Carter vs. Lawson, Part 2

This is a mini-feature that higgyhoops12 started, but since nobody has seemed to continue it, I will (as I don't feel like finishing the massive pile of homework on my desk).

I'll use stats from basketball-reference.com (the direct link is http://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/200910290POR.html), as that site is usually my first stop if I want to find some stats.

Anthony Carter got yet another start and played 22:56, while Lawson played 17:01.

Here is the stat-table that took me a lot longer to do than it should have:

As you can see, they ended up with similar stats, except AC got more rebounds, and (NOT SURPRISINGLY) also got more turnovers, 1-0, and fouls, 2-1. Anthony Carter didn't do as well from the field, and he should have done worse; the 20% three-point shooter actually made 1-2 on his three-point attempts, while Lawson kept to the high-percentage shots.

What we can get from this game is this: neither should have started against a large Blazers lineup, but Lawson should have at least gotten the same number of minutes as Anthony Carter, as he is a more efficient player. George Karl is still a bit uneasy with Lawson, though. Maybe he'll play Lawson more if Lawson shows up in his Tar-Heels jersey...Haha.

Update: Does anybody else think that Lawson is a bit like Jose Juan Barea?

look before you leap + rope a dope

it is a big advantage for ty to be on the bench at the beginning of the game and see how everything develops. he will know what needs to be done in advance instead of being in the game and trying to figure it out for himself on the fly. when ali- foreman had their classic boxing match ali used the rope a dope strategy. he let foreman hit him for several rounds while staying on the ropes. foreman tired himself out and ali finished him off. when lawson is on the bench in the first quarter the starters are out using up energy. in the fourth quarter when fatigue is setting in ty has just begun to warm up and can literally run away with the game. at the end of the utah game the nuggets were having a hard time keeping up with their own player. in the fourth quarter rudy fernandez was scoring on ty. when ac came in he prevented rudy from getting the ball in the first place. that is one difference between ac and ty. ac is a better defender AWAY from the ball and ty is a better ON ball defender UNLESS the player is taller and can shoot. i am sure ac will go over that with ty during the film sessions and practice.

It's a big advantage

to start a game and get in the flow than come in cold of the bench and have to match the game speed.

no good deed goes unpunished

chris THE EAGLE andersen comes off the bench. he never has a problem matching game speed and is never cold off the bench. things tend to heat up as soon as he walks up to the scorer’s table to report in. eagle andersen does not have to score a single point to have a positive impact on the game. some people think that all because he does not have 10 blocked shots in the first 2 games there is something wrong with him.

Anthony Carter

Needs to limit his turnovers. He’s improved slightly, but not enough.

strange Pole, you actually think anyone from this site will vote for AC? maybe someone will as a joke

by EviBina on Oct 31, 2009 9:38 AM MDT reply actions

It depends on the situation...

AC couldn’t guard Dwill to save his life the other night (there are few who can but AC was particularly bad what with the whole old and slow thing not going his way). Lawson was a complete liability against Fernandez when we played Portland. Fernandez was on fire, Ill give you that, but I couldn’t help but be reminded of when Sam Cassel said that playing against Earl Boykins is like “Shooting over a chair”. It was just too easy for Fernandez to shoot over Lawson.

I’m not trying to say AC is a better defender than lawson, or even that Lawson is better than AC… just that they match up better against certain players.

I still like AC, but there is no doubt that Lawson is a legit NBA player, and it is pretty clear that on most nights Lawson should be getting more minutes than AC

do not agree with the decision but i understand the logic

afflalo or graham starting at shooting guard would be the choice i have made. i can also see the logic of karl in going with ac to start. graham and afflalo have been in the nba 3 and 2 years. they both played in the eastern conference and played against utah and portland only twice each year. ac has been with the nuggets and playing in the division as long as afflalo and graham have been in the nba. going against utah and portland 4 times a year, knowing how to run the half court offense and playing in the nba twice as long as afflalo and graham give the edge to ac. there was an article in the post and ac was asked about starting. he said he did not care if he starts or comes off the bench as long as denver wins.

I would rather see AC starting than Lawson.

Why? Because that means that Lawson will get minutes to spell Chauncey at the 1. If Lawson starts, that means that AC has to come in. Chauncey can’t play 46 minutes a night like he did against Portland. When JR comes back, AC should be coming off the bench.

But the debate isn’t who should start, but who should get more minutes.

What do they each bring to the table?
First, let’s talk about what they have in common:
They each are good perimeter defenders because of their quickness. That same quickness they bring to the offense, both with a willingness to push the ball and tempo. They are both inexpensive as a PG back-ups.
Both are shorter than the average PG. Neither one is a great shooter (so far for Lawson, throughout his career for AC).

But where do they differ?
AC is a better off-ball defender, a tireless worker who will smother his opponent to keep him from ever touching the ball. That way his lack of height is negated because the opponent can’t shoot over him if they don’t have the ball. AC, usually, is aware of his deficiencies and will only shoot the ball when the shot-clock is running down or the rare drive to the basket. He’s shown that on occasion he can be a smart offensive rebounder and can get to long rebounds on the defensive end. He’s got a great lob pass downcourt.
Lawson is one of the fastest guys on the court and can really push the tempo, creating a mismatch for opponents. He’s a decent on-ball defender as long as the opposing player isn’t that much taller than him. He’s got quick hands, he had a great strip of Oden in Thursday night’s game. He’s much faster than AC and gets to the rim much quicker.

Pasted like this, it’s close, but I would rather see AC get minutes — but there is one last comparison that tips the scales way, way, WAY in Lawson’s favor.

What’s that? Put it this way… if AC and Lawson were to perform at nearly the same level all year long, who would benefit more from the minutes? Lawson, of course, because he’s in his first year, rather than AC who is nearing his last.

billup' minutes

if ac and lawson were to perform at nearly the same level all year long, who would benefit more from the minutes? billups would because he could play less minutes in the regular season. this is a win-win for the whole team. keep the milage low on chauncey during the regular season and save his best efforts for the playoffs. there are plenty of minutes for everybody.

My bias towards Lawson may be a bit too evident

But whatever. I’ll continue this for at least another 5 games or so.

The end justifys the means

that being said AC should never ever be in the game unless we are up by 20 points with two minutes left.
When Chauncey goes to rest and you bring in AC you get no points from the pg position.
If we are leading the opposing team begins to make their run in most cases they take the lead. With TY in the game he can get his shots if he can’t dish the ball.
Both are defense liabilities. However AC is way over rated.
At the end of the game I’d rather have TY Lawson because he gives us a better chance to have more points on the board than AC

by samdman on Nov 1, 2009 3:49 PM MST reply actions

AC is better defensively

Which keeping points off the board may in fact be more important.

by wangstu13 on Nov 2, 2009 3:16 PM MST reply actions

Um, AC is overrated on defense

Lawson is underrated.

Lawson>Carter at everything but rebounds. Not enough reason not to play Rook for 15-20+ minutes.

And please don’t tell me anything about rebounding being super-important. Just because Camby can get 12 rebounds and 3 blocks a night doesn’t mean he’s better than Melo, who gets about half that in both catagories but will burn you down if you think otherwise.

Excuse yourself

When the opposing team sees AC on the floor the pg goes straight for him. Either they run the pick and roll or most of the time they just shoot right over him.
He DOES NOT keep the other team from putting points on the board.
Denver is at a sever disadvantage when he’s on the court. No D ,No O and a shit load of turn overs.
Keep on living in denial wangstu 13

Agree samdman

AC not only is not that good defensively…but he is not guarded when he’s on offense so it makes it easier to double team or roam.

He’s not EXTREMELY horrible (unless he’s guarding Deron Williams), to his defense (and Ty’s too), GK puts him in crazy situations where he has to guard Brandon Roy and Rudy Fernandez. THAT part…is not is fault. Still tho, I like Ty’s backcourt pressure better (ie. in the utah game where he cause DWill to travel!)

STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. THE NUGGETS AT HOME
How is it possible that a Nuggets team with this much talent can be 7-5 at home?! Things have gotten so bad that fans are clamoring for J.R. Smith to return.

2. CARMELO ANTHONY
Kobe Bryant plays through any and all ailments. Melo uses any and ailments as an excuse not to play.

3. KEVIN LOVE
Just when the T'Wolves are looking better, Love stomps on Luis Scola and lands himself a two-game suspension.

4. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
The 'Cats have lost 11 straight and are now 3-21 ... in the Eastern Conference! This is what happens when you let an underwear salesman with a Hitler mustache run your team.

5. MIKE BROWN
Dr. Bunsen Honeydew (Google it!) got himself a one-game suspension for making contact with a referee.
