Arron Afflalo is an ELITE defender

Consider the recent evidence:

11/13/2009 - Kobe Bryant - 7/17, 4 turnovers, 19 points.  ZERO points in the second half.

11/17/2009 - Belinelli/Weems - 11/25, 3 turnovers, 28 points combined, +/- of -19.

11/21/2009 - John Salmons - 2/11, 1 turnover, 5 points in 28 minutes of play.

11/24/2009 - Chris Douglas-Roberts - 1/6, 3 turnovers, 5 fouls, 4 points in 30m of play.  Had averaged 27.3 in the previous 3 games

Afflalo also had 15 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal and block last night in the second rout of the Nets.

Afflalo has the length and the tenacity to bother ANY player and he hustles as hard as (if not harder) than Renaldo Balkman.  He fights over every screen, bulls through every pick, constantly hangs around the offensive basket, works to create his own shot and runs the break.

What more could you ask from your starting SG?  He knows he isn't a primary scoring option and is okay with that.  His stellar defense is amazing, and really a primary reason (in my opinion) why the Nuggets have been able to look so dominant in the first part of this season.  Put him on the other team's best SG/SF and he will just lock them down.

Say it with me now: Dahntay WHO?

Write respectfully of your SB Nation community and yourself.

I love AA’s game. Even against the Bulls the other night when he couldn’t hit any of his wide open jumpers, I still felt like he was playing a good game Another one of those players who takes pride in doing things that don’t always show up in the stat book. Thanks Wark and the gang nice pick up!

by CCH on Nov 25, 2009 11:10 AM MST reply actions

Wark should ask Dumars if we can get Austin Daye

Steve Hess will turn that guy into a Monster, and Adrian Dantley will show him how to get to the FT-line 30+ times a game.

Nice post Beefy, Rec'd.

I liked the stats, they don’t lie!

And I am loving AA, he’s the type of player you need to blend in with your stars/high scorers and win a championship. I liked this kid coming out of college, and couldn’t be more pumped that we picked him up.

by aLuffabo on Nov 25, 2009 2:57 PM MST reply actions

Thanks!

Yeah, I agree, he has turned into an incredible player for Denver. Even though I admittedly knew little about him, I had heard rumblings from Detroit that his game was definitely something to look at.

It is actually AAA

by BrianD on Nov 25, 2009 3:02 PM MST reply actions

sky is the limit

afflalo’s next move is to become a combo guard. playing next to billups in the starting line up will help develop his point guard skills. his career right now is going the way earl’s should have gone. lawson and smith are looking at their true competition.

Truly.

Though I don’t think Afflalo will ever be a PG, he’s much better suited to being a strong defensive SG. He does have good on the court vision but he’s better at making his own shot than creating for others.

chauncey clone

afflalo gets it. i thought before the season earl and ty were the future back court for denver. aa was projected to be d.jones lite. he is going to take full advantage of his chance. when billups first came into the nba he was labeled a shooting guard in a point guard body. aa will not be satisfied with the defensive stopper or shooting guard role. he seems determined to be the complete package.

I was so happy when they got rid of Jones, I always felt that even though he was cited as the defensive king of the Nuggets, his offense was just not existent. AA has the Dirty Dahntay Defense with a bonus of PPG :)

Bills fan? In Colorado? It's more likely than you think.

by UZ on Nov 25, 2009 4:16 PM MST reply actions

Dahnte is killin it though

averaging like 17 ppg this season with the Pacers. I still would rather have AA though.

by GoldenNugget on Nov 26, 2009 3:59 PM MST up reply actions

Dahntay

is the Pacers’ main priority besides Granger. He’s attempted 166 shots this season. He’s only at 46% shooting overall and 30% beyond the arc.
Afflalo is tied with the 6th most attempts during this season with Lawson, a PG, and the only person he’s ahead of that plays substantial minutes is Bird. Afflalo has taken exactly 100 attempts. He’s at 50% shooting and 42% beyond the arc.

I’d rather have Afflalo.

by higgyhoops12 on Nov 26, 2009 11:31 PM MST up reply actions

Dahntay is showing some skills that he never displayed in Denver

And it’s not because he didn’t get the ball-touches/PT. Seriously, he’s hitting jumpers that he almost never hit last year. With Troy “I am the crappiest defender you’ll ever see” Murphy back and bombing threes, Dahntay’s stats will go down.

Dahntay was, and still is, my favorite spelling of “Dante”

IF GK leads us to the NBA Finals, he definitely deserves a contract extension, but not too long of a one.

I also forgot to say that The Pacers have played 3 less games then the Nuggets.

by higgyhoops12 on Nov 26, 2009 11:32 PM MST up reply actions

Another thing to note.

AA plays very good defense without being in constant foul trouble like Dahntay always seemed to be.

yes

an important distinction

by skithebert on Nov 25, 2009 11:39 PM MST up reply actions

It's Arron btw

Hence the totally awesome nickname of ‘Spellcheck’.
But besides that, lmao, I agree wholeheartedly. Rec’d.

by Agaliarept on Nov 25, 2009 9:52 PM MST reply actions

Somewhat related...

I once read that Chauncey has an extra “e” in his name…but nobody is named Chauncy anymore, so it doesn’t matter. However, spellcheck does not recognize Chauncy but does recognize Chauncey. Spellcheck also does not recognize spellcheck…

I'm waiting to see

How Kobe reacts to AA in the next game. I’m pretty sure he’s all but certain that we’ll be putting AA on him, and I’m curious to see whether Kobe plays that normal, unselfish role, or tries to show the world that ‘there is no Kobe-stopper’. Tbh, i’m not sure how ready AA is for a Kobe that’s determined to knock him down, and i don’t think many of us here would doubt that Kobe can overwhelm anyone if he wants to. I’m more interested in how AA handles it. He could easily go “Dahntay” and start playing wild defense, getting into foul trouble. He’s young, he’ll learn, but it could possibly be a concern if we’re in WIN NOW mode.

Just a thought.

by Agaliarept on Nov 26, 2009 2:04 AM MST reply actions

Kobe will try to post him up a lot

He’s the biggest ball-hogging beansucker ever to play in the NBA. I don’t care that he’s been putting up decent assist numbers the past few seasons. He’ll revert back to his 2000 form and start chucking a billion shots, as he did when Ruben “I’m NOT a child molester” Patterson guarded him. BTW, AA is a better defender than Ruben.

Its not ironic, by the actual sense of the word, but...

What I find funny is that you say “Dahntay, Who?”, because he wasn’t relevant in the NBA until four games against the hornets with us in last years playoffs, and has now become relevant as a prominent player on a team that isn’t relevant.

by Missing Lynx on Nov 26, 2009 3:17 AM MST reply actions

That's a great post

For anyone who’s played basketball beyond little-league church games…ok, me, i mean….to be a DECENT defensive player is really fucking hard. What AA “the Duracell” is doing is downright ridiculous. You add the offense and you’ve got an anomoly. His work without the ball in offense and off the balk on D is incredible. Sometimes I get caught watching just him on defense. That’s the sign of a great player. The word “Creative” comes to mind watching him on the defensive end. I promise you, what he is doing will be probably the most important part of our reappearance deep into the playoffs. The guy doesn’t take ANY plays off.
There is something fascinating about a guy who LOVES playing defense ie Ray Lewis.
THE BEST PART? he’s only going to grow.

by SternfluffsKobe on Nov 26, 2009 4:10 AM MST via mobile reply actions

The question is

Will he grow with the Nuggets?
I agree that AA brings it every play and last night when he, melo, and jr were on the floor it was a decent rotation.
He’s getting paid the minimum now, will someone offer him more next season and snatch him right from under us?

by samdman on Nov 26, 2009 7:33 AM MST up reply actions

Yes

But I bet Denver will be willing to pay the tax if they can get to the finals this year

by Gasus on Nov 26, 2009 11:48 AM MST up reply actions

didn't we

just resign afflalo and balkman for extensions? or did we only extend balkman?

by higgyhoops12 on Nov 26, 2009 12:55 PM MST up reply actions

It was just Balkman who was extended

The Duracell’s contract option was picked up though. Gasus is right. If he continues this early-season success that will go a long way in getting him a long-term deal.
I think the Nuggs should sign him for a long contract anyway. We got a little lucky when we gambled that we could find someone to replace Dahntay. We can’t get into a “russian-roulette” at the SG position. JR is the most comfortable and best fits, at the moment, coming off the bench.

by SternfluffsKobe on Nov 26, 2009 1:57 PM MST up reply actions

Arron has another year on his deal beyond this one

Relax, we shouldn’t be thinking about contract extension until this season is over and we are the 2009-10 NBA Champions.

So that other AA-making battery companies wouldn’t get upset.

Arron Afflalo for 2010 Defensive Player of the Year?!?

Great Article

Afflalo is still very underrated on both ends of the court by non-Nuggets fans. BTW, his defense on Kobe and Chris Douglas-Roberts helped screw up my fantasy team…don’t even ask me why Kobe is on my fantasy team in the first place…

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
