Its funny I read in one of the Blazer threads,

Somebody actually said Steve Blake is a better shooter than JR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My side hurts.

by CCH on Apr 15, 2009 5:42 PM MDT reply actions

Perhaps they're basing it on facts...

In which case Steve Blake shoots 42.8% vs JR’s 39.8%?

In all seriousness, JR Smith is pretty deadly from out there, even if he is just running up the score against the poor playin’ for nothing Kings.

Houston has to come back some since the start, that's good for us.

GO DALLAS!! (AND GO NEW ORLEANS, I PREFER FACE DALLAS THAN NEW ORLEANS, SO IF DALLAS WINS, I NEED NEW ORLEANS TO WIN ALSO)

by Lucas Navarrete on Apr 15, 2009 6:27 PM MDT reply actions

where did all this Portland "well, we've got Oden and Roy and now we're entitled to a FINALS APPEARANCE"

and the constant OH GOD THE REFS THEY’RE ONLY AGAINST PORTLAND WHINE WHINE WHINE CRY CRY CRY sentiment come from?

seriously, I used to consider Portland my second favorite team behind Denver, but I see that shit everywhere and it’s beyond irritating. The hubris and expectations they have borders on are at primadonna levels.

by Colin Neilson on Apr 15, 2009 6:41 PM MDT reply actions

Doesn't explain the hubris this year though.

And that shit can be your downfall. You cannot deny that there are a great deal of Portland fans are stupid as fuck when it comes to crying about fouls – hell, on the SA boards where I post they even admit their announcers fan the “stupid flames” – and generally having unrealistic expectations for a team with basically zero playoff experience.

by Colin Neilson on Apr 15, 2009 6:45 PM MDT up reply actions

Differential reallys means squat.

You gives live and die by Hollinger over there in portland huh?
I’ll take live intangibles over stats any day.

by CCH on Apr 15, 2009 6:48 PM MDT up reply actions

point differential is a better indicator of future success than team record

this has been shown over and over again. by all means, feel free to ignore it though.

by jksnake99 on Apr 15, 2009 6:50 PM MDT up reply actions

HA

ok you take point differential , and I’ll take record, see how high of a seed your point differential gets you. Oh wait, it doesn’t mean shit in the end, nevermind.

for whatever reason, the Blazers have a lot of fans on the internet, and some of them are stupid

because the internet portion of the fanbase is so large, it seems like there are more arrogant jerks, but percentage-wise I think its about the same as any fanbase.

Would like to see where you get the pulse of Portland fans

Our expectations are just make the playoffs. What are nuggets expectations? Just get out of the first round…for once

by Sabonis4Ever on Apr 15, 2009 6:50 PM MDT up reply actions

Just an fyi for anyone not familiar:

Portland has a crazy fan presence on the Sportsnation network. If you want to get in arguments with them, they’ll be around all night.

If you want to talk Nuggets and watch the game, ignore the trolls.

by blooming rock on Apr 15, 2009 6:47 PM MDT reply actions

I personally wouldn't mind if the Rockets won tonight.

I want to see how the Nugs react to a must win (kind of) situation in a big game. Plus, I’d rather see the one man show that is the slumping Hornets than a recently hot Mavs team.

by blooming rock on Apr 15, 2009 6:57 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't know man...

And how about the homecourt in the 2nd round if Nuggets lose..?

by Lucas Navarrete on Apr 15, 2009 6:58 PM MDT up reply actions

So who actually has the tie breaker between the Spurs and Rockets?

I’m assuming it’s the Rockets, since nobody’s talking about the potential of the Spurs sneaking into the third spot unless Houston and Portland lose.

by blooming rock on Apr 15, 2009 7:06 PM MDT reply actions

Yes

It comes down to the 4th tiebreaker, as they are tied on the first 3, and Houston has the better conference record vs. West playoff teams.

I d like to play New Orleans or Dallas, I cannot decide myself, for real, so we need that homecourt advantage in 2nd round.

by Lucas Navarrete on Apr 15, 2009 7:12 PM MDT reply actions

I wouldn't stress

They are gonna play hard reguardless I think. We played them tough without Melo on the road, and they have no one to stop him. Melo laughs at the thought of Batum guarding him I guarantee it.

Mavs are probably our best matchup. But even they have been stepping up their play lately. It will not be easy to get out of the first round this year, but man we just have to do it this time around.

Man … going to be a must win if Denver wants the 2nd Seed. Wouldn’t want it any other way.

The National media has a CRUSH to say the least on the Blazers. Young teams typically don’t have playoff success, but things are crazy.

Can’t wait for tipoff.

I can’t decide if I’d rather see the Mavs or Hornets.

We got a big one tonight fo sho. It should be for the division title but your team just kept on winning. Just shows how everyone of those games was important. I think the Nuggets have def made themselves a genuine elite legit team this year and I congratulate all around.

You got rid of A.I, the most overrated player in the game and got a kick ass Chauncy B in his stead. You guys are pretty darn loaded and nice uniforms to boot. Those brown ones back in the day were pretty bad. Not Oklahoma City bad but bad.

I just thought I’d come over and say nice things before I start to root against you as I very much hope we tan your hides in the Rose Garden tonight.

On a semi-serious note why are b-edgers all over other sites. It is patronising at best and serial trolling at worst. I have seen complaints on many other sites (eg sactown).

From cbssports.com:

The following is an explanation of NBA tiebreaking scenarios.

Determining Ties for Playoff Position
In order to break a tie for playoff positions, if one exists at the end of the regular season, the following criteria will be utilized in the order set forth:

TWO-WAY TIES

1. Results of games against each other.

2. Better winning percentage within own division (only if tied teams are in same division).

3. Better winning percentage against teams in own conference.

4. Better winning percentage against playoff opponents in own conference (including teams that finished the regular season tied for a playoff position).

5. Better winning percentage against playoff opponents in opposite conference (including teams that finished the regular season tied for a playoff position).

6. Better point differential between offense and defense.

between two teams with equal records, point diff says more about who is better than division record

the rules are the rules though, and the Nuggets are the 2 seed. Portland has to go out and win a couple more games next year. I think they will.

good luck in the playoffs, the Nuggets have a good draw and every chance to get to the WCF.

by jksnake99 on Apr 16, 2009 10:56 AM MDT up reply actions

Thank you and good luck to you too.

However, I don’t agree that point differential is a better measuring stick. I think it excessively rewards certain styles of Basketball. I think that teams that tend to play at a slower pace and are more defensive oriented would be at a disadvantage. I think record vs common opponents is a much better comparison.

by PosterNutbag on Apr 16, 2009 11:04 AM MDT up reply actions

well, Portland plays at the slowest pace in the league, so that makes their 2nd best point diff in the West even more impressive

I personally don’t think games against the Thunder an TWolves should be a key factor in breaking ties.

as a stat geek, I suscribe to the gospel of point differential

it isn’t for everyone though. I respect your opinion.

Again, good luck in the playoffs. I am picking you guys over NO, but now that Chandler is back I’m figuring 7 games (I’d go you guys in 5 with a banged up Chandler).

by jksnake99 on Apr 16, 2009 12:31 PM MDT up reply actions

Point Differential

The only problem I see is that it awards certain style of play. You could make a case for leaving the starters in and trying to run up the score as much as possible in an obvious blowout situation.

I’m not saying Portland does that because they don’t. But if meant the difference between a playoff spot or not, then any team would do it. For me, the logical first tiebreaker for Division title is division record.

by runningdonut on Apr 16, 2009 12:43 PM MDT up reply actions

i'm talking about head to head, portland vs denver

i’m not talking about denver playing better than portland against lottery teams. in head to head matchups, the split was 2-2, but last game was a blowout, giving the blazers the clear edge in +/-, for the season.

btw, that means portland played better against east coast teams… portland trashed boston, and went to OT at cleveland. did denver do either of those things?

by NeoSabonis on Apr 16, 2009 10:45 AM MDT up reply actions

ummmm...yes.

We won in Boston 94-85 in a game that wasn’t as close as the score indicates and we also LOST to Cleveland in Cleveland.

Also, you really can’t read too much into a game where the Nugs had nothing to play for. In games where both teams had reason to play the Nugs are 2-1. We won 106-90 and 97-89 and lost at Portland 101-92. I really don’t see how can say that Portland ‘clearly outplayed’ the Nugs in head-to-head games that mattered for the Nugs.

I hate when the aforementioned come into any other team’s site and say it’s not trolling. They’re here to instigate, not provide insight to anything that can be considered “good nature.” The fact is that the game meant nothing to Denver and everything to Portland. That’s the reason for the blowout and nothing else. No matter what the scoring differential, or any other stat in head to head matchups, Denver is still rightfully the division champ and statistically better than Portland.

Meh

Not sure why there are so many fellow Portland fans here talking crap about the Nuggets. Both teams are playing the best out of just about anyone in the Western Conference right now. They’re really the only teams that I think can give the Lakers a decent series.

I’m a Blazer fan but the Nuggets are the rightful division champion. We lost a few games earlier in the season that we shouldn’t have but we’re a much better team now than we were at the beginning. I think that even if the Nuggets had something to play for tonight, we would’ve still beaten them (probably not a blowout) because we play so well at home. We proved this yet again against the Lakers last week, who had home court against the Cavs to play for.

As for arguing over who’s team is better.. it’s going to be completely biased and there’s no way to really tell. We split the season series, finished with the same record, similar home/away records. Statistically better than Portland? Which statistic? You can pick and choose from any random measure that makes your team seem better if you want (like how Portland over the last 25% of the season is averaging the highest game margin of any time in the league). There’s no definitive way to tell unless we were to meet up in a 7 game series.

All in all, good luck to the Nuggets. If we don’t make it past Houston and/or LA, I’ll be counting on you to help stop bitch ass Kobe from getting another ring.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
