1979-80 nba adopted 3 point shot

david thompson scoring 78 points in a game and 32 points in a quarter is even more amazing when you consider there was no 3 point shot at the time. melo has been going old school this season by keeping his 3 point attempts to a minimum and getting to the free throw line often.

A phenom in every sense of the word

Those of us lucky enough to get to see David Thompson play know that – had he played longer and under better personal circumstances – he’d be right there in the “greastest ever to play” conversation… Great point! 78 points without a 3 point line is something pretty incredible…

Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.

Melo should be able to score more than 54 sometime in his career

But what a performance by Melo to score 50 last night. He is truly putting himself in the catagory of MVP right now. I really like how he, and the Nugs are playing.

melo will get higher in that list

he is capable of scoring 60+ or more..I remember only two of those 50 games performances as im to young to remember the others..i remember the iverson one like it was yesterday. and of course melo..because his was yesterday lol

i agree

i think melo could get over 73 if he was having a hot night, and it fit into the gameplan. Really when he is hot, there isnt anyone in the NBA who can guard him, and probally no 2 on 1 that could do it consistantly. The only thing that has ever limited melo is melo.

Ha ha

You said “gameplan”….that’s funny.

rauf rauf rauf is on fire

for all of the disagreements i have with some of the things he believes now, and some of his actions in the past, he was my first nuggets jersey, and as pure shooters go, there arent many if any better. Ah chris Jackson we hardly knew ya.

I guess Michael Adams isn't really a pure shooter

But he has to go up there somewhere. He put up 27 points and 10 assists for a sucktastic Nuggets squad one year ( I think it was like 1990 or something)

How wierd is it

That you could actually say that Melo’s 50 was kinda “quiet”? That is scary. He went to the line so much and his scoring was relatively balanced throughout the game that I was almost like “wait. What? When did he get 40?”
The fact that Billups gets 32, and JR hits some big shots late makes me smile because Melo drops 50 in an unselfish way…we’re not talking Kobe’s 81 where he shot the ball seemingly everytime down the court!
Side note: after Stans comment, it’s fun to look at this list and see how many you rememer seeing and mine is at 5…fan since 1985…
Also, EXTREMELY JEALOUS of those of you who got to see Thompson play….

When Thompson was a rookie I was at a preseason game. Well you know preseason games are more about who’s going to make the team than anything else. I was sitting way up high so that the players looked awfully small. On a missed shot by the other team a guy is way above everybody to get a rebound, so I’m thinking wow that guy must be 6’ 11" at least, maybe they should keep that guy. As they came up the floor I got my eyes focused on his number well enough to realize that it was Thompson, so I thought well yeah obviously they’re going to keep that guy. I was at other games where I had a lot better view.
Thompson could have been the predecessor to MJ if he headn’t got into some bad stuff. While Dr. J was the big push to merge the ABA and NBA, Thompson had to be the guy who put them over the top.

Ah, memories

Got to watch Thompson vs Gervin at old Big Mac. What a game that was.

Thompson did an awesome dunk and Gervin replied with his patented soft jumper. An entire game of stuff like that. Issel missles, Bobby Jones block and layup, Captain Midnight doing an awesome drive and short jumper over Jones.

Man what a game that was. If I remember right it was like 126-118. What a defensive battle LMAO :).

The ABA was really about having fun, a lot of that because they didn’t take themselves too seriously.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
