent is a great source for longer reads on Nuggets related pieces. Chris Tomasson formerly of the Rocky Mountain News is running the show over there.

yaa

prob just sign an extension before b/c he is loyal to the franchise and has said he wants to retire here

Tis a rare thing but it still happens…Tim Duncan, Paul Pierce, heck even Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Maybe Melo will follow in those footsteps and I think as long as we continue surrounding him with good talent, he will.

I wouldn't guarantee Melo staying in Denver

Just because he says he would like to stay here. You hear that from every star player about their current teams (except for Lebron). And realistically, it’s every players dream to play for their home town team (except for Lebron). I hope he stays, and I truly think we have a great chance of keeping him since we have by far the better team, but you never know.

Does Melo even consider NY his hometown? He was born there but to my knowledge he’s always represented Baltimore. And the Wizards will be over the salary cap for a long time….

That would be a very sad day.

"C" is for Championship...that's good enough for meeeee!!!

by PosterNutbag on Jul 21, 2009 6:30 PM MDT reply actions

also...

I doubt that New York goes the entire 2010 offseason without making a major splash, which would then cut into their 2011 money for melo. So unless they want to anger Knick fans for another year, I doubt they would have enough money for him anyways. PS Melo loves it here.

Maybe two years ago I could see it

But with how much Melo has progressed in Denver and how much Denver has started to embrace Melo, and now that there is a legt window to a championship, especially if the Lakers lose both Ariza and Odom, I think he will want to stay here, and I think the Nuggets will want him here long term.

I’m moving to NY this fall so I’d LOVE to still be able to see him play in person, but I think it would be bad for the Denver franchise. Not enough players play their entire career in one uniform and Melo absolutely needs to do that.

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
