Marc Stein with some Nuggets rumors
Keep in mind these are all rumors:
Nuggets looking at Grant Hill:
"Fresh off a trip to the Western Conference finals, Denver keeps coming up as a team hot for Hill, who earned less than $4 million over the past two seasons with the Suns."
Andersen could come to verbal agreement soon:
"The vibe I'm getting already is that the Nuggets should be able to secure a verbal commitment from Chris Andersen on a new contract -- their first shot-blocker off the bench and the most popular Nugget not named Chauncey or Carmelo -- in fairly fast fashion."
Kleiza to the Cavs?
"... there's a fair bit of belief in Ohio that it would be better to add more of a rangy 3/4 type to counter the likes of Lamar Odom and Rashard Lewis -- someone like Villanueva or the more affordable Linas Kleiza -- than Rasheed Wallace or Antonio McDyess."
Cleveland, though, can offer only a contract starting at full midlevel (at roughly $5.6 million)."
UPDATE: Channing Frye meeting
Thanks to gnarlybroncodude for sharing the link from CBS Sports:
"...the Nuggets were meeting with Portland unrestricted free agent Channing Frye as the clock struck midnight ET. Nobody does more with less than the Nuggets, who would benefit from Frye’s pick-and-pop ability without breaking the bank."

I also heard that Channing Frye was in Denver last night
The Nuggets also have long coveted Wallace, who nearly went to Denver before the team acquired Kenyon Martin in 2004. But according to a person familiar with the discussions, the Nuggets were meeting with Portland restricted free agent Channing Frye as the clock struck midnight ET. Nobody does more with less than the Nuggets, who would benefit from Frye’s pick-and-pop ability without breaking the bank.
They also might have interest in Sheed since they know Chauncey can control Sheeds outbreaks.

Channing Frye did not receive a Qualifying Offer...
so he is unrestricted.

Take it back.... sort of
Alright, I think we are getting Frye on a reasonable price and I’m coming around to accepting it. Bottom line is we really need a big who can shoot worth a damn. Channing is young and works hard, and he does have NBA experience. I didn’t follow this dude closely so I won’t rule out being able to warm up to him. We still need a big dude who rebounds and guards the post though

Channing was also stuck behind a bunch of people
in portland. He had 2 good years his first two years in the league and then he was traded to Portland. Portland then burried him on the bench and cut his minutes. Plus he is only like 24 so he has a lot of room to grow.

Lets just say he didnt earn any playing time...
In fact he got benched routinely when he was given a shot.

Blazers Edge has a nice goodbye post to Frye. Sounds like a great guy and a good teammate.
Really loved by the Portland fans.

What are the knocks on Frye?
I’ve heard he’s soft and doesn’t have a desire to really mix it up for rebounds. Accurate? Anything else?

Both true
Bad in the post at both ends of the floor. Not even quicker than the more bruising 4s. He can find a niche somewhere, buit needs to be alongside a Dwight Howard type center.

the reason that they buried him on the bench is because he’s a poor version of LaMarcus Aldridge. I’m not saying that’s bad or good, but he is soft.

I'll go ahead and add a couple rumors of my own...
supposedly Ben Gordon has agreed to sign with the Pistons once that date hits (july 8th i think) and similarly, Turkoglu could very well be on his way to Portland. What this means is that 2-3 players may have just become available in trades:
Rip Hamilton – solid 20 point scorer, great defender and best friends with Chauncey Billups.
Rudy Fernandez – Great young talent who can hit the 3 (space the floor) and get to the basket.
Travis Outlaw – clutch performer with great hops.
I’m not suggesting the Nuggets could get any of these 3, or if any of these 3 would fit with the nuggets. It’s hard to argue for taking a SG or SF when you have JR and Melo, but I thought I’d throw it out there. We pretty much only have Kleiza to give up though so that’s a bit of a problem, but I would not mind having rip on this team and JR serving as the back ups at the 1 (with Lawson), 2, and 3.

The Nuggets have a great asset in the $9.8 million trade exemption that expires Nov. 3rd, 2009
Basically Denver can take back any player and not match the salaries. Very nice tool to have for a team looking to dump an expensive player, like RIP for arguments sake.
To play devil’s advocate … if Denver did get RIP would you start him? He stated last season he basically hated coming off the bench.

Hamilton
Re-uniting Chaunce and Rip would be a nice story but we’d be so deep in luxury tax hell while still not fixing our size problem. Great player shoots and eliminates need for Dahntay but can’t help us get over the top.

I would agree with this.

Outlaw blows
Having Travis is the same things as having LK right now. A chucker off the bench who can get hot and score, “ready for a breakout year.” Both of them over-promise and under-deliver. Plus he;s rail-thin and not really a PF

Outlaw and L.K. ... very good comparison.

I'd like the Nuggets to use the trade exception...
but probably not on any of these three guys. I guess if we’re in win now mentality, I’d want Rip and continue to bring JR off the bench for that added punch.
I don’t have anyone in mind but I would like the nuggies to use that exception, only if it meant putting us over the top.

RIP is scheduled to make roughly $11.6 million next season.
The Nuggets could conceivably use the trade exemption of $9.8 and Steven Hunter’s $3.8 to get it done. But I don’t see RIP and J.R. having enough minutes at shooting guard to get it done.

you're right about the shooting guard thing...
but JR can also play some point and 3. So we let Carter and Kleiza go (maybe use Kleiza in a sign and trade for a big) and suddenly Smith can find about 13 minutes at SF, 16 at SG and 5 at PG and suddenly he’s got 34 minutes a game. Not ideal, but perhaps the Nuggets would be a better team and that’s what’s most important. However, rumor is Ben Gordon will sign the deal with Detroit knowing that he’ll be the 6th man. At the same time, I doubt Dumas is signing someone for 5 years at 55-60 million to come off the bench…
