Great article about 'Melo and the state of the small forward position in the NBA
A link posted on Ball don't lie's 10 man rotation but i figured i'd put it up here for those of you who missed it.
I think that the author did a great job of presenting the problems faced by prolific small forwards like Melo and Durant and how more often than not they are viewed as lesser than other stars. Its nice to see someone in the public eye giving Melo the props he deserves
Thoughts?

Good read
SFs are the ultimate point producers these days. You look around the league and we’ve got Melo, Durant, Lebron, Granger, Pierce, etc. Those are some of the flat out best scorers in the league, and best players at that. I don’t see how anybody could overlook the SF position when building a franchise.
Championships
How many championship winning teams of the last 20 years were built around SFs?

Magic Johnson
Pointguard shmointguard that dude was 6’9" I know where he played on the Lakers but still, that’s like acknowledging Tim Duncan as a PF when he knows good and well he’s a C and LBJ is built like a PF and AI is a 2 trapped in a PG body. I go by a players listed height and weight, not where the coach plays him. That’s just me though.
Oh and the Celtics wouldn’t have won if not for Pierce. As much as I hate him, that team was built around him.

Yeah, Pierce
but he needed 2 more All-Stars on his team before he got to the Finals.
Look at the Finals MVPs starting from 1991: Paul Pierce is the lone SF on the list.

Otherwise it’s pretty heavy on Centers (I agree that Duncan is basically a Center) and guards.

Make that 30 years, and go by Joelsopinion's theory that Magic is basically a SF
And you have 2 of the greatest dynastys in basketball history who were built around SF, being the Lakers and the Celtics of the 80s who were built around Bird and Johnson.

well
I buy Tim Duncan as a C instead of a PF, but I don’t buy Magic as a SF.
Really, starting with Jordan in ‘91, almost every championship team has had either a C or a guard as its organizing principle. I consider the Pistons of ’04 and the Celtics of ’08 to be exceptions. Otherwise, it’s Jordan, Shaq, Duncan, Olajuwan for almost all the championships since ’91.

6'9" 255lbs
Run those dimensions against every SF/PF in the league now and years past. Magic was a Big with handles and passing skills. His size also presented mismatches at both ends of the court. Great coaching move playing him at the 1 and 2, it cemented him as a legend

Duncan was only a PF in his formative years with Robinson
Magic goes down as a PG because that is what he played. Duncan should go down as a center. Lebron will go down as a SF, but I’m certain that in 8 years or so, you will see him playing mostly PF.

it was a good read, but its all an opinion
like personally i think the SF is just SG with better rebounding… like really almost all SFs can play SG and PF.. its just a team situation
Unfortunately, after seeing the Lakers vs. Bucks last night, I know even if Melo averages a triple double and the Nuggets are the best team in the NBA, he still won’t get an MVP because the league loves Kobe and LeBron way too much.
The article is right, outside of LeBron who has inflated stats and is a good player who came in overhypped, a SF will have a really hard time being voted MVP.
Exactly how I feel.
I didnt want to make a big post about it…but yeah. That horrible, horrible call that Kobe got in OT when they were down 4 is just unexceptable. Most ridiculous thing ever. I doubt Melo would EVER get that call. Those are saved for Kobe, LBJ….and sometimes (alot of times) D-Wade.

yeah that shit was lame. I get tired of the constant love for Lebron and Kobe. Lebron does his whining about free agency and does his little dancing in the games and he’s the media and the nba’s little darling. JR Smith or Melo dance in games and they’re flashing gang symbols and are thugs. It’s bull shit.
Lebron thinks he's badass
Maybe he has “badass” and “dumbass” confused

I prithee some euro team offers Bron Bron like a billion dollars a year to go play there and I could have a year off from the guy.
They'll offer him that much... to play soccer
According to ESPN, LBJ would be capable of excelling in ANY major sport. Get off his jock, ESPN.

yeah I saw all that too...what an insult to the Cleveland Browns
They may be having a bad year (read: decade) but it doesn’t mean that baby Bron Bron could show up at their practice and be good. I realize he played in high school, but NFL players are just a little bit bigger and faster than high school juniors.
If Lebron played in the NFL
The NBA would rid itself of one of the biggest whiners in the game, the other being Kobe. Melo isn’t a whiner.

i assume everyone either saw the game against chicago or the thing of him on youtube
where he was dancing? there was a point in the game where he was on the bench and the game was going on, as in they were actually playing and he was on the sideline dancing. I can’t stand it.
