A difficult place to live.
As you might know, I'm from Spain, where Pau Gasol is almost a god. The knowledge about NBA is very short here, and people only knows something about the Celtics, and... yes, you guessed it, the Lakers.
People is very passionate about sports in Europe, and so is the people when it comes to Pau Gasol, the idol, the best player in basketball history for many of them(no joke). I've been hearing that Pau should be starting in front of Melo in this year All-Star. I've been hearing that Pau is a better player than Kobe, and it's really hard for a hardcore NBA fan like me to put up with these trash talk.
Being a Denver Nuggets fan and cheering for the Nuggets when they play against L.A is a sin, almost nobody here knows the Denver Nuggets and how good players like J.R and Nenê are.
They think it is really odd to be a fan of the Nuggets knowing that I do not have any common link to the city of Denver, and they think I should always cheer for the spanish player, no matter who he plays against.
I am obviously happy about Gasol being the first spanish player to ever win an NBA ring, don't get me wrong, but all the people around me know that I'd prefer those "black strangers" from Denver to be the current NBA champions.
I thought this point of view about the NBA in foreing countries could be intersting for you, please share all the thoughts you want about it, and, if you could, GIVE ME A REASON TO CONVINCE MY FRIENDS TO CHEER FOR DENVER!
GO NUGGETS!
Write respectfully of your SB Nation community and yourself.

ricky rubio
he is from spain. is that any reason to be a t-wolves fan?
pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow
Wow no!!!
If you ask me, he is very overated.
He is not as good as ESPN and Sports Illustrated think.
I do not think he would have a great NBA career.
He would be nice for a backup PG though, he knows how to read the game, but he doesn’t know how to shoot the ball !!!!

My thoughts exactly
I actually have a bet going with a loud mouthed friend of mine that Rubio WILL NOT be a top five PG when he enters the league. He thinks that the T’Wolves GM has some inside tip on Rubio that others don’t. Besides if he were that good he’d be in the NBA already, I mean there are ways out of contracts.
by Joelsopinion on Dec 14, 2009 1:45 PM MST up reply actions
Well, with Rubio the hard thing is.
If he gets out of that contract, he would not make a $ in the first 2 years in the NBA, because everything he gets paid for goes to his spanish team. That’s a pretty shitty situation right there.
About his skills, I can guarantee you that he WONT be a top 5 PG in the NBA in his whole career.
I know what I’m talking about, I see him play every weekend man, he will not be a top 5 PG in the NBA.
You can say I called it.

If we're wrong though sepios
You wanna go in half on the bet. The wager is a 12 pack to my buddy Jamal. I think he likes Heiniken.
Just kidding. I’ll welch on that bet before I admit Rubio is top five material. After all I am a Stiff.

I'm telling you we are not wrong hahaha
I know about Ricky, don’t worry about it, he won’t be in the NBA in less than 2 or 3 years

I also root for the Nuggets despite not having any real connection to the city
But I’m still not sure why.
I guess I started becoming a fan after Melo was drafted. I’ve always liked his style of play even if, unfortunately, his defense can be frustrating at times. Then, over the years, I went from being a fan of the player to a fan of the team.
As far as reasons to cheer for the Nuggets…I’d have to say when everyone is healthy and they’re playing smart, there’s no team in the league I’d rather watch. And they’re just a lot of fun to follow. They aren’t the Lakers, who you know for a fact are gonna compete for a title every year, and they aren’t the Bobcats, who you know for a fact are gonna suck and fight just to reach the 8th seed. They’re a team that, while tremendously talented, still have that element of surprise, where you don’t know where they’ll finish up, cause even one major injury could take them down four or five seeds.
I guess the main thing...
You just know that one day if they ever figure it out and start playing smart and hard the whole season, this’ll be a heck of a team.

Similar situation here.
I probably became a Denver Nuggets fan because of Melo’s drafting, he is just my favorite player.
But now, I’m a Nuggets fan even more than I am a Melo fan.
If we would trade Melo, I’d cheer and root hard for him, but the Nuggets would still be my team.

i live in australia.
as a young kid i loved allen iverson (and still do.) i used to go for philly when i was little.. My entire family is Lakers, and even when i was a young kid i really didn’t like Lakers for some reason..when Iverson was traded to Nuggets i sort of followed him to denver and eventually started going for them..over the years when iverson was here, i fell in love with the city of denver, the nuggets and all of its players. when Iverson was traded to detroit i just stayed with the nuggets because they are my team now..they always will be..Nugget for life!!

That's great you are a fan of Pau, but if you are truly a fan of the NBA nationality shouldn't matter
I totally understand people from Spain being Lakers fans as they follow their player, Pau, wherever he goes. But, after you watch the NBA enough, you should develop a likeness of other players as well. I, for example watch so much NBA that I have favorite players, and thus root for the teams they play for, similar to what you have done with the Nuggets it sounds like. Some of my favorite players are D-Wade, Al Jefferson, Ray Allen, Danny Granger, Amare Stoudemire and Shaq of course, so in turn I generally root for the teams they play for. But there is nothing like the Nuggets. When we are playing at our full potential there is no other team that is more exciting to watch.
and that is exactly what I'm saying
The majority of people here in Spain is a Pau Gasol fan, and I’m an NBA fan, but even above that are the Nuggets.
I even prefer Calderon and Marc than Pau…

That's my issue with China
No jokes here, they’re all just excited that two of their comrades are in the NBA. So much so that Yao will most likely be voted as an All star starter this year, and Yi will get more votes than he ever deserves.

I always was a Billups fan b/c he was from Denver. Not a Pistons fan at all, but always rooted for CB to do well.

I think the Lakers are the most popular team in a lot of international places
I’m from Germany and although I have lived in the US since I was 2 I always visit there once a year. There the Mavs aren’t that big of a shit even though Dirk plays for them, and you see more Laker jersey’s than Mavs, probably because it’s trendy. Overall Spaniards care more about basketball than Germans though, who would probably rank bball about 30th in most popular sports in the country. Also in China though, Kobe jersey’s are just as popular as Yao jersey’s I believe.
Look, it's a bird...no, it's a plane....oh never mind it's just fucking balloon boy
Yeah that's true
Kobe and the Lakers are the most popular NBA team in this decade.
Here in Spain basketball is the 2nd sport (just after soccer), so yes, I believe the overall spaniard cares more than the overall german.

a wonderful place to live
Where in Spain are you from, Sepioes? I spent a summer living with a family in Barcelona and my host and all his friends were basketball CRAZY! I have a lot of great memories hanging at the basketball court with those folks. My most distinct memory while I was there was while watching a TV broadcast when Camby laid down a dunk (playing for the Knicks then), and the announcer exuberantly referred to him as Marcus “Samurai” Camby (b/c of his tattoos). I need to get back there; Spain is amazing. Let the Nuggets worldwide takeover continue!!!

Im from Valencia, 200 miles south to Barcelona!!
I have been to Barcelona many times and it is a great city.
That announcer you are referring to is Andres Montes, he was amazing. Unfortunately, he passed away last month. Sports world was really sad about his death, and mostly NBA fans, because he was announcing the NBA for about 14 years with his incredible passion. R.I.P Montes!
GO NUGGETS!!

Sepioes
Sorry to hear about Señor Montes. His passion was tremendous, as it still stuck with me to this day. Unfortunately, I never made it to Valencia, but my sister has expressed an interest in moving there to teach next year. I did also go north-west for a basketball tournament in Burgos, another beautiful city with rich history, and like I said before, everyone I met was b-ball CRAZY in Spain!
Hopefully we’ll continue to see more Spanish talent in the NBA in the coming years… know any seven footers that want to play in Denver? Another less than serious question, but do you know anyone who despises Birdman for stuffing that layup back into Rudy Fernandez’s face last season? Sorry to Rudy, but that was a top ten Nugget highlight from last season. I hope that didn’t give anyone a reason to cheer against the Nugs…

Montes was just amazing, the NBA in Spain has lost a lot since he passed away…
Oh, does your sister really want to come to Valencia to teach? That would be pretty nice man, it is a beautiful, warm weather city, if you just want some information about Valencia, or about the spanish school system feel free to send me an e-mail and I will be glad to help you and your sister.
We don’t have many 7 footers in Spain, but it would be nice to have Felipe Reyes. He is a little undersized (I’m guessing he is like Griffin or so), but man he hustles inside like it is his last game. He is really amazing rebounding and he could be a nice backup if he played along the Birdman.
By the way, I’m gonna tell you that the Nuggets should have kept Sergi Lull’s rights. He is a nice PG, I know you people don’t even know his name, but he is young, he can go inside, he can shoot the mid-range, and he can definitely pass the ball… I’m sad we sold his rights…
Yeah, I know some of my friends hate the Birdman because of that block (not because the block but because the cellebration hahaha). They say he is a clown, but hey, that was simply AMAZING.

The Denver Nuggets
Are a team that have had years where they seemed to have the cards stacked against them, and yet they were still able to thrill at times when it meant the most. I remember the Nuggs being able to shut down the Bulls when Jordan was still with them and thats the kind of performance that makes you want to root for them. In recent years they’ve been the team that have the ability and talent to just really light up the their opponents sometimes. While it doesn’t happen every game, when it does happen, its enough to really make you want to watch EVERY game just in case that special Nuggets team shows up and just DESTROYS whoever is unlucky enough to be the other team that night. Lets face it not too many teams have had a 58 point lead in the playoffs….
