7 Footer for Playoff Run
What do you guys think about reacquiring Camby at the trade deadline for the playoff run? I'm not a huge Camby fan, but he might become available if the Clippers try to get under the cap...If they could get him to play the right role, could be a good get. I'm not 100% on how the trade exemptions work, but you could throw in a role player or two like balkman and the Atkins or hunter exemptions, or take camby and another low salary guy for both exemptions. We'd be taking on roughly half a year of camby's salary, which would get them under the salary cap, so they could get the luxury tax payment like the nuggets did last year. If the Clippers aren't competitive, it might make sense for both teams.

I spend a lot of time over at MHR, but haven’t even thought to look for the SBnation Nuggets blogsite, glad I found it!
Anyways, I don’t think going after Camby is the answer… Especially considering the way he felt slighted after we let him go. Isn’t his contract still huge? However, it is possible that Camby desires to get off the Clippers dream-team (who wouldn’t?) and would love to come back to a contender where he still knows most of the guys…
Also, KMart and Nene are already getting paid big, and we just resigned Birdman to a pretty good amount… I don’t know our cap situation, but could we afford Camby?
For the on-court dynamic, I always loved what Camby brought as a weak-side shot blocker. But, look at what the Nuggets need a big man for in the playoffs: We need a big man who can defend bigs 1 on 1 and also patrol the lane. Camby is an average 1 on 1 defender. We already have a guy who provides what Camby does on defense in Birdman. And offensively, I never liked what Camby brought to the table. He was (to everyone’s chagrin) a ball-stopping jump shooter, and he wasn’t very good at it. The team has good chemistry right now, I wouldn’t bring in a former disgruntled player and run the risk of ruining it: it only takes one.
That said, I don’t think anyone we could get our hands on and also be affordable provides an upgrade to our current big men. Barring a major trade, we’re just going to have to figure out a way to overcome with what we have.

Caby's cost
Camby is making a bunch, but if we wait until mid-season, his cost is reduced in half. His contract expires at the end of this year, so any trade is a half season rental.
Forgot how irritated he was when they traded him, that could be a factor. I also agree there are other players I’d rather have, just trying to find an upgrade that the other team might actually want to move…
I commented on another thread on someones idea to make a trade for Marc Gasol with the Grizzlies. That would be a trade I would love to see. Young, tought, smart, skilled… and didn’t the Grizzlies just draft Thabeet?
Maybe that’s an option.
I think Gasol is the dream trade, but I just don’t see it happening. Thabeet doesn’t look ready for prime time and Gasol is the only other center on their team. Maybe if Thabeet steps up, you could do a birdman plus picks for Gasol.
True.
I am probably underselling Gasol’s value to that franchise. It might take a lot to get him, and I wouldn’t like to give up any of our key players for him.
I talked with Chip Crain of 3 Shades of Blue (Grizzlies blog) over the summer about a Gasol to Denver deal..

Awesome! Thanks for the link Nate.
I, like you in the end of your post, only thought the trade had a possibility of happening because of good ol’ Wallace and his less than stellar history as GM. But Chip seems to think it will never happen, and he is probably right.
However, I have to disagree with him on his perception that Gasol wouldn’t fit well with the team… Offensively, we are searching for a player who can score in the post and wrestle for offensive boards. Along with his good shooting range, he looks like a heck of a fit to the Nuggets to me. Defensively, he is big enough to bother good scoring big men (AKA his brother). I don’t think his lack of speed down the court is an issue in transition, we’ve got 4 other guys who can do that, and it is usually our smalls and wing players who get out and run anyways.
I would absolutely make that deal as he proposed it, even with our top draft pick for next year thrown in (or did we trade that away already?). I think Gasol or a player like him is the piece we need to add to be able to really compete with the elite teams with large frontcourts.
Oh, and thanks for the welcome you left me in the other thread ;)
Agreed
Marc Gasol has also slimmed up for this season and I can easily see him on this team. I hate to say this but if we were able to trade for Marc Gasol and we’d have to give up Nene I’d would be ok with that…
Stop the Gasol talk.
Love Marc Gasol. But no way Memphis plays the crazy fool twice.

i like it but there is just one thing
Camby is not 7 foot first off, and the nuggets biggets TPE exipered today, and you can’t use 2 tpeies to get a player.
My understanding is that you can’t use a single TPE on a single player, but you can use two TPE’s on multiple players. So Balkman plus the two TPE’s for Camby and a guy at the minimum could work, I think. I’m not sure if the TPE’s prorate like the player contracts do – Camby is making 9 million, so if we trade at midseason, we only need to get to 4.5 or so.
no u have it backwards
TPEs can only b traded straight up for a player…. u cant combine them with players or other TPEs…. but i think u could trade one TPE for two or more players
TPE
You can use 1 TPE for one player with a matching or lower salary. You can’t combine players from either side or TPEs or picks. What you can do is make a 2nd minor trade so you could trade a pick for future considersations if the team wanted something in return for the player they are dumping for the TPE.

Camby isn't the solution
And aLuffabo covered the reasons why perfectly. As much as I loved his ability to block his defense was porous and his three point attempts were easily more cringe-worthy than anything Kenyon has ever put up. He might be worth picking up if we can finagle Malik Allen or other similarly low risk pieces (Balkman has much more upside than Camby) but can anyone see him doing anything to slow bigs like Duncan or Bynum down if we met up with them in the playoffs. We need to look towards worthwhile bigs later this season or the next.

I've always like Camry's front court mate, Kaman, as better fit for the Nuggs.
Big , post-player, good rebounder
