Lawson vs. Carter Part 4

STARTERS MIN FGM-A 3PM-A FTM-A OREB DREB REB AST STL BLK TO PF +/- PTS
Anthony Carter, PG 31 2-6 0-2 0-0 1 4 5 5 1 2 1 2 +8 4
BENCH MIN FGM-A 3PM-A FTM-A OREB DREB REB AST STL BLK TO PF +/- PTS
Ty Lawson, PG 13 1-3 0-0 2-2 1 2 3 1 1 0 2 0 +1 4

Why did AC play so much more than Lawson? I'm not saying that Carter played bad necessarily, but I don't think that he played that much BETTER. Carter had a better game due to the +/- differential, but Lawson didn't get much of a chance. He played the third least amount of minutes in front of Balkman (4) and Allen (8). Besides, even if Lawson was playing bad it's not as if the game was close enough that he could ruin it. These would've been great experience minutes. Oh well, looks like Carter got to pad his stats while Lawson didn't get to play on his birthday :'(. Poor guy. Well, I don't understand this. Any thoughts?

3rd quarter comeback

denver was out scored 32 to 28 and indy had 2 runs in the quarter. the first 3 games afflalo and lawson get paired in the back court mid way through the third quarter when chauncey and melo go to the bench for the 4th quarter. ac knows the half court set offense better then ty at this stage. afflalo, graham and allen got a chance to run the offensive plays in a game situation. this will help later in the road trip. six games with 3 back to backs the bench will need to be able to execute the half court offense. the big thing is billups played less than 31 minutes.

Seems

To me that GK isn’t the only one with a Man Crush for AC
What half court set offense does the Nuggets have? None
AC had four points in 31 minutes. How is it that so called intellegent fans don’t realize that when AC is on the court the opposing team has the advantage. The Nuggets are playing four against five. There’s no scoring coming from the pg position unless the pg is being played by CB1 or Ty Lawson. What would the game have been like if AA hadn’t caught fire from the 2. AC didn’t make his shot until garbage time. Need I say anything about that stupid pass he tried to give Bird.
Why do these so called intellegent fans live in denial? AC blows

Back-to-Back on the road...

The number of back-to-backs that the Nuggets have (21 – most in the WC) this year has been fairly well covered by Nate, Andrew and the rest of us. I think that the point that no one has really made and that seems to fit right here is that a road back-to-back changes EVERYTHING! The way you coach, minutes, offensive/defensive strategy, even equipment! I’m sure that Lawson was being “saved” for tonight and that tomorrow everyone will have a new theory about who GK’s favorite Billups back-up is. Fact is, though, that we still won’t know. GK is one of the most successful (in terms of wins) coach in NBA history and just passed Red Auerbach in that category. He probably hates AC like we all do but has a very specific, tried and true algorythm that tells him how many minutes a rookie 1 can play in the first 2 weeks and still have legs in week 3. There is likely to be a VERY specific equation about how much rest is too much rest and how much PT is too much even for a very young rookie in perfect health. NBA Basketball is a multi-billion dollar industry. I guarantee that there is a helluva lot more that the average fan DOESN’T know about the details than we actually do know…

Did I miss something?

Did we lose a game that we surely would have won had R. Balkman been in the game? Balkman isn’t getting PT because we don’t need him just yet. Everyone that is needing rest is getting rest and Balkman has had some soreness and some off-court shenanigans that have probably moved him into “garbage time only” for the time being…

GK probably hates AC?!

Pah! Crazy talk. You had me going with the back to backs tho…didnt think about that. We’ll see if Lawson gets his minutes tonight.

by GottaLoveMelo on Nov 4, 2009 10:10 AM MST up reply actions

Kidding...

Clearly GK has some strange love for AC that doesn’t get translated well to the average fan. I was kidding suggesting that GK hates him. Point remains though that we have no idea at all what “science” GK and his team of coaches and trainers are utilizing when they are trying to figure out PT goals for each player. I’d bet just about anything that each player is necklaced with some sort of “MAX MINUTES” rule before each and every game and that – barring injury or other unforseens – Lawson wasn’t going to get more than 17-20 minutes last night no matter what… We all need to give the NBA a little more credit than we do. It is a long season with lots of moving parts that the TV and internet get only a glimpse of…

Too much credit

If GK had algorithms for PT, surely he would have inbound plays.

by Artimus Mangilord on Nov 4, 2009 9:17 AM MST reply actions

Funny but...

That’s a great shot at GK (truly) but do you really think that GK and his coaches are oblivious to PT and its relationship to late season fresh legs? There are almost four thousand minutes in an NBA season and I PROMISE that almost all of them for every player and on every single team have been theoretically allocated before the season ever starts. Guaranteed.

Starting AC?

Seriously, why did AC play for 30+ min’s, so Karl can save his 22 yr old? I think Ty can run circles around AC any time, anywhere. Maybe when JR comes back we’ll see some changes, but I foresee AC favoritism continued and more worthy players getting the shaft. We’ve been lucky so far, weak opponents and Melo playing his face off, but this will eventually cost the Nugs victories.

Why is AC starting? It’s a defensive liability that other teams have capitalized upon so far, and will continue to do so as long as Karl keeps starting him. AA would be better as a starter, now and perhaps even after JR returns, than AC. Starting a backup point who contributes nothing offensively at the two spot makes absolutely no sense to me at all.

Just ask Lawson himself...

Did you see all the post-game after the Nuggets’ first back-to-back? Lawson’s first professional back-to-back? Every question to Lawson and quote from him was about intensity and how different the NBA is compared to his time at UNC in terms of back-to-backs and energy. Sure, we’d all assume that 22 year old legs are tougher and fresher but the fact is quite the opposite. If Lawson gets 30+ tonight and AC < 15, do I get to be a genius?

For the record

I think that we should have dealt AC in the off-season. In my world, contract or no contract, if you perpetrate the critical turnover in two HUGE playoff losses and single-handedly deflate an entire organization, you don’t get to wear the jersey again. F*ck AC. He should be long gone…

Ty could have benefited from playing in this game more than AC

against like-sized opposition where he’s not such a mismatch on D. I have no doubts about Ty’s work ethic or ability to keep up physically, despite his comments. He’s in the NBA now, and I don’t think he’ll sqander the opportunity. At least he’s capable of 30+, where AC is guaranteed <15 every night, regardless of context. AC seems to be relying on the opportunity provided by Karl’s man crush and Melo’s ability to carry the team.

And why start two point guards, particularly if one of them is arguably in the bottom 5 of all NBA players? Karl’s reliance on AC will come back to bite the Nugs sooner or later.

Ok, we’re 4-0, so I shouldn’t get riled up.

by Ski Bum on Nov 4, 2009 11:24 AM MST up reply actions

I don't think the stats are accurate

I saw a sequence last night where AC on one possession made a bad pass resulting in a turnover; subsequent offensive possession, AC forces a pass to a driving Anderson, who is headed into the teeth of the D, pass bobbled, turnover. Was the second turnover credited to Bird? It was really AC’s fault, yet he only has one TO listed in your stats above.

Bench scoring and energy

While the “Lawson v. Carter” debate is fun for now (but sort of stupid because NO ONE has landed on the AC side yet so it’s not really a debate as much as it is a communal rant…) the real debate is going to happen sometime soon about Afflalo v. Smith and whether or not we want Smith’s energy and scoring coming off the bench or starting the game…

my theory

when jr comes back, take ac out of the equation and put smith in his place. nothing changes with the roles of the rest of the players except billups is back to playing point full time. the big issue with the point guard position is NOT ac vs. ty. it is ac + ty = reduced minutes for billups. indy game cb played 30:28 = mission accomplished.

Painful as AC is to watch make errors . . .

I think it is entirely possible that we focus on his negatives and understate his positives. E.g. Carter has as many steals as turnovers this year and Carter steals often lead to fastbreak baskets.

Carter appears to get rountinely schooled by good shooting gaurds, but . . last season Opp shoot 2% less against the Nuggets when Carter was on the floor and average 2 pts less per 100 poss. He is certainly an offensive liability but if you have Billups / Melo and Nene on the court with him, who cares?

Okay, there is my “debate” .

On the other hand, in every game this season, I have mumbled “He is not good enough to play in the NBA.” Couldn’t we have drafted Blair instead of resigning Carter?

Stats

Statistics don’t show the true picture of how sorry this POS is in game situations.
He pads his stats in GARBAGE time.
Don’t doubt your eyes and what they are seeing. AC sucks.

by samdman on Nov 4, 2009 4:26 PM MST up reply actions

If you want

bench scoring and energy, Lawson is a much better fit. Even Balkman fits that mold better than AC. 4 pts in 31 mintues isn’t saying much

1. THE NUGGETS AT HOME
How is it possible that a Nuggets team with this much talent can be 7-5 at home?! Things have gotten so bad that fans are clamoring for J.R. Smith to return.

2. CARMELO ANTHONY
Kobe Bryant plays through any and all ailments. Melo uses any and ailments as an excuse not to play.

3. KEVIN LOVE
Just when the T'Wolves are looking better, Love stomps on Luis Scola and lands himself a two-game suspension.

4. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
The 'Cats have lost 11 straight and are now 3-21 ... in the Eastern Conference! This is what happens when you let an underwear salesman with a Hitler mustache run your team.

5. MIKE BROWN
Dr. Bunsen Honeydew (Google it!) got himself a one-game suspension for making contact with a referee.
