No doubt who won the rematch... (Nuggets/Bulls recap)
The refs didn't need to review anything tonight as the Nuggets, like a pride of lions, toyed with their prey before eventually tearing them apart in the second half by outscoring Chicago 63-41 and winning the game 112-93.
While I was watching the game tonight I kept thinking to myself ... who is our Jerome Williams? That is to say ... who is Denver's Junkyard Dog (Williams' nickname)? Who is the guy who is going to get scrappy, fight for rebounds and just generally wreak havoc while he's on the floor? Well, our answer last year was Chris Andersen ... the Birdman. Whenever he came into the game you knew you were going to see 110% effort and hustle from the Bird and he was going to be breaking his back to earn more minutes.
Thus far this season we hadn't seen the same Andersen, due to injury, but tonight the Birdman came back. Bird was blocking shots (3), grabbing rebounds (5), and busting his ass up and down the floor and earning some easy points along the way (9). When Nene, who had an excellent game, came off the floor the Bird didn't miss a beat and actually raised Denver's energy level.
The Nuggets energy at the outset of the contest could be found in the morgue, but once again in the second half it was as if it dawned on Nuggets, "wow, what should we do with these big sharp claws?" Well Denver decided to use them in the final two quarters to just tear the rabbit to pieces (whoa, a slight reference to Swingers?!?!). Suddenly the Bulls looked like they had just played in L.A. the night before and Denver once again looked like an elite team.
Carmelo Anthony chalked up his second double-double of the season and nearly had himself a triple-double with 30 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists. When Melo is in "assist-mode" he is unstoppable ... his court vision is on par with some of the top points guards in the league when he wants it to be and when he trusts in his ability it's fun to sit back and watch the man play.
Chauncey Billups had a fine night shooting the ball and had an interesting postgame quote on Altitude TV saying Denver's "pride kicked in" in the second half and that helped the Nuggets earn the win. Billups connected on 5-9 shots (3-5 from deep) and scored 21 big points.
Denver's bench stood out once again, as it should with the talent it possesses and outscored Chicago's 43-19 ... wow! J.R. Smith capped off the night when Melo fired a pass to him from just below his own free throw line, to a streaking Smith who was just inside the Bull's three point line, where Smith then took his two steps and threw down a two-handed highly exaggerated double clutch dunk. The crowd errupted and J.R. blew a couple kisses to his audience (97-81 at that point.)
The Nuggets earn a season series sweep over the Bulls and got back to their winning ways ... thanks to Andersen getting back to being the Bird.

denver has not played a complete game all season
bad start tonight or allow the other team back into the game after having the lead like last night. nugs play 48 minutes of all out hustle at both ends they will be a scary team. being a junkyard dog is an equal opportunity proposition. patients and self discipline to open the game will go a long way from digging themselves a hole. denver is their own worst enemy. they need to play smarter AND harder. everything else will take care of itself after that.

I’m having trouble seeing how patients will help them. I would think healthy people would be more helpful.

Hahaha, binggg...
But seriously nohoops… chill out a bit, if the guys play all out, all the time, for an 82 game season, we’d have about 3 players capable of walking on the court come playoff time.

Based on Carmelo's dominance as a passer at certain points in his career...
I have to believe that it is matchup based. I couldn’t pick out what gave him a clear vision of the court tonight, but he seems to have gained such a mental edge that I can’t believe he falls back into the mode of “I’m gonna get my points”. He forced his shot so much earlier in his career, and he’s had so much success and so many compliments paid to him when he does distribute the ball that I have to believe he is capable of creating assists SOLELY because of the gameplan.
This isn’t to say he can’t do this all the time— I’m just suggesting that he might not being put in a position to contribute this way in a considerable amount of games.

showboating
Smith got a little carried away launching 3’s and dunking, but it was certainly fun to watch, especially after his awful game in Los Angeles.

no kidding
Smith thinks it’s so miraculous every time he scores. That’s what you’re hired to do, buddy. Just make the shot and carry on.

Was at the game
I don’t know how it showed on TV, but you could tell in the third and fourth when Earl was wanting the ball, and more importantly, the second he released his shots, when it was going in. I’ve never seen a player that you could almost see a visible aura around him when he was in the moment.
Don’t really care if we play complete games at this point. All I care about is that we play part of a game the way we can. That seems to be all we need at this point to pull out W’s.

Lawson is ballin'
The Nuggets still aren’t playing very good defense this year nor are they consistent. I still believe they will win a lot of games at home simply because those momentum runs can cover up bad stretches of play. It’s good to see the Nuggets blocking some shot sand outrebounding an opponent but I’m not convinced they can do this on the road. The one constant this year is Lawson who continues to lead the Nugs on huge scoring runs when he comes in. A +24 tonight, I don;t have the stats handy but I’m pretty sure he has to be leading the team in +/-

During the Clippers game Marlowe siad that the guy who leads the league in +/- coming off the bench is Birdman.

I ‘m betting he’s really pissed off at GK

I dunno, I think AC has been pretty mature about things and I think he knows that he’s lucky to get whatever he’s gotten. I don’t think he blames GK for the emergence of Lawson; I just don’t think that’s the kind of guy he is.

Home/Road
Nugs are now 5-0 at home, 4-4 on the road.
Er, maybe they can get a 60-win season (and thereby compete for the #1 seed) by winning 40 home games & 20 road games?
by ParkHillNative on Nov 22, 2009 2:09 AM MST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah it's..... not great
2 of the road wins were against bad teams, and the other 2 were last second wins – Oden missed free throws in the POR game and Brad Miller’s fingernail in the CHI game. The road schedule will get more challenging, even in the wins the Nugs aren’t playing very good. Uninspiring to say the least, but it’s too early to draw conclusions just yet.

It's interesting
When we win, no one talks about the need for or lack of a big man. I’ve been seeing it in almost every game. When the nuggets HUSTLE they are unstoppable.
It worries me that IF the nuggets get their true seven-footer we might see a little too much reliance on “oh, we got a guy who can cover the paint, we got this one”….
Although the early season schedule gas been ridiculous and fatigue certainly plays a part in some games, I honestly think this team, pound for pound, position to position, is arguably the most talented teams in the NBA.
We seem to play some games on paper though, and not on the court. But we have to start treating every team on any given night like an elite team! We don’t wanna be in April going, “GEEZ! if only we had beaten the Bucks and Clippers we’d be the number 2 seed!”
Great second half tonite! I guess that’s why there are 4 quarters in a game…

are mistaken. I sir, did state the fact that we needed a big last night .

Sorry, missed that.
I’m actually interested though. Do you think that a big (whoever it is) wouldve helped us win by more or…?
Seriously, i don’t want this to sound like an argument, but I’m actually interested in your thoughts and ruminations on this. Cause I actually think we could be 12-1 (Atlanta gets the out-and-out win) if we just played the hustle card in our early games…
I’m not seeing the difference that a “legit 7-footer” would have made to this point.
Again, I’m really interested in your thoughts.
Go nuggets!
by SternfluffsKobe on Nov 23, 2009 1:11 AM MST via mobile up reply actions 0 recs
I actually think
the Hawks are the only team that outplayed us start to finish. The Nugs competed in the rest of the losses and hurt themselves more than their opponents did. The Miami game was the worst thing I have watched in a while and it’s not even worth discussing how badly that game was thrown. The Bucks and Clippers losses were well within reach had it not been for some selfish play and failure to make adjustments losing the lead. Another big would help us match up better with other championship caliber teams, but Denver can beat anyone with their best foot forward and 100% healthy. Even in last years WCF the Nugs matched the Lakers blow for blow for 5 and a half games despite their size advantage. We were doing well against Bynum, Gasol and what really killed us was Trevor Ariza and Lamar Odom coming alive in the last 2 games. That and the over doubling of Pau Gasol. Another role playing big would give the Nugs a cushion against wear and tear on Nene/Bird/K-Mart without any of which they will be in a lot of trouble. Right now I would say this team is playing about the same level as last year despite the fact I think they are much better.
by runningdonut on Nov 23, 2009 1:37 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Thanks, thats
A great way to put it. I hadn’t thought of it that way, I guess. The Nuggets seem to play games on paper sometimes orcwait for the other team to “give up”. At least that’s how I percieve it.
I thought everyone was saying that we need a starting big man, which I think would fuck up the chemistry of what the best part of this team has going for it, you know?
I think your 100% right though. Someone off the bench to displace the wear and tear would, I guess, be great.
by SternfluffsKobe on Nov 23, 2009 4:53 AM MST via mobile up reply actions 0 recs
I too agree that
the wear and tear on the front court is going to catch up with us the closer we get to the end of the season. But in addition to this I think that if we had a legit Center it would give the Nuggets another deminsion in that Nene could play the power forward and all four could get a breather now and then.
This is all depending on who we obtained and weather or not our terrific coach would play him. That being said I think the coach should throw Petro in at times to give these guys a rest

hate to rain on this parade
but it just seems like theres a piece of the puzzle to this team still missing, is it a true 7 footer? better rebounding? faster starts? shot selection?. i just really cant figure it out. one night we play great against good/great and decent teams and then the next night we get our asses kick by bad teams, what the hell is it ? sorry to be negitive but these are the facts dont get me wrong we have a great team some of the most talented guys i have seen one one team. i want to see that gold ball in denver dammit and shut the laker fans up for a change. well its just the start of the season so i should just relax and stop taking it so seriouslly for now GO NUGGETS,

the most frustrating sports team i have ever watched
I guess this leads to the question:
what is “nuggets basketball?” as in the question, are they going to play “nuggets basketball?”
is winning the way they did against the lakers nuggets basketball? is losing the way they did against the clippers nuggets basketball. at this point my answer would be -
yes.
this is a team with an identity that goes to both ends of the spectrum. from lackadaisical who cares defense to locked down frightening defense. (there is no need to comment on their offense.)
i turned off the tv in the third quarter of the clippers game. i couldn’t bear to watch the rest of the game. if the nuggets gave 100% in ever game – i wouldn’t care. but that wouldn’t be -
nuggets basketball…

Good to See CB1 and Bird Back
For the first game in several games, CB1 and Bird appeared to be playing much like they did last year. Both are dealing with tendinitis in their knees, and this upcoming streach at home may give them a chance to get back to full health. I get the feeling the China trip wore CB1, Bird and AC down a bit, as all 3 30 something players have been dealing with nagging injuries. The Nuggs are at their best when Chaucey is hitting 3’s, Bird is blocking shots and Smitty is going off….
BTW – - Nene is slowly becoming unstoppable in the paint. When he make his move quickly to the rim, there are few players that can guard him. Once teams strart doubling him, it will open up a lot of open 3’s. Good step forward this game.
