Maybe Iverson just isnt very good

Throughout this entire summer Allen Iverson has been looking for a place he can call home once again.  After leaving Philadelphia it seems that Allen Iverson can’t seem to find any team that wants him on the team?  Is there any reason why no team wants to pick him up, his heart and desire for the game have never been questioned and he is considered to be a lock in hall of famer.  So why is Allen Iverson currently not on any NBA roster, the answer is simple because Allen Iverson is one of the most overrated players of all time.  No team is a good fit for Allen Iverson and the simple reason is that he is all about Allen Iverson not about winning.

Allen Iverson plays his heart out every game and would want nothing more than to finish his career with an NBA championship.  However, he has only made it past the second round of the playoffs one time and won his division once in his career.  That one time he won his division was when the East was so bad that they might as well have just given the Lakers the championship after winning the West.  Not to mention that he had a great supporting casts that season, any “superstar” should have been able to do what he did that postseason.  What supposed future hall of famer doesn’t make their team better; after all he didn’t make the Nuggets or the Pistons any better these last couple of seasons.  Could you imagine if Dwayne Wade or any other future hall of famer had been traded to those teams they would be championship contenders by now.

Perhaps Iverson’s most overrated stat is his defensive stats.  Iverson was and always will be a terrible individual defender, who gets beat way too much.  Spare me all of his steals stats because those are some of the most overrated stats in the NBA.  Of course he gets a lot of steals, because he goes for the steal way to often which in turn leaves his team in vulnerable positions.  He has been and always will be a liability on the defensive end of the basketball court.

He was never a true point guard in this league because he has too much of a shoot first mentality.  When Iverson has the ball the offense comes to a complete stop there’s no more ball movement and no more open shots.  Iverson on offense is all about Iverson, give it to Iverson and what happens is dribble dribble dribble dribble shoot, oh it barely hit the rim.  When Allen Iverson has the ball all we see is him over and over again twisting and turning through a forest of arms and legs of bigger guys.  It’s almost like people become blinded by this and don’t see his crummy field goal percentage and blinded by the fact that no team is better with Allen Iverson.

No team will ever win with Allen Iverson because he is not the point guard that he wants so desperately to be.  Bring him on any team and you create a cancer, not only do you take away shots from younger players who probably shoot it at a better percentage, you also create turmoil in the locker room.  Even those who do not agree with me would agree that Iverson is no role model for younger players in this league, exhibit one would be how Melo has changed with the presence of Billups.  He's a liability on the defensive end and on the offensive end also yeah he can light it up for 25 or 30 every once in a while but most of the time he lights it up on the shot count not the points.

So those are the reasons why Allen Iverson is perhaps the most overrated player in NBA history.  Iverson supporters would say he took his team to the finals, that was the worst I have ever seen the Eastern conference and somebody had to win it just happened to be him.  His steals are greatly overrated because he goes for them too often and leaves his team in bad defensive position.  Iverson’s version of NBA offense is hand me the ball and watch me weave and out of traffic only to barely hit the rim.  Iverson will always be loved because he was glorified by shoe companies and commercials that were hungry for the next big thing.  Fact is Allen Iverson and Tracy Mcgrady are two of the most overrated players in history, not because they lack the talent to be great, but because they will be future hall of famers that left no lasting impression on this league.  In conclusion I believe Allen Iverson is homeless right now because he just isn’t that good.

I think you’re exaggerating this a bit. Although I would not consider myself an Iverson supporter, I would not say he is completely overrated. In his prime he was arguably the best player in the league. the problem with Iverson is not any of the things you mentioned, but rather the fact that he is a player who is past his prime who refuses to accept that he’s past his prime. That is why he hurts whatever team he is on. Instead of looking to be a part of the offense, he’s still looking to be the focal point of the offense and when that doesn’t happen, the chemistry issues evolve. Jordan had similar problems adapting in his last season and I believe it’s for the same reason. These are players who have been the focal point all their lives, given the green light to shoot and made a name for themselves doing it – it’s not easy so easy for some to reduce their role.

I agree with the guy before me about the fact he’s past his prime and doesn’t want to accept that. But you cant say he isn’t a good player he’s a player that is getting older and of course his performance is down. And how do you take a shot at McGrady and say he’s and overrated player? He is one of the most underrated players in the league. Both of these players have talent and they use it. You cant say neither of them isn’t good or overrated.

I don’t think TMac is overrated or underrated. He’s a good player that can’t win and can’t stay healthy enough to cement any type of legacy.

Not an Iverson fan...

and I completely agree with the first reply.

Allen Iverson is not overrated, nor is he not a talented basketball player. He is just simply unwilling to accept where he is at this point in his career. 9 years ago, he could carry a team on his back and win… the problem is, that was 9 years ago, and Iverson seems to have trouble understanding the concept of aging.

You say Allen Iverson would “want nothing more than to finish his career with an NBA championship.” I believe that is true, but he wants to do it in his own fashion, which is averaging 30+ PPG and receiving all of the praise from the media for his team’s success. He would not be willing to average 15-20 PPG sharing the major offensive load with another superstar if it meant winning a championship.

The bottom line is that Iverson’s mind still thinks it’s 9 years ago; he’s on top of the world, incredibly popular, and leading a team of mostly scrubs to the NBA Finals. Stick the current Iverson on that squad, and they’re not getting as far.

The sooner Iverson can wrap his mind around the reality of his career and who he currently is as a basketball player, the sooner he’ll be able to finish off his career happy.

1. THE NUGGETS AT HOME
How is it possible that a Nuggets team with this much talent can be 7-5 at home?! Things have gotten so bad that fans are clamoring for J.R. Smith to return.

2. CARMELO ANTHONY
Kobe Bryant plays through any and all ailments. Melo uses any and ailments as an excuse not to play.

3. KEVIN LOVE
Just when the T'Wolves are looking better, Love stomps on Luis Scola and lands himself a two-game suspension.

4. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
The 'Cats have lost 11 straight and are now 3-21 ... in the Eastern Conference! This is what happens when you let an underwear salesman with a Hitler mustache run your team.

5. MIKE BROWN
Dr. Bunsen Honeydew (Google it!) got himself a one-game suspension for making contact with a referee.
