Allen Iverson may return as a Sixer Monday...against the Nuggets

Allen Iverson could be back in a Philadelphia 76ers uniform as early as next Monday night.

Two sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that the Sixers are indeed targeting Monday's home game against the Denver Nuggets -- another of Iverson's former teams -- if they go forward with what appears to be a growing intent to bring back their controversial franchise icon.

ESPN

Ironically I already had tickets for this game as of about two weeks ago.  I've yet to see the Nuggets live, so for my first time I have to admit that I'm pretty psyched to see them in Philly.  Now, if AI returns on that night, all the better.

Maybe.

Obviously I'll be the odd man out in Philly which is, safe to say, a city where I've never once rooted for the home team in any of the four sports I've attended.  So perhaps this is just another chance for some of the old school fans to come back out again or maybe an opportunity for a few of those fans who buy into the media hype just to say they were there for his return.

I'm interested in what you guys are thinking/have to say about the probability of this match up.  I know we all missed out on the opportunity to see him lose back on Nov 1 since he was still out with an injury, so I'd like to see him make good on that.

Or it could all amount to nothing and AI will still be homeless by next Monday.

Either way I'll be there in my Melo alternate jerz hoping that AI makes his return and the Nugs smoke him and the Sixers.

lol

Pretty ironic how that works out that his first game back will be against our Nuggs. I would love to see how the speed of Lawson can keep up with A.I.’s. Hopefully this deal gets done cuz i dont think both Melo and Chauncey hav played Iverson together yet have they? I thought Melo was injured both Pistons games last year, but i could be wrong….

Yeah

I don’t exactly remember either, but I think that was the case with Melo. I do remember us being down 2 (or 3?) in the final seconds and AI fouling J.R. in the act of shooting a 3…and J.R. blowing the FTs. I think so at least. :P

melo was suspended for the game in detroit

that was chauncey’s first time back in detroit. pistons won both games last year. melo had a broken hand and his elbow injury last season. he only played 66 games. i thought he played the game in denver.

Feel free to post some pictures from Philly if you want after the game Frank. Could be pretty sweet.

It’d be a crazy matchup. I wonder if A.I. does sign there how much he’ll play and if he’ll start like he wants to.

Guess we’ll know more here soon …

I’m normally not much a camera guy (mainly because my camera sucks) but I’ll see what I can do. If anything I’m sure my buddy will have his.

I think he has a shot at being the starter he wants to be. Lou Williams is out for a month with a fractured jaw and they’re relying on Jrue Holiday, a first-year guy, to take care of business at the point. For some reason I see this going through like the Brett Favre-to-Jets crap that went down last season. Both will walk in as starters and finish up the season as starters, regardless of how much they are actually hurting the team.

Yeah they say Lou Williams could miss up to 8 weeks.

So Iverson better start. What you gonna start Jrue Holiday over Iverson? I hope not!

But then again…once detroit decided to bring A.I. off the bench, they chose to play Will Bynum over Iverson. Bynum is decent…but you just traded for a hall of famer….

I don’t see Philly taking him out once Williams comes back either, but I suppose that’s also relative to what he does on the court while Williams is still out. I think they’ll let AI ride out the season and maybe retire a Sixer, if he really wants to do so at the end of the season. Otherwise A.I.’s Offseason Drama continues during the summer.

I'm happy for A.I.

I hope he has a good game, but we still should win.

It does feel weird not having Iverson in the NBA.

I agree

You have to have guys like AI, it makes it more interesting and fun.

Without question

one of the most entertaining basketball players in the history of the game. Loved watching him play all out, every single game.

I sat 12 rows up, behind the Nuggets bench while he was here and the guy would take off his kicks and toss them up into the crowd at the end of the game. Nice souvenirs from a hall of famer to be. I hope he can go out with pride and dignity and that they retire his number in Philly.

Good for AI, Good for Philly

I would hate to think AI played his last games, albeit only three, in a Grizz jersey. He belongs in Philly and Philly belongs with AI. Despite the fact that with out Lou Will they have no options, AI will put butts in the seats in Philly more then anywhere else. Here’s hoping this doesn’t blow up in his face

Good luck avoiding a fight

Philly fans are some of the nastiest around. You might want to wear a philly jersey just to protect yourself. A few years back, at an NFL game, a bunch of them jumped a 60 plus year old Washington fan and left him with broken bones. They put a jail in the basement of their new NFL stadium and have a judge there for games for all the people they arrest.

by KarlSucks on Dec 2, 2009 8:54 AM MST reply actions

True

They’ve got a a drunk tank, holding cells, and a judge, so they can process everyone nice and quick-like.

Is this true?

That’s pretty hard to believe, but funny either way.

I think that was at the old Veterans Stadium. I believe it has since been removed, but I can only attest for Wachovia Center. Not sure about The Linc or Citizens Bank Park.

I’ve been to many a games in Philly. I went to Sixers/Hawks and Sixers/Mavs last season, but I also didn’t have much interest vested in either team. I was just there for the game itself. But nothing’s more heated than a Penguins/Flyers hockey game, especially when I’m a Penguins fan watching the game in Philly. I’ve been on the receiving end of many insults, including one more recent one from a little kid leaning out his dad’s pick up who told me to go F myself.

But I’ve had some good experiences, if not slightly weird, too. Like the time a security guard nabbed a scalper and told him to hand over the tickets and get lost, then turned around and sold them to me for $20.

Ah Philly.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
