Are the Mavs playing politics?

After Denver’s win Sunday afternoon at the Pepsi Center, several members of the Mavs management team, particularly Rick Carlisle, publicly complained about the officiating, the Nuggets physical style of play, and the 29-19 foul discrepancy.  However, after George Karl offered to send in the game tapes for review, Carlisle quickly changed his tune and suggested that the refs were not to blame for the loss.  Or as the Denver Post explained, “One day after Carlisle griped about the officiating, he backpedaled a lot better than his team did in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 109-95 loss.”

So what gives?  Was the officiating unfair or not?

I think a quote from Dirk after the game is very telling.  Dirk was quoted as saying,

"I don't think we can play as physical as them…We don't have the personality for it. If you look at some of our games this year, especially when Josh (Howard) was hurt, to win the games a lot of times we had J.J. (Jose Juan Barea), Jason Kidd and Jet (Jason Terry) out there, basically three point guards…We have to play as hard as the game gets called."

So are the Mavs simply trying to lobby the refs to get the game called in a manner that would be more favorable to their style of play?  Are they accusing the Nugs of playing dirty simply because they can’t “play as physical as them”?

Cuban has appealed to the league in the past and I think he has worn out his influence.  Cuban has called ‘wolf’ one too many times.  As a result, he has to rely on his cronies to make public appeals for him.  But is the strategy effective?  Was Kmart’s foul on Dirk upgraded to a flagrant and fined partly because of Carlisle’s complaints?  Will we see a much more active officiating crew on Tuesday night?  Let’s hope not.

My take is that the Mavs are complaining that the Nuggets play a ‘bullying’ style of Basketball in an attempt to bully the league into officiating the game in a manner that will allow them to be more competitive.

I think it is imperative that the NBA shows that they can’t be intimidated by GMs and Coaches into changing how they officiate a series.

Go Nuggets!

You gotta take it to the rack if you want calls ... not shoot jumpers.

The funny thing about the officiating crews is they change from game-to-game so we may get a crew tonight who allows physical play or we may get a crew that will call the touch fouls.

Anyone’s guess is as good as mine as to what it’ll be tonight …

well

So what your saying is that if you do a jump shot and someone hits your elbow its ok ? The NBA is not always about dunks and layups is it? I mean I love the skill level and seeing people make jump shots that most of us can’t make over 50% of the time.
Poster man, all players whine its the NBA. Anthony whines, Dirk whines, Duncan whines, Kobe whines, Wade whines, please tell me a player who never whines. Damn man Dirk is not the only player who thinks he is fouled on every shot, they all do lmao.

That's not what I'm saying at all ...

Just saying there is probably a higher percentage that you’ll get fouled if you take the ball to the rim … come on man, you know this.

A foul is a foul, but you are more likely to draw one at the rim than off a jumper … wouldn’t you agree? Or are you just playing devil’s advocate?

Agreed on the whining …

Well...

Last night’s Lakers game was far more physical than the Nuggies game and it was officiated just fine…. Heck there was blood spilled by both teams… With the ratings up as they are for all these games, I don’t see any change in the officiating.

It wasn’t the officiating that beat the Mavs, it was the Mavs emotions that helped the Nuggies beat the Mavs. When I saw Nowitzki throwing his temper tantrum at the end of the first half, I knew it wouldn’t be long until he was so rattled that he wouldn’t be able to perform… Sure enough… What, half way through the third quarter he was clearly off his game.

Lesson: Physical play frustrates tall blond Germans.

How in the hell

does Nowitzki not get T-d up for getting in the face of the official and yelling at him? K-Mart looks at an official funny and gets a T. I didn’t know Nowitzki was such a whiner. Must be the Eurosoft in him.

I think

that’s the infamous NBA Reputation call right there. Tim Duncan is an obnoxious, blatant, whiner but because he’s freaking Tim Duncan, he’s fine. Kenyon Martin is part of a street team that happens to play in the NBA.

Duncan didn't listen to his mother

when she told him not to make faces because his face would stick like that. Now he has permanent whiny face. Nothing like my hatred of the Wings, but I really dislike the Spurs and the Lakers. Biggest floppers in the league? Ginobli (the king, he deserves to be injured the flopping PoS), Vujacic, and Gasol. Luckily Vujacic is also a pretty lame player, so having his floppy arse on the floor doesn’t help the Lakers much.

short rant

First off, of course, great game again by the Nugs last night. Especially that amazing run in the 4th (duh). OK. Now, could someone please, esplain to me Lucy, how K-Mart gets a T for wiggling out of a bear hug and walking away from a hard foul? And, as for me defending Dirk as a non-flopper? I apologize profusely. He took flopping to a new level last night. Flailing, falling, groaning, whining, every time a Nugget was near. Luckily, there were times when the refs didn’t buy his act. Making him look even more like a fool. The dude has mad skill, I just didn’t realize he was another EuroFloppingPoS.

Curious

Is it ok to not agree with your blogs and post or is it only ok to post if you agree with everyones opinion here ……Just trying to make sure cause I dont want arguements started or for things to get out of hand like the other day. Just let me know if I am not allowed to post and if so I won’t .

So long as your thoughts are respectful and not personal attacks ... argue away my friend.

Nothing stirs a good pot like a great argument. Only way to see things from other perspectives and maybe educate yourself.

Others’ opinions are always welcome here.

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
