4 Games in, Interesting Nuggets stats:

Positives

- 2nd, PPG

- 1st, FTA

- 1st, PPS (points per shot)

- 6th, Adj. FG%

- 2nd, TO/G (12.8)

- 9th, APG

- 1st, A/TO

- 1st, Off. RTG (117.9)

Negatives

- 16th, Total RPG

- 14th, SPG

- 13th, BPG

- 17th, Def. RTG (107.5)

***

Obviously, this is small sample size theater, but I'd say the Nuggets have a lot of positives to look at through these first few games.  We really need to tighten up on the defense, the rebounding in particular disturbs me.  It suggests that against teams with a strong interior game (Lakers, Magic, Celtics) we're going to get murdalated.

Offensive statistics are great.  1st in assists per turnover, 1st in points per shot, 1st in offensive rating?  I'll take that any day.

Subjectively . . .

It looks like strong interior teams will murder us . . .

Portland sure killed us inside and if they had hit a few shots and ‘Melo has missed a couple, we wouldn’t be so happy about the start right now.

Yeah

Lakers, Magic, and Celtics are the teams with the scariest frontcourts to me. When we run up against them, Karl has got to figure out a gameplan to somehow keep Nene and/or Chris Andersen on the floor at all times or we’ll simply get destroyed.

No team in the NBA can consistently "destroy" the Nugs

You’ll see, the Nugs can morph styles when they play different teams. Granted, their hardest matchups will be teams with great interior players but the Nugs are not a team that gets “destroyed.” JR will change the team a lot. When they play teams like the Magic, Celtics, Spurs, and Lakers expect to see JR, Chauncey, and Melo to step behind the arc quite a bit more.

If AA started in place of AC

then our stats would look even better. AC’s presence has put us in holes in every first quarter, IIRC. Why Karl played him for so many minutes, particularly last night, is completely beyond me. Maybe a letter campaign to the FO can convince them to trade him or buy him out, just to stymie Karl’s idiocy. Ok, maybe stupid idea, but I’m getting frustrated here. I mean, come on, Graham has to break a toe to finally get Balk some minutes? AC starting, for christ’s sake??!?!?! Other teams have been taking advantage of that big time, and if not for Melo’s stellar play, we are not where we currently are. Karl, do you need a crowbar to pull your head out of your ass? Seriously.

With a possible Bird injury, our frontcourt weakness will come to the fore. Hope hes ok.

When JR comes back, AC's going to be relegated to a backup role

I’ve been saying this for a while now. When you’re missing one of your best players, coming off the bench or not, your lineups are going to change. Right now, AC is filling the hole that JR would normally be in. When JR is back, I would expect a guard rotation like this:

PG: Chauncey/Lawson/AC
SG: JR/Afflalo

Afflalo has proven that he’s capable of scoring 15+ off the bench, so I see no reason to not start JR now. With Chauncey starting at PG, there’s no way that he’s going to be able to break significant minute rotation.

Keep in mind, that as much as we like to rag on Carter, he has not played terribly this season. In 90 minutes on the court, he has only turned the ball 3 times. That is .75 turnovers/game, which is not bad at all. Obviously he’s not contributing much else, but you cannot say that he’s been careless with the ball so far.

In fact, Carter has a 3.25/1 A/TO ratio. Not bad at all

Course, he’s 34 and plays matador defense, so there’s that.

AC's 'not bad' play just irritates me more

Why start a backup point guard at the two spot?

by Ski Bum on Nov 4, 2009 11:09 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Because the starting SG is suspended?

Who scores off the bench if Afflalo starts?

Listen

I’m all for giving skilled rookies their due, but Lawson is still a rookie. To place the scoring responsibility almost primarily on him as a rookie PG off the bench is retarded, which is why Karl is rotating him with Carter and Afflalo.

Seriously, people freaking out constantly about Karl and AC are just retarded. Let JR come back and rotations solidify before you chicken littles pull the rest of the roof down on your head.

But what if the sky IS falling?

I’d bet that even Anthony Carter’s MOTHER scratched her head when she saw her son in the starting line-up! I have buddies that actually truly appreciate AC’s skills (that game winner in Houston still makes me smile at the thought…) and even they couldn’t believe it that he is still on the team much less STARTING?!? It doesn’t make much sense at all and the “Chicken Littles” are remembering that Karl’s late season and playoff man crush on AC most certainly cost us a shot at the World fucking Championship!?!? What if GK can’t be objective about AC and it costs us some crucial games again?

Don’t get me wrong: I am not one of the guys on the site that think that Lawson should be getting 30+ minutes/game or starting. I do, however, certainly understand why everyone cringes at the prospect of AC’s role on our Nuggets getting bigger rather than smaller. Even so, I believe (and have posted it in other streams) that JR’s return will make all of this Lawson/Carter debate moot.

Best case scenario? AC plays well enough that we can actually get something in return for him in a mid-season or off-season trade…

Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.

Yikes...

Take a deep breath, partner…

I was only pointing out that Lawson is capable of scoring off the bench for us. I wasn’t calling anyone “retarded”, as you’re so apt to mention, I wasn’t calling out the coach or Carter for their respective coaching decisions or play on the court.

Since we’ve broached the subject however… I’ll lend my 2 cents…

I would actually prefer to see a starting lineup of Billups, Afflalo, Anthony, Martin, and Nene with Lawson and Smith coming off the bench as a wicked change of pace.

by aLuffabo on Nov 4, 2009 1:31 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I hear you, but I don't think I agree

Lawson’s had a few decent games in the NBA, but as a rookie, it’s way too early to tell whether or not he’s going to be proficient enough at scoring to be the primary option off the bench.

I like your rotation for the starting lineup, but the starting job has been promised to Smith and I’m sure he’d implode if he doesn’t get it this year.

You’re right, JR would freak if he didn’t start… I still think that would be a better starting lineup and 1-2 punch between Lawson and JR coming off the bench.

I go by what I see, and regardless of the fact that Lawson is a rookie, the kid can play and is ready to contribute. Will he take some 1st year lumps and make some mistakes? Of course, but I think he is poised enough and more than capable to be more of a positive impact than a negative when he is in the game.

BIG MICKEY D HAS A POINT

There is absolutely no reason for AC to be doing anything other than spelling guys that need a break. don"t have the #‘s in front of me but im pretty sure AC’s steals to turnover ratio is on the wrong side. he is a defensive liability. And we should all be scared that his role is growing as he gets older and the fact of the matter is, NO ONE gets better the older they get. And hes not even a Brian Dawkins type emotional leader! I bet theres not a lot of guys in the locker room wondering what AC’s up to after the game….

THE STIFF LIST (as of 3/8 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: K-MART'S LEFT KNEE
Best-case scenario, K-Mart misses another week or two with a sore knee.  Worst-case, he's done for the season with knee surgery.

STIFF #2: RON ARTEST
Nice hairdo.  'Nuff said.

STIFF #3: JOEL PRYZBILLA
The Blazers backup center re-injured his surgically repaired right knee after slipping in the shower.  Now we're just waiting for Greg Oden to slip on a banana peel.

STIFF #4: CAVALIERS FANS
Recently set the world record for the largest gathering of people wearing fleece blankets - i.e. Snuggies.  Really?!  This is worthy of a world record?!

STIFF #5: BOSTON CELTICS
Losing to the pathetic Nets and almost losing to the Wizards is one thing.  But to do so at home within a week of each other...now that's an art.  I think it's safe to assume the Celtics are going nowhere in this year's playoffs.
