The Laker Scourge: Car Flags

More than anything, this is a plea from me to the Nuggies to win tonight so we can stop obnoxious behavior.  All over LA these stupid car flags are popping up and the more success they have the more flags I'll see.  I had my camera with me so I can take pictures at the game tonight to send to Nate to post here and so I caught this fellow who was just down the street from my house.

Yes, Nuggets fans, you probably have an obnoxious Laker fan in your neighborhood.

I counted no less than seven cars with these annoying flags today.... The Nuggets have to win or this could get out of hand. Every year the Lakers go deep in  the playoffs these silly things come out and increase in numbers until they fall on their ass at which time they all simultaenously vanish.

Why do I hate these flags?  Because they tipify what drives me crazy about Lakers fans in general.  They are the kings of bandwagon jumping.  When they're good, they're all diehard fans.  When they're bad nobody notices because everybody's doing other crap. If you are a true Laker fan, fly your silly little flag during the regular  season or, heck, before the WCF.  There weren't as many flags last week as there are today.  Why?  Because the Houston series didn't make the Laker bandwagon look so attractive and Laker fans weren't about to jump on unless they could be right in doing so. Diehards indeed.

Seriously, I live here.  I can't have these people running amok.  So, Nuggies, please crush the hopes and dreams of these people, will you?

J

P. S. Anthony Carter you're on my list too.

I'm with you

I’ve been to Blazers-Lakers games in Portland where when Portland pulls away for the win (which we have now done 8 times in a row and 13 of 14 at home) the idiots with the Kobe jerseys take them off. If you’re proud of your team, show it…

Proud member of Duck nation!

Dude

I am so tired of those damn flags. I want Denver to win so we can see the 5 and 405 littered with those lame things, whats even worse is now charger fan is starting to do that. Talk about a bunch of followers here in San Diego

Am I not wrong?

The second the Lakers are in trouble they disappear. It’s like an unspoken collective erasure of their fandom….

Actually since you don't follow the Lakers I will enlighten you.

As far as people taking them off after a loss, I don’t know, I haven’t seen it. However as for the “waiting until the playoffs” part Mitch Kupchak “GM” asked fans to not use them until the playoffs and the fans agreed. Not sure why exactly, maybe the same reason we don’t hang division banners, but that is why you don’t see them.

“Yes, Nuggets fans, you probably have an obnoxious Laker fan in your neighborhood.”

Probably true, but no one ever sees a Nugget fan in their neighborhood, period. Where are you guys?

I know one of them claims to be somewhere close to where I live in LA. It’s funny, I don’t know of ANYONE repping the Nugs where I live. Maybe he’s not “bandwagoning” strongly enough for me to see him?

I’m sure they do. It’s the loser who comes over to watch the 2nd round playoff games and has no rooting interest becaue his team isn’t in them.

Again.

Just like last year.

Let's see...........

I always find it interesting when fans of other teams accuse Laker fans of “obnoxious behavior” and “bandwagon jumping”. Laker fans are obnoxious when they rep their team why again? Because they’re consistently in the NBA title debate every year? So every year come playoff time the flags come out and chests get puffed out a little more and it hurts your feelings why again?

Could it be because since 1980 the Lakers have won:

8 world championships

15 conference titles

16 division titles

Might that have anything to do with it?

Perhaps the reason it SEEMS like we’re bandwagon jumpers is because when the season starts, the need for desperate optimisim and blind faith aren’t there like they are for other teams. We don’t have the “Maybe this year is our year!” mentality that other teams fans carry with them to the start the year. For Laker fans, getting to the playoffs and contending for a title is a given year to year. So we tend to wait until the playoffs start before we get that “excitement” you see as “bandwagon jumping”. It’s easy to understand how that’s mistaken in the eyes of fans of other teams who are settling in for another offseason of dashed hopes or are fighting their hardest to get the 7 or 8 seed and get thumped by us in the first round year after year.

I (along with most Laker fans) don’t even get upset anymore with the angry, frustrated ramblings of angry fans of other teams. It’s flattering actually. That we inspire such feelings of hate and disdain. i’d venture to say we rarely even think about most teams as the seasons go on.

Famous quote time, peeps. You might want to commit it to memory, you’ll have all off-season to debate it’s meaning.

“Success makes so many people hate you. I wish it wasn’t that way. It would be wonderful to enjoy success without seeing envy in the eyes of those around you.”

Thank you Marilyn Monroe...

Were you flattered when the entire world rejoiced when Boston squashed you like a bug last season?

Again, it is flattering when fans of a team that was swept out of the first round last year by the Lakers and has a history of being so embarrassingly bad that in 2005-2006 when they won a DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP teams were tanking at the end of the season so they could actually paly them in the playoffs because they knew they were known chokers and they’d be the easy series in the playoffs hate us.

You remember that, right?

Truth be told

My dislike of the current Lakers isn’t flattery. It is a genuine dislike. During the 80’s, I was actually a Laker fan. Although I was still a Nugget fan first, I loved Magic and showtime and despised the Celtics. But this Laker team is different. Kobe isn’t Magic. And Phil’s triangle/one man show type of offense isn’t nearly as fun to watch as showtime. Am I also envious of the success of the Lakers versus the relative failure of the Nugs over the years? Sure. But I can easily separate my dislike of this Laker team from pure envy. Especially since I found myself cheering for past Laker teams.

i dont envy LA per se

Sure they have the rings and more power to them, I hate Kobe and some of the arrogant pricks on that team. I like Shaq when he was there. Now I rooted for Boston over LA so the balance of the universe would be restored. Showtime Lakers were ok, I didnt have any disdain for them. Its just I have a dislike for Kobe, especially after he was busted cheating on his wife he tried to throw Shaq under the bus. Dude thats a major lack of class.

Well obviously he was a great player and helped the team by being here.......

But between the two if one had to go (and one did) I was glad it was him. In retrospect, all Laker fans are glad. They couldn’t afford both of them and they couldn’t co-exist anyway. And before you ask, yeah most Laker fans blame Shaq for their problems. I won’t go into a million details, but as a fan, Shaq’s side of the fight was always petty and pathetic. Yeah Kobe threw him under the bus (obviously Kobe didn’t know it would go public) but everyone knows he didn’t make it up. Shaq is just as much of a whore as Kobe, Kobe just got caught.

I just like the underdog.

I don’t mind Kobe (as a person, as far as I can tell).
Pau disgusts me with his neckbeard.
Sasha is a flopper and should probably play in WNBA — though I am a fan of The Machine videos that get posted every once in awhile on BDL.

I kinda like to root for the team that hasn’t had success in the playoffs taking on the #1 seed.

Chauncey is my Uncle Ben and Kobe is Melo’s father. I think we all know how this one ends. Oh wait, I doubt Kobe will throw Phil Jackson down a hole and defect to the Nuggets. Nevermind.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 11/4 by Nate)

STIFF #1: DAN HAWKINS
After predicting 10 wins for his club before the season the Buffs find themselves just 2-6 with four games to play. To add injury to insult ... former 5-star prized recruit Darrell Scott announced he'll be transferring to UCLA after just 1 1/2 seasons at CU. Another black eye for the program and hopefully the final nail in Hawk's coaching coffin.

STIFF #2: CHRIS PAUL/RAJON RONDO FEUD
Each player was assessed a technical foul after refs had to separate the two in Boston's 97-87 win Nov. 1st. After the game the arguing and posturing continued. As Celtics' coach Doc Rivers pointed out, the 180 lb. fight rule should be invoked allowing the two to scrap because, "It's impossible for them to hurt each other." Maybe Paul should focus more on his teams' 1-3 start and not on the opposing teams' point guard's ability to, "respect me as a man."

STIFF #3: ESPN NBA HEADLINES
The Nuggets headline today reads, "Nuggets sink Pacers to avoid taking first loss." Compare that to the Suns' line reading, "Suns remain unbeaten, hand Heat first loss." Thanks for the backhanded compliment Worldwide Leader. At least Yahoo! Sports got it right, "Nuggets off to best start in 24 years." Maybe I'm being too picky.

STIFF #4: STEVE NASH'S MINUTES
When has it EVER been considered a good idea to play a 35 year-old (36 yrs on February 7th) point guard 36.8 minutes per game? Nash is on pace to average a career-high in the minutes department. And while Nash has averaged 77 games played in five full seasons with the Suns, his chronic back issues could rear its ugly head out early at this rate.

STIFF #5: PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS
Sure starting the season off 2-3 is no big deal, but when head coach Nate McMillan begins openly questioning the teams' effort to the media ... look out.
