Playoff Update April 14th

Playoff seeding will be settled in the next two days. Right now there is still a great possibility that multiple teams will be switching seeding spots. My head hurts from trying to figure this stuff out.

Current Standings with all teams having one game remaining:

1.) L.A. Lakers 64-17 (vs. Jazz tonight)

2.) Denver 54-27 (at Portland, Wed. April 15th)*

3.) Houston 53-28 (at Dallas, Wed. April 15th)#

4.) Portland 53-28 (vs. Denver, Wed. April 15th)^

5.) San Antonio 53-28 (vs. New Orleans, Wed. April 15th)**

6.) New Orleans 49-32 (at San Antonio, Wed. April 15th)##

7.) Dallas 49-32 (vs. Rockets, Wed. April 15th)^^

8.) Utah 48-33 (at Lakers, tonight)>

* The Nuggets can claim the 2nd Seed with a win in Portland or a Houston loss at Dallas. The Nuggets can finish no lower than the 3rd Seed.

# Houston can claim the 2nd Seed with a win and a Nuggets loss. Houston can claim the 3rd Seed with a win and a Nuggets win as they hold tiebreakers over Portland (2-1) and San Antonio (better win % vs. Playoff teams).

^ Portland needs a win vs. Denver to hang on to the 4 Seed or a San Antonio loss. The Blazers hold the tiebreaker with the Spurs (3-1).

** San Antonio needs a win and a Houston loss to claim the 3rd Seed or a win and a Portland loss to claim the 4 Seed. If they remain tied with Portland, the Spurs will be the 5th Seed.

## New Orleans needs a win to claim the 6th Seed or a Dallas loss and a Utah loss. New Orleans holds the tiebreaker over the Mavs with a 3-1 advantage in head-to-head games. Utah holds the tiebreaker over New Orleans going 3-0 in head-to-head games.

^^ Dallas needs a win and a New Orleans loss to claim the 6th Seed. They need a win to ensure at least the 7th Seed.

> Utah can claim the 6th Seed with a win and losses by both Dallas and New Orleans. Utah can claim the 7th Seed with a win and a either a Dallas or New Orleans loss.

Well, ESPN is terrible

Good god, go here:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=SixthMan-0809

and tell me with a straight face that that is not a travesty.

Jason Terry as sixth man of the year, when JR Smith has been playing inspired basketball all season with better numbers and a better overall team record?

Awful. ESPN doesn’t know shit. Especially with phrases like "Nobody expected Denver to win the division with DEFENSIVE STOPPERS MARCUS CAMBY (lol) and EDUARDO NAJERA (lol x2) gone."

Anyway, who cares what awards mean at this point. The only award I care about now is the one awaiting us at the end of a 7 game NBA Finals series.

My friend, here's an important point.

Besides the situations you said for the Nuggets to clinch #2, we can also clinch it if San Antonio wins Wednesday, because they own the tie-breaker over Houston, and we would own the tiebreaker over Houston, because we are division champs and they would not be.

Understand everybody!!!???

by Lucas Navarrete on Apr 14, 2009 12:55 PM MDT reply actions

so...

If San Antonio wins wednesday, no matter what anybody else does. We win #2 seed, even if we lose.

They own the 4th tiebreaker over the Rockets, hahaha, thats tied!!!

GO SPURS WEDNESDAY!!

by Lucas Navarrete on Apr 14, 2009 12:57 PM MDT up reply actions

Sepioes, the 4th tiebreaker is what team has the better record against playoff teams in the West

Do you know for a fact that SAN ANTONIO’S record against current playoff teams in the West is better than Houston’s? Because I can’t seem to find info on that anywhere.

by Colin Neilson on Apr 14, 2009 12:58 PM MDT up reply actions

Again this is San Antonio's record vs. west PLAYOFF teams against Houston's record vs. west playoff teams

Do you have solid numbers on the number of wins San Antonio has vs. West playoff teams versus Houston’s record vs. West playoff teams?

If San Antonio’s is better, then your scenario is right. I would manually add them up but I am at work.

Tyson Chandler is back

And we have owned Utah at home this season. I would be more afraid of Paul-Chandler-West than Deron-Boozer-Korver

I'm not gonna lie.

I’m not 100% sure.
I THINK is this way… 1st of all, I need all the tiebreakers possible.
Then, I will, or someone can do it, do my best to try to figure it out, Im not really sure, I think it is a pretty big possibility tho,,,

by Lucas Navarrete on Apr 14, 2009 1:17 PM MDT reply actions

maybe I'm wrong.

Someone could visit some Spurs blog to try to find this out??? I’m sure they have searched this scenario in some way…

by Lucas Navarrete on Apr 14, 2009 1:21 PM MDT reply actions

Sepioes, sorry, you're wrong

I just added it up and Houston has 3 more wins vs West playoff teams than San Antonio does, which is the 4th tiebreaker. Even if San Antonio wins they will still have a worse record vs Houston against West playoff teams.

Denver must win at Portland OR Houston must lose vs Dallas in order for Denver to get the 2 seed.

by Colin Neilson on Apr 14, 2009 1:22 PM MDT reply actions

my bad then.

nothing to be sorry about my friend, thanks for explanation.

did you take a look at the other 3 tie breakers before that one tho?

because when I said 4th, I really was talking from mind… Maybe Spurs own the 2nd or 2rd tie breaker, which come before.

Could you make sure???

Thanks

by Lucas Navarrete on Apr 14, 2009 1:24 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes

These are the tiebreaker explanations:

 TWO-WAY TIES

1. Results of games against each other. (Tied)

2. Better winning percentage within own division (only if tied teams are in same division). (Tied, assuming both win)

3. Better winning percentage against teams in own conference. (Tied, assuming both win)

4. Better winning percentage against playoff opponents in own conference (including teams that finished the regular season tied for a playoff position). (Houston wins no matter what San Antonio does)

5. Better winning percentage against playoff opponents in opposite conference (including teams that finished the regular season tied for a playoff position).

6. Better point differential between offense and defense.

So yeah…it comes down to the 4th tiebreaker. Of course, that is all moot if Houston loses to Dallas, so the team we should really be cheering for is the Mavs.

by Colin Neilson on Apr 14, 2009 1:29 PM MDT up reply actions

My bad

Or if Denver wins vs Portland

by Colin Neilson on Apr 14, 2009 1:31 PM MDT up reply actions

Tiebreakers

If San Antonio holds the tiebreakers with Houston, and right now their records are tied, wouldn’t San Antonio be the current division leader?

I see Houston listed as the division leader and the Spurs listed as #2, so doesn’t that mean that Houston holds the tiebreaker?

Or does NBA.com have their current positions listed incorrectly?

by All Day Jay on Apr 14, 2009 4:02 PM MDT up reply actions

Correct that Houston owns the tiebreaker over the Spurs ...

As Beefyswats explains … the Rockets have more wins over playoff teams.

Roundball has it as 16-13 for the Rockets vs. 14-14 for the Spurs.

Denver must win in Portland or have Houston lose in Dallas.

Division leader

So why are the Spurs not considered the current divison leader?

by All Day Jay on Apr 14, 2009 4:03 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't think it matters

If Utah loses to the Lakers tonight, they will lock up the 8th spot in the west and get the Lakers in round 1. Leaving Dallas and New Orleans as the 2 possible opponents for the Nuggets. If we win we get New Orleans, if we lose we get Dallas.

Personally I think we maytch up very well against both these teams(swept Dallas plit series with Hornets but that included a loss with Melo not playing)

The only team I feared is Utah cause they are so tough at home, but I don’t see them winning tonight.

by All Day Jay on Apr 14, 2009 3:57 PM MDT reply actions

The Lakers have nothing to play for … yet they can almost choose their playoff opponent.

If they beat the Jazz … they play the Jazz.

If the Lakers lose to the Jazz and Dallas loses then the Lakers would face Dallas.

Any NBA conspiracy theorists think the Lakers will lose to try to play the Mavs instead of the Jazz?

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
