Cuban apologizes

More photos » by Doug Pensinger - Getty Images

Things had to get "out of hand" in order for Mark Cuban to admit he was wrong.

Game 3 was played Saturday May 10th and Cuban's official apology to Kenyon Martin and his family came at 1:34 a.m. on May 12th.

I was always taught to apologize face-to-face so that I could own up to my mistakes. For me, Cuban's apology only comes because he helped put Kenyon's family in jeopardy in his own arena and his guilty conscious got the best of him.

Things got out of hand for all parties involved, but let's not let a few bad apples ruin the bunch.

TNT informed us that Cuban will not be attending Game 5 in Denver ... thank goodness! Hopefully this will allow for the focus to remain on basketball.

Here is what Cuban had to say on his Blog Maverick site:

It started as a smart ass comment that I know that no one heard. How do I know, because there was a reporter right there next to me, as well as other people who saw the whole thing and didnt hear a word of it.

But at this point, that has become irrelevant. It doesnt matter why I said it. I shouldn’t have said anything. Now, the reality is that this has gotten out of hand.

When tempers and such start impacting the fan experience both in Dallas and Denver, and it requires special security, thats not what I want for Mavs or Nuggets fans. No one takes more abuse and gets more threats on the road than I do. So I know exactly how it feels. I’ve also had my family and friends spit on at games in this series. So I know how unpleasant that is as well. It’s a dirty secret that all arenas need to do a better job of protection for visiting team fans, particularly during the playoffs.

So at this point I would like to apologize to you and your mom KMart for my comment. I should have not said anything and I was wrong. Hopefully you will accept the apology and we can move on.

When the series comes back to Dallas, your family, and the family of other Nuggets players are welcome to stay in my suite, with my family. Its amazing how tempers mellow when real people talk to each other and realize that its still just a game.

If that isn’t acceptable, I’m happy to provide a suite, free of charge to them as well and place whatever security is needed to make them feel comfortable.

We tried to have enough additional security for them tonight as well, but I know your family and friends didn’t feel as comfortable as they should. I apologize for that as well. This arena is my responsibility, we could and should do a better job.

So if we can put this behind us, I will make sure when the series comes back to Dallas, your family and friends, and that of your teammates are very comfortable at our Arena.

Then I hope we both take the advice of your coach and can get together this summer. Dinner for you and your family is on me.

There is mention of a double standard in the comments section as it points out that Cuban and his family have had a difficult time at games in Denver. I find it just as despicable to hear these accounts happening at the Pepsi Center as Cuban has only now made them known and hope the guilty parties are also removed from the games.

There is just no room for this type of behavior at a sporting event.

What a backhanded apology.

“When the series comes back to Dallas.”

Fuck you, Cuban. We’ll come back to Dallas next SEASON.

I noticed that also.

He is ridiculous, he apologies and then he says that only for getting the Nuggets fans mad.

What the hell

kind of apology comes before the fact?

by jbuskmiller on May 12, 2009 10:23 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

After the fact that he did so ... ONLY AFTER AN INCIDENT OCCURED IN DALLAS!

He had ample time to apologize so that Dallas fans didn’t follow his lead and trash a fellow Dallas family.

I can’t imagine if Billups was still in Detroit that Denver fans would treat THEIR OWN in this manner. Just disgusting.

WHAAAAAAAAAAA…Mommy…he didn’t apologize to me fast enough or in person….WHAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

You didn’t hear Cuban griping about he or his family getting spit on IN DENVER! I thought you guys were tough.

Timing

It wasn’t there, and his lame apology doesn’t change the fact that he’s the real thug. What other owner would confront an opposing player’s Mom and shout obscenties?

Please read at Nate's statement above

He waited until after last night’s game, because he wanted the Mav fans ready to explode. If he was sincere, he would’ve done it the very next day.

He had ample time to apologize so that Dallas fans didn’t follow his lead and trash a fellow Dallas family.

Honestly, the only reason Cuban offered an apology was because of the negative response in the media. The word ‘thug’ can have pretty derogatory implications. As one ESPN commentator said, “the word ‘thug’ has become one of the ugliest euphemisms used in professional sports”. I have a hard time believing the apology was particularly heartfelt when it’s offered in the 4th paragraph of a blog. That would indicate to me that the apology was more to save face publicly than to actually apologize to KMart and his family. If you want to apologize to someone then I think it’s common sense that you’d apologize TO them, i.e. not via the intertubes.

He is a tool

Why couldnt he be man enough to apologize to K-marts mom and him face to face? Having a backhanded apology on a blog is a cowardly way to do it. Plus didnt anyone notice how he turned it around to make it about him. His act is tired, he has been good for the game and Dallas, but when his act overshadows the game itself (as usual when this ass is involved) its time to be a quiet owner. I am so tired of him and his act against Denver this year. If its not him yelling at JR its him whining about a non call or getting personal with Kenyon and his mom. He really needs to grow up. Owners should be seen and not heard

Way to play the coward card Cuban

You can’t even be a man and go apologize to Kenyon and his mother directly, you hide and then send out some lame ass apology on the internet. Nice you can’t even come to Denver to face the Nuggets fans, way to hide behind all your clowns in Dallas. Payback is a bitch and we will be bitchslapping your Mavs come Game 5.

As a Dallas Fan.......

I have Loved what Cuban has brought to our Organization that was a laughing stock in the 90’s. That being said I didn’t and still do not like the way he acted after game 3. There was no reason to bring a family member into the mix in anyway. I think its a big embarrassment to the Mavs team. Families point blank are off limits. I don’t blame Kenyon for not accepting the appology.
That being said, after reading all this I see a double standard here as you posted wrong facts about the stand incidents. LALA was excorted not for her safety as you posted but for her throwing red soda on fans behind her. None of the camera’s showed beer being thrown during the whole instance and if so please show the video as proof. The whole incident did show lala throwing red soda on fans behind her and she even admitted to it. Are you gonna bash her now for being in the worng or make an excuse on her part cause she is in the Nugs family? Kenyon flipping off fans on his way out of a tunnel today and throwing f bombs at fans who had nothing to do with anything , are you gonna treat him the same as Cuban for being unprofessional? Your wrong for trying to portray Dallas fans as these disgusting fans when there is always a few bad apples in EVERY stands. Denver fans have thrown things on to the court and at players and there have been incidents in those stands of other things also , so are you calling them bad fans also or just the few that ruin it for all? I mean if you harp on one thing then you need to look at yourself or your fan base first before judging others. Is there anyone here who thinks Denver fans are perfect or have never done anything ever in a game to the opposing team please let me know cause I have never seen a perfect stadium in my life.

by daniel1234 on May 12, 2009 6:22 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

You make some very good points, and trust me, Kenyon has had some very questionable

moments here in Denver. My bigger beef is that this really has nothing to do with Kenyon, hi mom, or the Nuggets, this has more to do with an owner basically telling his fans through his actions, guess what, harass and be a total ass to anyone not a Mavs fan and especially if they are assoicated with the Mavs. This isn’t the first time he has thrown a tantrum, and it won’t be the last time. He basically added gas to a fire. If he had been a man and was really sorry then he would of stepped up to the plate before the game, went and apologized directly to Kenyon’s mom and Kenyon and made a public statement to difuse the situation. But I think he saw this as an oppurtunity to distract from the actual game and get it to be K-mart vs Cuban, or K-mart vs JR Smith, not the Mavs vs. the Nuggets, and now that he has been getting so much heat he figures he will apologize, too little to late.

And what if Cuban had gone up to K-Mart to apologize before the game

only to be involved in an altercation with K-Mart that got him suspended? It’s not that far-fetched a thought, as Martin was clearly upset before/during/after the game with Cuban/everyone not wearing Denver powder blue. I think going up to him in person during this series is a bad idea for everyone involved.

well broncoman

we both agree Cuban screwed this whole ordeal up and it could’ve be done with alot more maturity. The problem I have is they are all in the spotlight of fans and kids for that matter. Can’t they just act like adults? All of them . Owners, coaches, and players? Is that really to much to ask , knowing they are always on camera? lol

by daniel1234 on May 13, 2009 5:59 AM MDT up reply actions   1 recs

It could of been behind closed doors with security personnel there if Cuban was scared

As I always say, your mouth shouldn’t write checks your ass can’t cash. I understand Cuban may be afraid of Martin, but I think if Cuban had called the Nuggets and said look, I was out of line, I would like to meet with K-mart behind closed doors, no camaras and make an honest face to face apology to him and his mother, then make a public apology before the game, I doubt that he would of gotten crap that he is getting or gotten decked by K-mart, cause then K-Mart would have nothing to have a beef about and if he did deck Cuban after the apology, then it would prove that Cuban was right and everyone would be mad at K-mart and he likely would be suspended for the series.

After hearing more and more ...

the whole incident just sounds ugly.

I was just throwing up what was out there from the media … but we all know the media never gets the whole story and I don’t think we’ll all get the whole story as to how everything went down.

I guess the thing I was trying to point out was that Cuban’s apology came late and perhaps if it came earlier some of this could have been avoided. I will edit what I wrote above because I think things were out of hand by all parties.

Dallas fans as a whole are not bad, just like Denver fans are not either. A few bad apples shouldn’t ruin the whole bunch.

I watched the replay

I didn’t see any red soda but I did see LaLa throw something at the two women behind her as she was being escorted out of her seat. Obviously that was the end to the confrontation not the beginning, and we have no idea what was said, other than what LaLa says they said. I seriously doubt that it was just something like “oh your man is a thug.” According to LaLa the fans not only insulted her and Melo, but the couple’s young son and called him a name that was not fit to print.

I also saw the bottle being thrown at the Hornet’s bench in game 1 of series 1. You want to know what the biggest difference was between that incident and this one? The fans surrounding the tool that did that assisted Pepsi Center security in removing him from the arena and derided him for his actions. There was no such effort from the other Dallas fans other than to say that the Denver fans deserved it because their players/family members are thugs.

Woody Paige was on 1st & 10 today and said he sat about ten rows behind the player’s families. He said that the heckling of Nuggets family was every bit as bad as has been reported and really even worse. He said Chauncey’s wife was included in the heckling in addition to KMart’s mom and girlfriend and Melo’s girlfriend and son. He said they were screaming racist comments, throwing things, and Dallas was doing very little to protect them. He also said that it was clear that the players knew it was going on and were concerned about the well being of their families during the game. All I can say about that is…that’s messed up!

I stopped reading after Woody Paige

he’s as sensationalist as it gets, and using his word to back up statements are never a good idea. It’d be like me using Randy Galloway of the Fort Worth Star Telegram to back up a point.

And I read that K-Mart’s family/entourage was not only responding to the hecklers, but dropping the N-word to them multiple times. Is it true? Wouldn’t surprise me.

Let’s just enjoy the game tonight and put this water under the bridge, where it belongs. Go Mavs.

yep the lady behind mrs moore

was named peggy and she has been to every mavs game the last three years except 5 when she struggled thru breast cancer. She has not once been known to do anything bad. She said in Game 3 , the Moore’s were quiet and not trash talking at all and were very polite when she spoke to Mrs Moore. She said there were 2 security peope with the Moore’s all the time and LALA and her body gaurd. She said they were extremely rude and trash talking in game 4 to mavs fan which was a complete turn around from game 3. I am sure Cuban roused them up, but doesn’t make it right. She also said Mr. Moore never said a word either game. Besides video showing things differently then what people are saying its all a bunch of he said she said and most will side with their fans ofcourse . So no one will win this lol.

Here here

I still think you have to blame Cuban for showing the way to the Dallas fans, obviously if your owner is throwing insults at family members then the rest of the drunks are going to think that is acceptable behavior, since they know that they won’t be ejected for it.

I also remember that tool getting pointed out in game 1. I just hope the Denver fans don’t get too out of hand tonight, could get ugly.

There are bad fans in every arena

I would hope the Nuggets fans on here are smart enough to distinguish them from the majority of Mavs fans. Blame should lie with those liquored fools for their own actions.

However, I don’t get why people think Cuban should go apologize to K-Mart directly. Say what you will about Cuban, but he was right about K-Mart: he’s a thug, and a hot-headed one at that. Cuban going to him would probably have gotten him in the hospital. The only problem I had was saying it to his mom. I don’t blame Cuban for issuing the apology online, nor do I blame K-Mart for not accepting it.

Christ, I wish we could talk about basketball instead of all this nonsense. It’s such ESPN sensationalism.

The only apology needed...

was a face-to-face apology directly to K-mart’s mother. That would have diffused the entire situation before it even got started and I truly believe none of this fan-heckling would have happened.

Correction to your post title

Put “apologizes” in quotes. That has to be one of the lamest, half-hearted, apologies I’ve ever seen. And, as you pointed out, way too late.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 11/20 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: THE NEW JERSEY NETS
The bad get worse.  Starting out 0-12, these Nets are doing a great imitation of the 1997-98, 11-win Nuggets.  I might have to pay someone to take my Nets tickets when they come to Pepsi Center.

STIFF #2: ALLEN IVERSON
I hate to kick one of my favorite players while he's down, but when even the Knicks won't sign you, you belong on the Stiff List.

STIFF #3: THE SAN ANTONIO SPURS
Richard Jefferson?  Antonio McDyess?  DeJuan Blair?  A healthy Manu Ginobili?  Big deal.  What idiot thought these guys would be neck-and-neck with the Lakers and way better than the Nuggets?  (Oh wait, that would be me.)

STIFF #4: TRACY MCGRADY
After years of suspect handling of his injuries making it virtually impossible for the Rockets to trade him, McGrady goes head-to-head with Rockets coach Rick Adelman demanding to know what his "future" with the organization is.  Tracy, take your league-high $23.2 million and shut the @#$% up.

STIFF #5: DAVID KAHN
Defiant and stubborn as ever, the Timberwolves "president" defended his offseason moves (you know, drafting two point guards before Brandon Jennings not named Brandon Jennings) by proclaiming that the Wolves will be active during next summer's free agent market.  I just pray that Wolves owner Glen Taylor never fires this guy so the Nuggets have four guaranteed wins each season.
