The mystery of trade exceptions

So I was wondering if anyone has clear, CITEABLE, answers on trade exceptions.  Some people have claimed that they can't be used in conjunction with players, which if you have ever used the trade machine on espn you would know that is a totally bogus statement.  I can't figure out why sometimes it lets you use them and sometimes it doesn't.  I have seen the option of using an exception come up in player for player trades, multiple player trades and multiple team trades and at the same time have tried trades of each of these types where it won't let you use them. Just wondering if anyone knows the actual answers about how they work

Example

A three team trade which sends Renaldo Balkman and Alex Ajinca to Indiana, Roy Hibbert to Denver and Brandon Rush and Malik Allen to Charlotte would normally not work because it leaves Charlotte taking on too much salary. However if you use the Raja Bell exception it will work. The trade machine says you can use the exception on the trade. Damn why is this so confusing

its cuz technically its like a sepereate trade for that one player for the exception...

think of it like when we had walter sharpe…. he couldnt b traded w another player because it had been a week or so since we got him, but we could trade him cuz we traded him w the weems but it was like we traded weems for allen and sharpe for a minimum exception… idk if that helps

Try Larry Coon's page:

You can only use a trade exemption in the acquired player fit entirely under said exemption. You cannot combine trade exemptions / or with players to acquire a higher priced player.

1 for 1 swap

The size of the trade exception is the maximum salary of the player you get in return. So we are only looking at getting guys making under $4 mil with the exceptions we have.

You can’t combine them in a multi player trade. The Iverson Billups trade was actually set up as a series of 1 for 1 swap though, which used up the Camby exception and created a new exception for Iverson. That’s the big one that expired on Nov 4th.

STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. THE NUGGETS AT HOME
How is it possible that a Nuggets team with this much talent can be 7-5 at home?! Things have gotten so bad that fans are clamoring for J.R. Smith to return.

2. CARMELO ANTHONY
Kobe Bryant plays through any and all ailments. Melo uses any and ailments as an excuse not to play.

3. KEVIN LOVE
Just when the T'Wolves are looking better, Love stomps on Luis Scola and lands himself a two-game suspension.

4. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
The 'Cats have lost 11 straight and are now 3-21 ... in the Eastern Conference! This is what happens when you let an underwear salesman with a Hitler mustache run your team.

5. MIKE BROWN
Dr. Bunsen Honeydew (Google it!) got himself a one-game suspension for making contact with a referee.
