Carter vs. Lawson, Part 3
Carter was probably better in this game, however you dissect it. Sure, his defensive effort was pretty crappy, but
he made his shots and only turned the ball over once in 19 minutes, which is an extraordinary feat for him. Ty Lawson started great, but in the third quarter, had some of his shots blocked by the Grizzlies bigs like Hasheem "The Rookie Human Telephone Pole" Thabeet. He played 21:38. The stats are below:

However, even though AC probably played better, it's worth noting that he took two three-pointers and made them both. He's a career 25% 3-point shooter, and his average over the past three years is about that, meaning that the chance of him making two of two three-pointers is very low. One mediocre game by Lawson doesn't mean his minutes should be cut; everyone has mediocre games once in a while...

Plus-Minus
Lawson +7
Carter -2
Carter was the only player on the team in the minus except Allen, who played 6 seconds and was also minus 2. I was happily stunned when Carter made his first three and nearly fell out of my chair when he made the second. I really hope Carter gets glued to the bench game 8 and beyond.
A big +1.
It’s fairly evident to me that Lawson brings much more tempo and adds more pressure to the defense when he is in the game. Lawson makes things happen when he is in the game, I cannot believe this kid fell to 18. What a steal!
That said, I also agree with NoHoops4u in that AC brings something to the table. He doesn’t look too great doing it, but he doesn’t hurt the offense (ie keeps it flowing) and bugs whoever he is guarding on defense. Good role player.
I think we will see Lawsons minutes improve and AC’s drop as the season progresses and GK starts to trust Lawson more and more… Also, it remains to be seen how JR’s return will affect the minutes for both. I see it reducing the time of AC more, Lawson is just too dynamic to keep off the court for too long.
denver starts the season 3 wins and 0 losses
too bad it has come down to lawson vs. ac. they both play on the same team, are dedicated to winning and bring a unique set of skills to the team. it is a huge relief to me knowing that if anything should happen to ac lawson and billups are waiting in the wings.
pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow
Rethinking the guard rotation
AC is a good player with a great attitude. I can see why Coach Karl likes him so much.
But… I think Lawson could be a great player and a perfect spark off the bench. Imagine him playing a fast style with Chris Andersen and JR Smith (I want JR to come off the bench).
And I would like to see a defensive banger start in the two spot. AC is OK, but I miss Dahntay Jones’ smash -em up style. I think AC is just a little slow and short to be guarding the other team’s scoring guard.
Where does this leave AC? I hope he gets his minutes by cutting in Chauncey’s time. Billups is amazing, but I don’t think I am alone in wanting the man to get some rest to be fresh for the playoffs. I’d love to see Billups sit the occasional game. He deserves it.
