Intriguing trade theory
Hm.
Think about it, if we make any move at all, i'm willing to bet it won't be earth-shattering. So, if all we're going to do is swap minimum contract players to acquire a 7-footer or something, it would be best to do it early, no? If we're just talking a Graham or AC trade or something, I propose we do it now, and still have the option to change it up again when the deadline comes around.
And of course, if it ends up being something bigger, that can wait, but it's all speculation for us fans anyway.

2 parts of the deal
first part is who does denver give up. joey graham stays although his contract is not guaranteed until january. allen and carter both have guaranteed deals @ 1.3 million but are for this year only. balkman has 2.2 million and petro is 880k. that is a total of 5 players from the low end of the bench out of a roster of 13 players. the second part is what team would want them and why? petro to the bulls for aaron gray is a possibility. gray is the odd man out with chicago because tyrus thomas has been demoted. bulls did not extend thomas and taj gibson has stepped up in his place in the starting line up. chicago can get 2nd round draft picks and cut petro. gray played at pitt for jamie dixon in the big east. denver gets a 7 footer weighing 270 lbs., that is fundamentally sound, has a basketball iq and is physical. between steve hess training him at altitude and hall of famer adrian dantley working on his game denver could have a back up center that can rebound and defend for the second half of the season. gray is not a quick fix or a long term project but someplace in between. if he does not work out denver has the option of bringing back petro or getting out big bertha at the trade dead line. waiting for the trade deadline effectively cuts the hit to the salary cap tax in half.

Good points
But i wasn’t under the impression that Joey Graham was untouchable. He hasn’t exactly gotton consistent minutes, or even rotation minutes for that matter.
Also, you’ve just pointed out one of the legitimate problems, not many teams would want the players we have available to trade. The ones we have obviously available to us, like Gray who you mentioned, should basically just be D-League players or FAs. I could replace Gray with a bunch of names, it’s just really a matter of who is available as there isn’t that significant of a difference in talent.
Q:
Would they bite on trading an undersized big man like Maxiell for a couple of 6’11/7-footers with expiring/minimum deals just for the depth?
Dan Feldman (PistonPowered/TrueHoop Network):
Who’s going to take the four years and $20 million left on Maxiell’s contract and give up an expiring contract of a bigger (read: more valuable) player?

Q:
Who do you think is the Pistons’ most valuable bargaining chip that they’d be willing to part with?
Dan Feldman (PistonPowered/TrueHoop Network):
Charles, I think Dumars would be willing to part with anyone who wasn’t brought in this year and who isn’t Rodney Stuckey.
Possibility?
holy cow
Maxiell would a nice addition!
and he has experience dealing with the Lakers

I Think
Graham is able to be traded on December 15th, not January.
I like Gray, just don’t see Karl using him. But I would take Gray over Petro. Why would Chicago though? To gain a 2nd rounder would be my only reason why they would.

graham
his contract becomes GUARANTEED in january. denver will want to keep him because his contract is under a million and he can play the 2,3 or 4 position. chicago wants to stay under the tax this year. gray is paid over a million and petro is less then a million. gray’s deal is guaranteed and petro becomes guaranteed in january because of thomas’ situation what is the point of keeping gray? he has not played this year and 2nd round picks do not count for this years salary cap and could be used in a future deal. denver got jr smith from chicago for two second round picks and howard eisley. their head coach is vinny delnegro. nugs getting gray is not really a long shot considering past history. karl does not have to play gray very much. insurance if a big gets hurt, spot duty on a 2nd game of a back to back and 6 fouls. just in case.
