Denver takes care of business (Nuggets/Nets recap)

Melo_vs_nets_medium
The Nuggets didn't have to expend a lot of energy against the Nets and that's a good thing as they'll be back to work tomorrow night in Minnesota. Arron Afflalo, Carmelo Anthony and Nene lead the way in a business style contest.

Star-divide

The Nuggets wasted little time in owning the energy of this game and dominated the scoring inside. Denver outscored the Nets 60-32 in the paint, but it felt like every Nuggets possession was resulting in a layup or dunk for a good stretch of time.

The Nets big man, Brook Lopez, found himself in very early foul trouble and that paved the way for Denver to exploit the undersized Nets time and again. No one player for the Nuggets totally jumped out at me in this one, but Afflalo and Nene were each impressive in certain aspects of the game. Double-A on the boards (8) and Nene getting easy buckets by being aggressive going to the rim.

This was just the type of game Denver needed. The players on both sides turned the second half into a up-and-down rec-league game. It was as if the teams were bored with the game at hand and just wanted to get things over with. Sort of like when you get in a pickup game and one of the teams is getting blown out, each side starts to take it easy a bit and before long somebody suggets, "let's switch up teams." But in the NBA you have to play with the squad you brought and that was unfortunate for Jersey.

Denver took care of the little things by out-rebounding the Nets 40-37, out-stealing the Nets 16-14 and out-assisting the Nets 27-18. It's no secret that I think Denver plays at its best when they are sharing the ball and working for the highest percentage shot ... they did that tonight. Nene and K-Mart combined for 9 steals and Denver was out and running for much of the game.

Joey Graham saw a little more time than usual by logging 12 minutes (mainly garbage time). I have been fairly surprised that Graham hasn't been used more. After hearing George Karl gush over Graham's abilities a little bit during the preseason I figured he'd get the bulk of Melo's backup minutes. The only problem is that Melo has been playing so well that he is not on the bench for any long period of time and when he is, Karl has found a rotation of going smaller with combinations of Billups, Ty Lawson and J.R. Smith/Arron Afflalo or Lawson, Smith and Afflalo.

Well, like the Nuggets I'm not going to waste a lot of energy on this recap. Denver earned a solid win against a team they were supposed to beat and the Nets were never allowed to gain any confidence that they could somehow win one on the road (or win at all).

Denver will move on to Minnesota tomorrow night, where they will again look to make a reality of a paper win.

aaron afflalo gets an A+

great game with shot selection, high field goal % AND REBOUNDING. it is easy to play sloppy and to the level of the competition when playing a bad team. outstanding stat line for 30 minutes of play.

1 win down. 4 more EASY wins to go.

The Warriors just beat the Mavs tho…with only SIX players!! Six players. Crazy. I think like 3 people played the whole game.

I'd like to know the record of very shorthanded teams ...

Denver lost to that shorthanded Bulls team last year … seems like they play pretty well. Backs against the wall type play with no subs.

I think refs tend to give short-handed teams the benefit of the doubt, which is another factor in short-handed teams success. The officials really don’t want it to come to 5 on 4 at the end of the game or anything like that.

That would be pretty fun to watch though (5 on 4), but good point.

I heard last night that no other team has won playing that few players

since like the 60s. I can’t remember exactly what year, but it was at least a few decades ago.

101 points is a lousy offensive performance from Denver

I want to say this: The Denver Nuggets only winning by 14 points at home to the New Jersey Nets is nothing to be happy about.

It is great that the starters got to sit in the fourth quarter, but the bench, supposedly one of the better ones in the league, caused all sorts of anxiety by letting the Nets cut the lead to 10 in the fourth quarter.

Even the box store doesn’t paint a pretty picture. Sure, Melo got his points and had a decent shooting night — I loved seeing him going to the hole all night, JR too was good at this. But Ty Lawson and Chris Andersen were underwhelming.

With the Nets turning the ball over 23 times you sort of expect that from a 0-14 team. So what do we make of the Nuggets’ 22 TOs?

One game after Chauncey gets out of his funk to get spur Denver to victory against a good but misfiring Bulls squad, he goes back to his typical (of late) self of being uninterested offensively. Though I do applaud the seven assists. Shame too for Kenyon, taking a lot of jumpers and turning the ball over.

Kudos to Afflalo. It was mentioned already, but he was doing all the right things last night: finishing on the break, knocking down open threes and pulling down rebounds.

A loss to any other time and I probably won’t be so critical. I know a W is a W. But if you turn it upside it sure looks like an M.

What's the deal with

leaving the starters in so long? Usually they stay in almost all of, or all of, the first and thrid quarters. Probably just anohter brilliant tactic by Karl, that none of us understand, or ever will.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: THE FUTURE OF THE NBPA
If the NBA owners opening proposal for the new collective bargaining agreement is any indication, we're heading for a lockout in 2011 and after that, smaller contracts, smaller salaries and less revenue shared with the players.

STIFF #2: THE CLIPPERS
After correctly kicking Mike Dunleavy upstairs and rightly installing Kim Hughes as head coach, why are rumors of Isiah Thomas joining the Clips circling around already?

STIFF #3: THE EASTERN CONFERENCE
Rumors of the re-birth of the Eastern Conference have been greatly exaggerated.  Yes, the Cavaliers are awesome but the sixth playoff seed might be sub-.500.  And do you think any of the West's top six teams fear the Celtics, Magic or Hawks?  No chance.

STIFF #4: ANKLE INJURIES
First Carmelo Anthony.  Then Chauncey Billups. And now possibly Arron Afflalo?  Tape those ankles up, dammit!

STIFF #5: NEW JERSEY NETS
4-46 and losers to the lowly Pistons on Saturday night.  But Lawrence Frank was the problem, right?
