Lovin' the Nugs.
I am an avid MHR reader, and just found out about this blog a few days ago and joined up. I'm glad to be here! It's nice to have a place to talk Nuggets with fellow fans being as I'm stuck in south Texas all by my lonesome in Spurs country (yick!). Anyways, I was writing these thoughts down in a comment but decided to just make it a fanpost (because I done wrote too much!), I apologize if the content is repetitive as I haven't seen all the threads leading up to the season....
Does anyone else get the feeling that this team is more focused and complete than ever before? I feel like Melo is setting the tone right now, and this team is not one that will take many nights off or lose to teams that it shouldn't. I really like they way they look right now. I agree with you Nate, what's the deal with Balkman?!?!?!? Along with Lee, he was the only player I liked on the Knicks roster when he was there... and was pumped when we picked him up. I expected him to get in the rotation and get regular minutes, I just can't figure out why he rarely gets any playing time. He seems like the type of player GK values given his versatility, toughness, and hustle... what gives? I am loving the Afflalo pickup. I liked him in college and am excited we got him to replace Jones, I think he will end up being an upgrade over Dahntay, as much as I liked him. Between adding Lawson and the other acquisitions in the offseason, I think we are definitely a more complete roster this year. Couple that with Melo's insanely high level of play so far, Chauncey's familiarity with the team in his second year, and what I think will be another slight breakout season based on his performance in the playoffs for JR Smith, and I really think we sit firmly in the "legit contender" category.
As I have seen and participated in discussions on the subject here, our biggest weakness is interior defense of good big men, and to a lesser extent on offense, a low post scoring presence. Even with these issues, I believe our club is good enough to beat the elite and win the championship.
Back to the lineup, here's a fun thought: We could possibly trot out a lineup of Ty Lawson, Chauncey Billups, JR Smith, Carmelo Anthony, and Nene at some point this season... Is that not the Howitzer of offensive basketball? If that lineup got extended playing time, how do they not score 140 points a game? And yes, I am going to completely ignore the fact that the other team might score the same on us... that would be pure basketball fun!
Thanks for listening. Go Nuggets!

multi dimensional
when jr returns he will be able to drive to the rim and dish off to the bigs for easy dunks. the only problem with smith is if he gets carried away with taking 3 point shots. there is nothing wrong with taking a 3 pointer as long as it comes within the context of running the offense. the best STARTING line up is jr, chauncey, melo, kmart and nene. the best RUNNING line up will be ty, jr,melo, balkman and nene. denver has all kinds of options besides those two. balkman had an ankle injury toward the end of the last preseason game. i do not know if that is the problem. right now denver has 4 new players on the roster. nugs know what they have with balkman and he has been in their system for over a year. the new players have a new system to learn and need all the time they can get in game situations.
pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow
I'm also new to the blog via MHR
and also living in Texas (I should say Austin rather) so you are not alone. I’m definitely going to the Nuggs/Spurs game Dec 5. My one question is anyone know where the name ‘Stiffs’ come from?
But I agree about this team, specifically Melo. Melo’s always been a guy who all smiles all the time, I don’t see that this year and I think it’s a good thing. Our team has holes defensively but offensively I think the way Melo is playing will overcome our deficiencies in other areas. Those deficiencies tend to get exposed in the playoffs however. Another big is a definite need. If any of our bigs go down to injury I think we could be in serious trouble, but as it stands we’re definitely conference championship material again. I anticipate our road to the WCF being tougher than last year (we definitely lucked out in seeding last year unlike the previous 5 years). If JR can just become a solid perimeter defender I think we would be very dangerous and definite title contenders.
The following appears on the "Home" page in the right hand column:
Welcome to Denver Stiffs.com!
In 1976, the Denver Nuggets were one of four American Basketball Association teams to be absorbed into the National Basketball Association. 33 years later, the Nuggets are the only ABA holdover never to have appeared in an NBA Finals.
In fact, the Nuggets 33-year tenure in the NBA has produced three Western Conference Finals Appearances, five 50-win seasons, 12 first round playoff exits (including five of the last six), 13 seasons in which the team missed the playoffs altogether, and three in which the team didn’t even win 20 games. And our cumulative record? 1266-1440 (a .468 winning percentage).
To quote legendary Nuggets coach Doug Moe, this franchise has been chock full of "stiffs" for over 30 years. And we – the fans – aren’t going to take it without standing up for all the members of Nuggets Nations.
Without any reservations, restrictions or semblance of good taste, this blog speaks up for Nuggets fans everywhere. In return for the hard-earned money we pay for tickets, apparel, food and parking at the Pepsi Center, and so on, all we ask is that our owner, management, coach and players care more about the outcome of each game than we do. For if they don’t, this blog will put them on the STIFF LIST and demand that they either shape up, or ship out.
We welcome comments, feedback and suggestions. Please email us at denverstiffs@gmail.com or ntimmons73@yahoo.com.

I was also wondering about the Stiffs moniker...
That is hilarious!
After watching the likes of McCloud and Ryan Bowen try to lead the Nuggets to victory for years, I couldn’t be any more excited about the team we have now. It’s just fun to have a team with a legitimate superstar budding before our very eyes, and a team that is capable of winning any game they play in. Good times!
And thanks to Andrew and Nate for fighting the good fight!
Welcome aboard skithebert ...
I was in Austin this past summer (mid-August) for a Fantasy Football draft … crazy city and a lot of fun down on 6th Street.

Interesting
‘Stiffs’ has such a negative connotation that I initially thought this was some Laker board to hate on the nuggets.
I’m a CO native though just in gradschool down here. I miss the mountains but Austin really is a great place. Although it is NOT the place to visit in mid-August. What were you thinking? Come at this time of the year and its absolutely beautiful weather.
I don't know what I was thinking to tell you the truth. Got the invite and decided to brave the heat.
Probably the worst decision of my young life. That place is by far the hottest place I’ve ever been. And the worst part … all the rooftop patios had the outdoor dance areas … it was like sweatfest-2009 at all those places. Although we had a ridiculously nice vacation house that roughly 16 of us stayed at.

Don't ever go to Houston then
its much more humid there. and the city sucks. the heat isn’t so bothersome when you get used to it surprisingly. you just accept the fact that you are sweaty all the time. at this point i’d rather have the heat than to suffer thru some blistering cold east coast/midwest winter. CO weather is still the best though.
