NBA Offseason Moves (constant update)
We've seen a flurry of deals already this summer and I expect a lot more to come with the Free Agency period now open. So, let's keep track of the offseason moves as they happen here.
June 2009:
- The Toronto Raptors trade Jason Kapono to the Philadelphia 76'ers for Reggie Evans.
- San Antonio Spurs trade Fabricio Oberto, Kurt Thomas, and Bruce Bowen to the Milwaukee Bucks for Richard Jefferson.

- The Cleveland Cavaliers trade Sasha Pavlovic, Ben Wallace, and the 46th pick in the 2009 draft to the Phoenix Suns for Shaquille O'Neal.
- The New Jersey Nets trade Vince Carter and Ryan Anderson to the Orlando Magic for Rafer Alston, Courtney Lee, and Tony Battie.
- The Sacramento Kings traded the rights of forward Jeff Pendergraph to the Portland Trail Blazers for Sergio Rodriguez, the rights to Jon Brockman and cash.
- The New York Knicks trade Quentin Richardson to the Memphis Grizzlies for Darko Milicic.
July 2009:
- The Los Angeles Clippers trade forward Zach Randolph to the Memphis Grizzlies for shooting guard Quentin Richardson.
- The Detroit Pistons agree to terms with shooting guard Ben Gordan and forward Charlie Villanueva.
- The Dallas Mavericks sign center Marcin Gortat to a contract sheet. The Orlando Magic will now have 7 days to match the offer since Gortat is a restricted free agent. Update: Orlando matches the Dallas deal and keeps Gortat.

The Memphis Grizzlies traded for a future 2nd Round Draft pick (from Toronto), guard Jerry Stackhouse, and cash considerations (from Dallas). The Toronto Raptors traded for forward Hedo Turkoglu (really a free agent signing from Orlando), forward Devean George, and shooting guard Antonie Wright (from Dallas). WHAT A MESS! Stackhouse is expected to be waived by the Grizzlies.
- The San Antonio Spurs signed free agent power forward Antonio McDyess to a 3-year $15 million contract.
- The Indiana Pacers signed former Denver Nugget shooting guard Dahntay Jones to a 4-year $11 million contract.

Spurs
I think the gushing over this Spurs deal is pretty ridiculous. I mean it’s nice, they got a scoring 3 – but Jefferson didn’t stick in Milwaukee or NJ because he showed wild swings of inconsistancy. Not to mention he struggles to play defense at 29 years old. This gives the Spurs a little more punch but when you consider the way they play I’m not convinced they are way better as a result. They still have major problems in the frontcourt, at the backup PG spot and a stupidly thin bench sans-Ginobili.

I’d have to say that for what the Spurs gave up they got more back. You are probably right that the deal may not actually make them better as far as challenging for the West, especially since Manu says he’ll be 100%, but let’s be honest … that’s not happening just because he says he’s going to be healthy.
But I do like that Jefferson is now just a role player and not a guy looked to for scoring power as he was in his last season in N.J. on a pretty crummy team. Playing with winner and in a good culture will do a lot for a career. Just ask Ron Harper.
The Spurs have been known to get guys to focus more as role players and I don’t think Jefferson will be any different. A solid trade, but certainly not one that swings the Spurs in a completely different direction.

My thinking was
This is good for the Spurs right now since they did get a huge upgrade at the 3 spot. But they gave up future flexibility and a few defensive role players to do so. I was a bit surprised they went for the $15 mil contract of RJ even though it’s only 2 years. Now, their frontcourt is even worse than before, and they are lacking perimeter defense. I still think they need to add another post player, a swingman to backup mason and parker, and a real Center as well. I think it would have been just as good and cheaper to go after David Lee, sign Villanueva or trade for someone like Maggette. Good move for the Spurs, but did they plug one hole while letting a few others open up? I’m not sold this is the best deal they possibly could have made
by runningdonut on Jun 24, 2009 4:52 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes they have some holes for sure ...
Over on Pounding The Rock (SB Nation Spurs site) they are talking about some Euro center that has been paling around with Tim Duncan … apparently that is their solution at center … can’t recall his name right now.
And I did read a bit about how this RJ trade kills their 2010 cap space. A very interesting move and it’ll be interesting to see how they address their big guys … Oberto is going to get bought out by the Pistons so he could be back, but he was out of favor anyway. Kurt Thomas was solid for them, but he’s about to start cashing his Social Security checks.
I love the offseason!

I'm having trouble of thinking of a comparrison for this team
I am interested to see how Jefferson responds to Pop’s style of coaching. I think this move makes the spurs better as a whole, since I bet they get a few solid rotation players (were talking 8th-10th guys) in free agency, NBADL, the draft, or some combination who can fill in where they have (Massive) holes.
I bet they get 4th-6th in the west next year.

Spurs
I wonder how much better that trade would make the spurs, because on paper it does seem like they have talent, but I wonder where that will put the Nuggets. I believe that the Nuggets should make some kind of splash over the offseason if they want to reach the nba finals. As of now I still don’t think they are a better team than the Lakers, I am hoping they draft well, trade Linas Kleiza, and Steven Hunter for another contributor.

From the Sports Guys on 104.3 FM
They were talking yesterday about being cautious of team chemistry.
They said back in 1994 after the Nuggets magical playoff run that Denver added Dale Ellis because they needed a three point shooter. Well, turns out Ellis often fought with Reggie Williams (their other shooting guard) and disrupted some very crucial team chemistry.
I agree that Denver needs to add some bench help, but they need to do so very carefully.

Magic (Finals appearance)
Lakers (3 Rings)
Heat (1 Ring)
Suns (playoff appearance / missed playoffs)
Cavs (TBD)

Nugs should trade for Ray Felton
As I keep saying.
Trade Dhantay Jones or Sonny Weems, cash considerations and the 34th pick to Charlotte for Felton, or something like that. I don’t know if that works out financially, but I’m too lazy to check.

Thoughts on the Spurs trade...
one thing we’ve overlooked is that with RJ getting most of the minutes at 3, I don’t really see anyone on the Spurs able to shut down a lot of 3s around the league or in the Western conference. I’m confident that if the Spurs were to play a playoff series against the Nuggets, Carmelo would be able to have his way.
by NugNugz on Jun 29, 2009 1:20 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
as for trading for Raymond Felton...
explain to me why the Bobcats would trade Felton, someone they went to bring back (supposedly), for Dahntay Jones. unless they’re in dump mode a la Milwaukee and PhX (which doesn’t look like it yet) then that’s not happening. They’d have a better chance at Barbosa who would be a great sixth man and prolific scorer off the bench now that JR will be starting.

Alot of talk...
These moves are having people talking. Chris Broussard says that the Spurs are now the second best team in the West (which i don’t agree with) and then if Golden State pulls this deal of for Amare, that would give them one hell of a line up. I just dont see the Nuggets going for a big FA, or Trade. They are already strong and I think they need to just stay the course.

So you don’t agree with these signings? The Pistons coughed up roughly $95 million for the two guys.
I don’t mind the Gordan deal, but he’s still going to come off the bench in favor of RIP (most likely) and Charlie V. has a lot of questions to answer about his desire to compete on both ends of the floor.

Pistons spot for 2010 ...
Check out this link of their team salary.
They only have 3 guys with commited salaries … RIP ($12.6), Prince ($11.1), and Jason Maxiell ($5 million) … and they will no doubt pick up the team option on Rodney Stucky for $2.7 million.
Consider they have Gordan now at $11 million and Villanueva at $8 million and that’s roughly $50.4 million guaranteed to 6 players.
As of now that’s about $20 million of cap space with a need for 8 more players … be interesting to see how they are reshaping the team.

Shit is crazy
The Western Conference arms race is in full effect.
Yes, the Lakers might have got better with Artest and Odom almost a lock to return. News flash the Lakers are dangerous. Shocking
Dallas is about to overpay for Gortat and Grandpa Kidd. Houston is a savvy slithery snake evidenced by stealing young talent like Ariza. They are being held hostage by Yao and T-mac’s injuries though. Portland seem to be flat out blowing it. I was nervous the Blazers would make a huge splash in the draft, they got nothing in terms of impact next year. Apparently they are going to blow their cap space on Hedo too.
I like our team, having confidence in the pieces we have will allow them to get better. Similar to last year we need to do a lot with a little. Lock up Birdman first. Ty, Sonny and Naldo need to get a chance to contribute. Some ninja moves to get a true center, a scoring PF, and a stronger wing defender could put us over the top and no one would see it coming.

you make it sound like such fun. which it is of course.
and yeah the other side the the artest signing is the ariza signing which is already being overlooked around the traps. the rockets picked up a hell of a player right there who is on the way up. ariza creates havoc on defense and hit big shots. the rockets will be just fine I think.

If the Nuggets want to stay in the championship hunt, they might have to go into luxury tax area. All the cool kids are doing it… :(
by NugNugz on Jul 3, 2009 3:17 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
its not a might
if they want to compete next year they will have to go into the luxury tax. I read somewhere today that they have like 3 TPE’s to use. The big TPE at 10 million. They could get David lee with that and it would save the Knicks money for 2010. They have to use that TPE to get an impact player. the nuggests have to get an impact big to stay competitive in the west
by gnarlybroncodude on Jul 3, 2009 3:59 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
now that the Lakers have Artest man….now the lakers can put artest on melo and kobe on JR and that hurts our offensive firepower.
I agree they gotta use those trade exceptions, but with the economy the way it is and a lot of teams looking to get under the luxury tax, is their a better player than David Lee that a team might part with? I don’t have anyone in mind but I beg you to keep in mind that 1) Lee was playing in the Eastern Conference last year and at that time, there was not a lot of talented bigs (unless you count Kendrick Perkins). How does Lee stack up going against Dirk, Gasol/Bynum, Al Jefferson, Stoudamire, etc on a nightly basis. and also keep in mind 2) David Lee was playing for Mike D’Antoni which to me automatically inflates a player’s stats. Heck even Quentin Richardson was good when he played for D’Antoni in PHX just to give you an idea. I’m not opposed to Lee, I just wonder if there are other options that we aren’t considering.

Way to hard to tell right now ... but there has been a lot of talk of the Spurs being the #2 team out west and the Lakers being #1.
With that said … that really leaves the #3 spot open to a handful of teams. The Nuggets are right in the conversation and it probably helps that Rasheed Wallace went to the Celtics and not the Spurs.
Still a lot of moves to be made with a lot of names still unattached to teams. Interesting to see which teams will land: Lamar Odom, Andre Miller, David Lee, and if Steve Nash’s name becomes available on the trade block.

Move Nene back to PF and have Bynum at Center. I would really be happy with that Frontcourt…
by CombatChuk on Jul 5, 2009 9:02 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
While it's possible, it's probably not probable.
K-Mart’s contract is probably in the Top 10 for most difficult contracts to trade. And as of right now … the Nuggets (salary cap wise) wouldn’t have to trade LK and KMart as Kenyon’s number for next season is $15.3 million (23rd highest paid player in the league right now) and Odom probably wont get a deal in that neighborhood.
Actually, the Nuggets would probably have to take back another contract to make that kind of deal work. Like Adam Morrison’s $5.2 million deal for next year. Then you’d have to take Odom at a new salary of about $10 million to $12 million per season (though I think L.A. will re-sign him and keep him for less than that.)

Dahntay Jones has reportedly signed a 4 year 11 million dollar deal with Indiana. I am glad that he’s getting paid (maybe overpaid a bit?). Looks like every team in the Western Conference is adding at least one or 2 quality players! WHAT ARE THE NUGGETS WAITING FOR!!!! The Nugs from the #2 in the West 2 months ago are now not even a top 5 in the West :(.

curious myself
I know there’s being happy with your team… but this is a little odd. Camby last season, now this silence?
At the very least, kudos on locking up Birdman. I know atleast a half dozen teams were drooling at the thought of adding him to their bench.

malik allen
did we trade sonny weems for malik allen?
by hvino on Jul 20, 2009 10:08 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Idk
That’s what I heard. I am bummed out if this is true. Weems has a lot of potential. Allen on the other hand, is a washed up waste of an NBA roster spot imo. Why trade away a young athletic player with potential for an old guy who has never made a big impact anywhere and isn’t even a legit Center? We already have Petro who is much better than this guy anyways. I hope this doesn’ go down.

As soon as I can find a credible source other than Nova Fantasy Sports I'll be posting.

I have to agree…I’d rather the Nuggets re-sign Petro or sign Cedric Simmons or a hundred other people before trading Weems for Allen.

i was think the same
its like if we had to chose between
a.) Petro and Weems
or
b.) M. Allen and C. Karl
i would choose A
but thts just me

ime udoka
what about udoka?
he would b good fit, eventhough barnes we could have gotten for 2 mil kinda pissed about tht
by hvino on Jul 21, 2009 10:28 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
I’m kinda pissed about that too. Barnes to me is a difference maker. some would disagree but there’s something about him that Udoka doesn’t possess that can change a game. Bruce Bowen is supposedly on the move…he’s a step or 2 slower but he’s got the experience, the grittiness and that corner 3. I hate him though but only because he’s never played for the Nuggets

Portland Signed Miller
Doesn’t put them over the top by any means, usually that is the case with a 34 year old PG, but it is a huge upgrade over Blake. I hate to admit it, but I have them winning the division next year. I know, it’s weak *ish and trust me, I want us to win sooooo bad, but they have a great coach and great team chemistry and a lot of depth as well. We have all those things too, I don’t know, I just dont’ trust Karl.

Whats up with the Weems trade?
I don’t understand how the Malik Allen trade has gone through. According to league rules no player can be traded to a team that is at or above the salary cap and then be traded again in COMBINATION with another player for two months, however the player can be traded on his own. This means that so long as Walter Sharpe is involved in a deal in COMBINATION with Sonny Weems he can not be dealt until the thirteenth of September

Linas Kleiza is very close to signing a deal with Olympiakos in Greece despite his desire to remain in the NBA.
“Olympiakos showed interest in me. I would like to stay in NBA, but if I have to go back to Europe, why not in Greece?” Kleiza told Sportando, confirming the contract offer.
