Trade for Kenyon Martin for Manu Ginobili?

ESPN has reported that Manu Ginobili is maybe on the block this offseason.  Denver is in a world of hurt concerning the Salary Cap this year.  We still have a huge trade exception with the Detroit trade that brought us our savior CB7.  Ginobli's salary is around 9 million compared to K-Mart's salary of 14.5 mil, this trade with our exception would be a huge relief to the Salary Cap.  Making resigning Birdman and Linas Kleiza (Yes, I do belive we should resign LK) much easier to accomplish.

George Karl indicated that J.R Smith would start at the 2 next season, Sonny Weems is good but could probably use a bit more experience.  Having Ginobili as the 6th man would bring focus and scoring off the bench, he can hit the 3s and is not afraid of driving to the rim.  He's also a good perimeter defender.

Who would we replace K-Mart with?  Steven Hunter.  One thing that was obvious in playing the Lakers in the Finals was our lack of size.  K-mart was too small against Pau Gasol, and the Lakers killed us when Gasol and Bynum were on the floor together.  Steven Hunter is 7 foot tall and has good size against the Pau and the Dirks in the league.  Offensively Steven would be an upgrade over K-Mart, I saw a highlight reel of Steven Hunter and I forgot how hard he was able to drive to the basket for some easy points.

San Antonio is looking for a PF, Matt Bonner was not the answer for them this year and the Spurs have been looking at other options at PF.

So with this happening (In my dream world) here's what I envision the 2009-2010 lineup would look like

(Starter - Backup)

PG Chauncey Billups -(FA Point Guard I would love Shannon Brown) - Anthony Carter
SG J.R Smith - Manu Ginobili - Sonny Weems
SF Carmelo Anthony - Linas Kleiza - Renaldo Balkman
PF Steven Hunter - Chris Anderson
C Nene - John Petro

I thought of that too but

Nene is now getting used to playing center… Steven Hunter has been a PF for most of his career (If not always). He’s quick enough and would cause very favorable mismatches. With enough time and practice he could keep up defensively with the Gasols, Dirks, and even (might be a strech) Lebron James.

Uhhhhh

You do realize that manu ginobli is like 10,000 times better than J.R. Smith , Right?

Why is he coming off the bench for a chucker ?

Because J.R is going to be the Shooting Guard of the Future for the Nuggs

Ginobili works really well as the 6th man coming off the bench, and would give the bench an offensive and defense intensity boost.

by CombatChuk on Jun 11, 2009 1:05 PM MDT up reply actions

But J.R. plays so well off the bench , why ruin a good thing?

I agree with the injury thing , but ginobli has a ring . He is a far better player and i don’t think he is exactly over the hill.

J.R. doesn’t look like a starter to me, he reminds me of jason terrys role this year, or travis outlaw or whatever. Great offensive punch of the bench .

I think ginobli would be a perfedt starter because he would be another play maker, and he wouldn’t have to be THE MAN like he was on the spurs.

I think you should start him and have him play around 25-30 minutes.

But thats just my opinion.

JR does need some work

But in the Lakers finals, he showed up with a some defensive intensity that I liked. He needs to work on shot selection. That’s the big one

by CombatChuk on Jun 11, 2009 1:57 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree.

He can shoot the lights out , but idk if he knows where the three point line is. Cuz he likes to stand 8 feet behind it lol.

I can actually make sense of it

I could see Kenyon being the valuable post defender the Spurs would like. Between Matt Bonner, Kurt Thomas, and Drew Gooden they haven’t been able to find an answer.

San Antonio would have to have some major concerns about Manu’s health to do this. He hasn’t been signed to an extension which leaves whatever small chance the Spurs want to trade him a possibility. Any option for trading Kenyon needs to be explored and this is the best one I’ve heard. K-Mart’s contract is almost a deal-killer in and of itself but if this deal becomes possible in any circumstance the Nugs have to say yes.

I just don't see the Spurs dealing Manu, but I could be wrong.

I think if Denver were presented or pursued a deal with Kenyon that they’d have to seriously consider it.

I would be happy with a role player and draft picks for him

In all fairness to Kenyon, I kind of feel like he should be playing for the Clippers.

Marcus was a victim of having a fair, reasonable contract for his contributions, which is why other teams wanted him.

If the Nuggets could land Manu with Kenyon Martin...

It would be the greatest trade of the century. A healthy Ginobli is a top 15 player in the NBA. K-Mart doesn’t crack the top 30.

RC Buford Would be hung in the town square if he did that deal.

Now if Denver was to include a couple players like say JR Smith and Linas Kleiza then it wouldn’t be such a bad deal.

but what about PF?

we have enough guards to be competitive. Granted, we could definitely use Manu, but K-Mart played excellent D and we was a huge asset to us in the playoffs. He only avgd. 12 pts 6 reb this year but he means a lot more to us than those stats indicate

Wow, that is interesting

I would love to get K-marts salary off the books, but I hate that Euro flooper in Manu. I am not suure how I would feel, if we could do the trade and sign Brandon Bass, then hell yeah I would do it.

Again, it was just a rumor

It is curious that the spurs haven’t resigned Ginobili though… This is just wishful thinking…

by CombatChuk on Jun 17, 2009 9:36 PM MDT up reply actions

Excuse my ignorance, but would that mean that SA would have to take on KMart’s ridiculous salary? I don’t think anyone in the league is dumb enough to do that.

"C" is for Championship...that's good enough for meeeee!!!

I dun want to be harsh. I understand this post is just fantasy. But still, Manu for K-mart? Lol. A basketball whirling dervish genius for….well I am not sure what K-Mart is anymore.

The salary is not the issue in my mind. There has gotta be some kind of cosmic balance in talent :P

If these are the kind of trades being proposed then why stop there...

We’ll also throw in Jacque Vaughn, Eva Longoria, a plate of fajitas, and our coyote mascot for The Rocky Mountains, a couple cases of beer, Michael Bolton’s greatest hits and season one of Mad Men on DVD….

Where do we sign?

But how about Finley for Balkman, straight up?

Wow you San Antonio fans are way too classy...

This post was just for something to kill time until next season. I see you all have a post on Pounding the Rock just for bashing this fanpost. I guess seeing the glory years fade away (due to age) must be getting to you guys…

Now now, settle down. This is just friendly banter. From our perspective, this would be like us offering you Finley for Melo. Sincere apologies if we hurt your feelings.

Come on Chuk. You gotta be able to see the humor in your own fanpost. If you provide fodder, why shouldn’t we have a laugh about it. Like you said, nothing much else to do other than wait for draft.

And this post IS funny. Dun get riled up just coz we are having some fun with it.

by LionZion on Jun 18, 2009 3:04 PM MDT up reply actions

First of all, please understand that just because we find something funny, doesn’t mean we’re bashing it. We have a weird sense of humor. And we can certainly understand the thought process behind this post – yes, we’re blatant homers, just like any other team’s loyal fans. It’s OK, dude… most of us have respect for the Nuggets, since they made us hope(if only for a few days) that the Lakers would be brought down this year. You should also know that Manu is the obsession of PtR, so any talk of trading him is immediately picked up on and trampled, even in our own comments – some of our members wouldn’t even trade him for Wade/Lebron/Kobe. So I’m sorry if our attention riles you, but it wasn’t meant to be disrespectful, so I apologize for the lot of us if that’s how it came across.

FYI: I was [half] serious about Finley/Balkman – the salaries are close enough that it could work. We get athleticism, you get a shooter. :P

A serious note from a Spurs fan...

The Spurs wouldn’t trade Manu for anyone on your team but Melo, and even then it’d be your team who’d have to sell them on the move.

Manu

Seriously if your a real Nuggets fan you would never speak of this guy being on our team again. REAL NUGGETS FANS HATE MANU GINOBILI! He should be a soccer player cuz all he does is flop!

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
