The Denver Post is reporting that the Nuggets plan to submit a qualifying offer to Linas Kleiza, that will make him a Restricted Free Agent.

The Nuggets are not expected to submit a qualifying offer to Johan Petro, making him an Unrestricted Free Agent free to sign with any team.

I'm not surprised about Kleiza, but I am about Petro

If the Conference Finals showed us one thing, it was our lack of Depth in the front court. I thought that a training camp with Petro would get him in the rotation a bit more, but the Nuggets are letting him walk. Are we going to make another run at David Lee?

Petro ...

Don’t be so sure that Denver is going to let him walk away.

Petro’s qualifying offer was for roughly $2.8 million. That’s a lot of money to spend on a guy that plays less than 10 minutes a game or even at all.

Steven Hunter is coming back and may get some burn early with Denver so they can determine if they should trade him or not and he’s already under contract for $3.6+ million …

The Nuggets can still make an offer for Petro and perhaps if the market is limited Denver will be able to bring him back for less than the $2.8 he’d earn with the qualifying offer.

Making Petro unrestricted though will certainly bring more teams to the table b/c Denver doesn’t have the ability to match deals like they would have if Petro was qualified and made a restricted free agent.

But I guess we’ll know more come Wednesday …

And if you think about it ...

Does Petro command $2.8 million when the market could prove less?

7-footers with his athletic ability are pretty rare and he’s still very young (23), but I don’t think he should be making in the same ballpark to what Andersen will command ($3-$5 million per season)

You're right

He isn’t worth that amount. I hope Denver just resigns him when FA starts. I see a a lot of upside in him that George Karl just needs to work on to get him straight.

Petro

What’s alarming to me is how we got Johan. OKC traded him for a draft pick and actually took on Chucky Atkins crappy contract in return. It may have been just a money move getting Petro for insurance against injury. I highly doubt anyone would consider a multi-year deal for him or even a one year deal at that qualifying offer.

I don’t want Steven Hunter back on the team. Trading Reggie for him was a bad idea from the start and GK clearly never trusted him even when he was healthy. We need a tough garbage man like Reggie to take his spot, I’m not opposed to that being Petro coming back on a new deal.

Kleiza..

OK, someone set me straight. I heard about a year and half ago that the Nuggets had an offer that would send Ron Ron Artest to Denver for Kleiza and another player that was irrelevant, and the Nuggets turned it down because they didn’t want to deal Kleiza. Im a huge artest guy, and i think he could have really helped our team. i just can’t get by that. Every time i see Kleiza i think that should be artest. Please tell me that what i heard was false so i can enjoy watching Kleiza hit bombs.

You heard right ...

There were rumors of an Artest for Kleiza deal, but from what I recall … the Nuggets never got too far into the actual conversation for Artest. We’ll never know how close the deal was.

The one that went around this season was Kleiza for David Lee that Karl had a hand in nixing.

Kleiza and Petro

I honestly don’t think Kleiza is gonna get much better, he’s young, athletic and is decent at shooting. I hope thats enough for us to use as a trade bait, I really think the Nuggets need another post player and I hope the Nuggets can get with Kleiza. Talking about big guys, I do hope Petro is brought back. 7 footers that are athletic, thats not very common, and Petro is one of them, I was hoping they train him and make him a legit back up center (he’s kind of like our first round pick this year since we traded that away to get him, and a second round pick that we sold). Either way, I really hope the Nuggets front office doesn’t think this can make them win a title, I really think more moves have to be made.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 3/8 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: K-MART'S LEFT KNEE
Best-case scenario, K-Mart misses another week or two with a sore knee.  Worst-case, he's done for the season with knee surgery.

STIFF #2: RON ARTEST
Nice hairdo.  'Nuff said.

STIFF #3: JOEL PRYZBILLA
The Blazers backup center re-injured his surgically repaired right knee after slipping in the shower.  Now we're just waiting for Greg Oden to slip on a banana peel.

STIFF #4: CAVALIERS FANS
Recently set the world record for the largest gathering of people wearing fleece blankets - i.e. Snuggies.  Really?!  This is worthy of a world record?!

STIFF #5: BOSTON CELTICS
Losing to the pathetic Nets and almost losing to the Wizards is one thing.  But to do so at home within a week of each other...now that's an art.  I think it's safe to assume the Celtics are going nowhere in this year's playoffs.
