Analyzing Ty Lawson's future in Denver.
After a period of absence from this blog, I come back.
Some of you might remember me, some of you might not (maybe Nate and Andrew will).
Well, I am going to try to preview Ty's future in this franchise, which is full of wishful thinking and certainly promising.
via www.nba.com
Ty aims to be the Denver Nuggets' point-guard of the future, making Chauncey Billups' retirement probably easier to forget than expected. But he is a different PG than Billups. While Billups is a pass first PG (at least that is what he is supposed to be), I see Ty more of an scorer PG, he is lightning fast and if he can improve his J to create better chances of scoring off the dribble, he can be a 25 ppg kind of PG. Denver can be a TERRIFIC team on transition and fastbreaks in the following years, with Ty, J.R, Melo, and Nene. I know we are already a fast pace kind of team, but with the addition of Ty into the lineup (removing an older and slower CB1) we can set a new era in NBA basketball.
Billups said the window to the championship might close after this year for our Nuggets, but I do believe that we can be a better team in a couple of years, and I think everything is on Ty's hands.
Future really looks promising in the Mile High City, don't you think?

Yes, definitely
But I disagree that Ty Lawson is not a pass first PG. Ty Lawson, probably more than any rookie (save Derrick Rose) that I’ve watched the past few years, understands how to run an offense. He knows when to take the transition J, and where and how hard to fire in bullet passes. He will never have the post up game that Chauncey will, but he won’t need it. I see Ty Lawson developing into a CP3/Steve Nash-alike.
He’s short, but explosive, great sense for where his teammates will be, and can hit the 3. He spaces the floor and can penetrate on all but the quickest opposing guards. I would say that Lawson’s season numbers will look more like 15ppg/6apg/2spg.
He is not a volume scorer, but he will get his points, and he knows how to set his teammates up. Go Lawson.

I agree.
I think we have pretty much the same point. You know, by saying he is not a pass first PG, I don’t mean that he doesn’t know how to run the offense, of course he does, I just don’t think he is an Andre Miller, you know what I mean by that?
Sorry for the misunderstanding!

Lawson
Is like the Maurice Jones-Drew of Basketball. He’s so low to the ground and so explosiv it’s crazy. He’d make a great running back in the NFL, especially with that speed. But I like your comparison of CP3/Nash, but I’d say He has speed ike CP3, a shot like Nash and the power and ability to drive like D-Will. Not bad to have the same attributes as those guys. Lawson’s the real deal. Loved him at NC and love him even more now.

I hope you guys aren't saying that the Nugs will be better with Ty than with Billups
Look what happened in Detroit when everyone said they’d be better off with their young pg. Give me a break guys, Ty Lawson is awesome so far but he has a long way to go before he can be an improvement, yet alone equal, to Billups.

Will Bynum should be starting over Rodney STuckey
WB is like Ty Lawson…kinda. He (WB) doesn’t have as good of a jumper yet.

It's not that right now.
But I think we will be better with him IN THE FUTURE than we are right now

Really?
Like I said, Lawson has a long way to go before he is in the same league as Billups. To say that he will be better in the future than Billups is now is a huge statement and you should take more than a 10 game sampling before you make it.

My favorite comp is Terrell Brandon . . .
Ironically, one of the guys who worked with Billups when he was finding his PG niche. Billups credits Terrell with teaching him how to become a pro in MN.
Lawson is quicker than Brandon, but has a similiar build and simliar skills set as far as court awareness, passing, and scoring. Lawson is clearly working on extending his shooting range (a knock on him last year) and so far the results are promising.
If this worked out to be a Mark Price / Terrell Brandon passing of the torch situation, I would be thrilled. Provided Lawson doesn’t blow his ankles / knees out like Brandon did. I do think Lawson will come of age a little earlier than Brandon.
From the what it’s worth dept, Brandon’s PER topped out at 25 and he was on the cover of SI as the best PG of the future one year.

I'll be fine with Lawson becoming Terrell
TB was a fantastic team player.

nate robinson
is a very talented side show in the nba. it took chauncey six years and 5 teams to learn how to become a distributor and facilitator from the point guard position. lawson is lucky he will not have to travel the same path billups did. he can have the best of both worlds. there are three types of point guards. the shoot first pass second like gilbert arenas. the pass first shoot second like chris paul. then there is the hybrid that can do both like deron williams. playing point guard in a half court offense is easier said then done. deron williams struggled his rookie year. he started half the games and was benched for several games by jerry sloan. the hard part for lawson is not getting carried away by his early success. one sign i have seen is when he takes a 3 point shot in the first half. the team needs to help him stay grounded and ty needs to establish restraint and self discipline. he calls himself the SHOW STOPPER. i hope he does not become the ty stopper.

The questions is
Can Ty become the leader Chauncey is?
by Zachm219 on Nov 17, 2009 3:58 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
Huge question
Some people obviously have no clue as to how hard it is to be the leader Billups is. That trait is more important than any in a point guard. There are very few “true leaders” in the NBA and Billups is definitely one of them.

Cool as Cucumber
The thing I like about Ty is that he is so poised and intelligent already on the court. Give him 2-3 more years and he will be a Top 5 PG in the League. I would like to see him be a little more agressive driving into the lane and either scoring or dishing, but that will come. I believe he can beat most players off the dribble and create numbers advantage as he slices to the hole. He also has a really decent shot. This kid is already good, and you can tell he is going to be a great one if he stays healthy and keeps working. I don’t know if I have seen many PG’s with his combination of smarts, speed and strength – - its going to be fun to watch him develop.
