Thank You Nate Timmons!!!

I just wanted to take a few minutes to thank Nate and recognize the excellent job that he's done running this site since he's taken over.  Pickaxe and Roll has gone from a relatively obscure Nuggets blog to one of the best on the internet in a matter of months.  His predecesor Jeremy also did a wonderful job, and you can find him at roundballminingcompany.com.  However, after Jeremy left, Pickaxe and Roll layed dormant until Nate got the ball rolling again (or should I say 'bouncing again'?).

Since then the game summaries and previews are consistently excellent, incorporating great in-depth insight and information with humor and great writing.  After Nate started the game threads they grew to a level of participation and quality input that rivaled some of the bigger blogs for the NBA on SB Nation.  Pickaxe and Roll reminds me of when I first started going to Mile High Report when it was still relatively small and supported by the effort of a few dedicated and quality writers.  I hope that it continues to grow into next season and can become one of the truly great NBA sites on the intertubes.

Thanks again for all your hard work Nate!

Much respect, Nate...........

Coming on to the site as an “enemy”, I was blown away to find the site inhabited by intelligent, passionate Nugget fans who were fair and more than willing to accept an outsider in their midst. Even after the pain and frustration of tough losses wore off the community would always come back to it’s jovial, debateable self. It says a lot about the fans and even more about the man who runs the site.

From the writing to the moderating, great job Nate.

Different perspective ...

I became a believer in college that you need the thoughts and opinions of everyone to truly move a conversation. I’ve enjoyed having opposing fans contribute to the site and push Nuggets fans to look at the team in different light. I’ll always welcome opposing views as I believe the perception of an “outsider” can only help.

Pickaxe & Roll.com: 5,280 reasons to be a Nuggets fan

Thanks to all of you ...

I promoted this post to the front page for a little shameless publicity … haha.

It’s been a lot of fun getting to take over this site and it’s been even more fun watching the readership and conversation grow. I wanted to reward that by getting that t-shirt giveaway together and I’m glad that happened.

Without you all here reading and adding your opinions I’d just be a "talking head" so to speak. I’m a Denver Native and have been a Nuggets fan for as long as I can remember. It was cool to be a Bulls fan when I was growing up (as Michael Jordan was coming into his own with the Bulls in my time) and I admit I loved watching that team play.

But I’ll never forget attending the Nuggets vs. Bulls game in February of 1996 with my buddy Brett and rooting like crazy for the Nuggets and watching Rauf pour in 32 points in a 105-99 Nuggets win. Only 1 of 10 losses for the Bulls that season. Crazy times.

Every once in awhile my dad’s company would rent out a box at McNichols and with it two floor seats under the hoop. I recall being in the floor seats when Dennis Rodman (then of the Spurs) and his bleached blond hair came crashing down right at my feet. Watching Robert Pack cut through traffic and throw down impossible dunks … basketball quickly became my favorite sport.

I gave up playing organized ball just before high school started to focus on football (did me no good! haha) … probably one of the biggest regrets of my youth. But most of the better basketball players that I went to school with also quit the team (nobody liked the coaches) so we started playing almost everyday at the old Parker Rec Center.

It was pretty fun because kids came from all around (Aurora, Cherry Creek, Highlands Ranch, Denver, etc.) and there were some intense 5-on-5 games played on the hardwood. We’d beat kids and they’d tell us they were the varsity team from "such-and-such" high school and ask who we were … just 3 football players, a wrestler, and a golfer … helped our egos tremendously … not that we were any good anyway.

I was a sports writer and eventual sports editor at my high school and even wrote a little bit for my college paper. Majoring in journalism I hoped to get a job writing about sports … but we all know that is a small field. So, this blog has allowed me to re-ignite that sports writing dream.

I have some big plans in store for this site and I hope they all come to fruition. We are just getting started and like the Nuggets I’ll be back and hopefully better next season. But there will be no time off as I think the offseason is just as exciting as the regular season … see what moves all the teams make, debate about how good player X would be on team Y, and begin to be excited about the start of the new season.

Thanks again everybody and I hope you all continue to stick around and offer your thoughts as this community grows.

100% agreed.

Hell of a job resurrecting the blog and making it as great as it currently is. Can’t wait for all the offseason news, next season, and the future with this blog and the Denver Nuggets!

+1!

It's not the Lakers I hate with every bone in my body, it's just the players and their fans.

Only been here a week...

but I absolutely love it! Thanks for the hard work & dedication to the site; been looking for a good online Nuggets community for quite some time now.

This site

I love it! And there’s some really good insight as to what Nuggets fans are looking for and at possible moves we can make in the off season to get us into the Finals. I think there were a lot of people too that rooted for the Bulls when Jordan was winning all those trophys, I was one of them and he was the icon of the sports world, kinda hard not to love him.

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
