Can we ease up on George Karl a bit?
Listen.
Lately all I'm hearing from Nuggets nation is "Fire George Karl" this and "What the hell is Karl thinking" that. Karl no doubt has made questionable decisions in the past, and we've all seen his propensity to move more slowly with his decisions. So have many, many other NBA coaches.
Consider the facts:
- George Karl led the Nuggets to tie the franchise record high in wins last year at 54-28.
- Karl is the 12th all-time winningest coach in the NBA, with 933 wins.
- Under Karl and with Carmelo, the Nuggets have made the playoffs every year. They lost in the first round 5 years in a row, and finally broke through last year with a trip to the conference finals.
- With Chauncey joining the team, Karl's focus has been able to shift more to actual team management rather than being the team's leader. Carmelo is not a natural leader, and Chauncey has been instrumental in getting the team to tighten down and focus.
The results?
Last year, with a roster that most expected to do no better than eighth in the murderously tough Western Conference, the 2008-2009 Denver Nuggets were, per game:
* 1st in free throw attempts
* 2nd in free throws made
* 2nd in blocks
* 3rd in steals
* 5th in efficiency
Nene and Kenyon Martin were both near their career highs for games played. Andersen provided a huge defensive boost as a virtual Camby replacement. The team was, and is, a cohesive unit.
Sure, you can point to Chauncey's arrival as some miracle panacea that finally catalyzed the team into the contenders we'd hoped they'd be since Melo's drafting, but you cannot deny that Karl has played an instrumental role in turning this team from a perennial loser into a perennial playoff team.
I'm willing to give him a chance and see what he can do this season with the acquisition of Allen, Afflalo, Graham, and Lawson.
You should do the same.
Write respectfully of your SB Nation community and yourself.

All of the stuff you mentioned is true. Thought the bit about the playoffs is a bit misleading – they were in the playoffs before Karl arrived.
People give Karl a hard time because the visible things that you see a coach doing, he doesn’t do or doesn’t do well. When Billups arrived, he called a timeout in his first game because the team didn’t have a designed inbound play. He couldn’t believe it. Guess what, they still didn’t have one in the playoffs, and it cost them at the end of two games. After the first time it happened, they should have gone over it in practice. They didn’t and it happened again. Inexuseable.
Let’s see Karl install an actual offensive system, come up with a defense that doesn’t allow an opponent to dictate who guards their players, implement some inbounds plays, call timeout once in a while, work the refs, and look interested in the game rather than sit on the bench with a sour look on his face, then I’ll lay off Karl. Until then, he appears to be an obstacle to be overcome by the team, not an asset.

Way to go Karl Sucks
George Karl is a dinosaur who’s been around since JC was a Private.
When you have talented teams and you stay around longer than dust you will have a nice record.
He should have more wins if only he had a designed inbounds play.
Many of players have been subjected to George Karl’s ego and arrogance. I would say White was the latest to be underminded by George Karl.
What is it with him and his ignorance to play rookies? That mind set should be as obsolete as he is.
Those who get on their soap boxes and deny the obvious inadequacies of this inferior coach should get a clue and take note to Karl Sucks post.

I don’t LOVE karl, but there’s no one better to bring in. you want a rookie coach in Mark Jackson and expect the Nuggets to get back to the WCF? Ask Michael Curry how that went over in Detroit.
The only person I would even consider is Avery Johnson and he declined rather quickly

Stan
There’s a reason Stan isn’t willing to pay the luxury tax as he has done previously.
Has George Karl gotten his extension as of yet?
What is the number of years in George Karls plan to get us a ring?
Why is George so great? He isn’t! Look at the Rockies after Hurdle. Look at the Bronco’s

And
Michael Curry isn’t Mark Jackson.
by samdman on Oct 25, 2009 9:45 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah you're right, Michael Curry at least has coaching experience now.
I have no doubt that Mark Jackson will be a great coach in the L, but you don’t give him his first coaching stint on a team that’s contending

Exactly
It blows my mind that CO fans, after what has happened with the Broncos, Rockies and Avs especially, are opposing the firing of George Karl. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!

the nuggets have inbounds plays for all inbounds OTHER than the one underneath their own hoop. You can’t blame Karl for the thrown away passes in the two WCF games. He had plays for them, but they just weren’t executed properly. Chauncey called a timeout on the underneath their own basket inbounds play in that game against the Mavericks way back in November, not on the side inbounds play like the WCF games. Your argument is slightly misleading in that aspect.
Stop getting worked up over the outcome of something you can't control.

kiki's players vs. kroenke's coach
that was the problem when karl first came to denver. the team was being pulled in different directions. gk did not want to trade andre miller when they did the iverson deal. who else could they have traded for iverson…..maybe kmart? you are either a good coach or a bad coach. there is really no in between. karl would be the first to admit he is not the best coach in the nba. he is a good coach and no doubt in the upper half of the league. where he ranks does not matter. i think he is the best coach for denver. the denver coaching staff top to bottom is the best in the nba. a good indicator for a coach in any sport is when an assistant coach becomes a head coach. scott brooks with ok city and nate mcmillan with portland were assistants for karl. he is criticized for not working the officials. last season denver shot more free throws than any other team. jerry sloan of utah has been working the officials for over 40 years as a player and coach. last season utah shot the third most free throws in the league. it will be critical for the bench players to execute the half court offense. this has been a problem for years. the fight against the knicks that got melo and jr suspended started because coach isiah thomas felt denver was trying to run up the score. the fact was denver would lose a big lead and allow the other team back into the game. with 22 back to back games it will be important to get quality minutes from the bench. a good anology is time of possesion in football. if the subs can run the half court offense for 20+ seconds, make the extra pass and force the other team to exert themselves on defense denver will have a great season. karl’s offense is designed to get drives to the basket and to draw fouls. the players settle for jump shots early in the offense the team will struggle.

Karl is ok by me
George has done a good job, you could also make the argument he single handedly saved the season in his first year here. So unless Coach K has suddenly become tired of Duke (which he never will but IMO he is the best current coach roaming a basketball court, professional or college) Karl is the guy. I mean he’s been damn successful here. I feel like we have been spoiled this past half decade, I can still remember the coaching jobs of Hanzlik, Issel, Bickerstaff etc etc etc….ugh.

Glad you didn't mention Bzdelik
He won 17 more games than he should have. The management wanted to tank to get Lebron, but Bzdeliks team played hard every night. It’s just really hard to win games when the only decent scorer on your team is Juwan Howard. However, their defensive hard-working-ness, led by Ryan Bowen, James Posey, and the pre-drug Chris Andersen, allowed opposing teams only 92 or so ppg. If only they actually had more than one person who knew how to put the ball in the basket (84 ppg, really???), and if only Nikoloz Tskitishvili didn’t suck so much at everything, the team would be .500
The roster that Bzdelik was given wouldn’t even have won many games at the collegiate level.
Ugh, I hate typing Bzdelik over and over…

Well, the evidence for Ty's superiority to AC is glaring.
And to deny it is a mark of stubborn bullheaded stupidity. The test begins against Utah. Will Karl continue his favoritism to an undeserving underperformer? Karl is indeed greatly accomplished, and I actually want him to succeed wildly, but it’s these type of things that drive the fans nuts.

Which might be frustrating, considering the Nugs nabbed the possible #1 PG in the draft
by Missing Lynx on Oct 26, 2009 4:29 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Unless if you consider Tyreke as a PG, which he isn't
Same thing with Steph Curry. Maybe the Nuggets should make Fat Lever TyLaw’s player developer. They have very different bodies, but Law would learn a great deal about passing and rebounding from Lever, who I think is the best PG ever to play for the Nuggets (sorry, Billups).

possible ROY?
Griffin’s injury kind of opens things up. If Ty gets some time, he will have a shot. If he can dictate the momentum like he did in the last preseason game, holy cow, talk about impact player! I can’t wait to see if he can do this against regular season competition and the old refs, but I have a good feeling that he can and will, given the opportunity. Imagine the headaches he’ll give other teams.
And they say the Nugs made no big off season deals, hah!

I can see some consideration.
But I believe its gonna be Steph Curry. He’ll score alot on a bad team with a so-so shooting percentage and win like Kevin Durant did.

Tyreke will lead rookies in scoring
James Harden is better than all of you probably think. Hasheem Thabeet is the Next Maunte Boi.

Not Even
Bol was a beast in some defensive aspect of the game (primarily blocks), but Thatbeet is just not talented enough. Look no further for the game against Pitt when DeJuan Blair absolutely owned him. If DeJuan Blair did that what do you think Tim Duncan will do to him. I think Thabeet’s career in the NBA is already over before it even started.

Look at Karl's history since good seasons
Management was clever in not giving him an extension. Time for GK to maintain that success and bring a RING to Denver so that other people can respect the city as more than Broncotown.

Statistics
I would like to point out the fact that George Karl is the 12th most winning coach that hasn’t won squat.
Jay Cutler is a Pro-bowl quarterback with a losing record too.
Chauncey billups “coached” the team to the western conference finals last year….not Karl.

OMG, I think I just threw up in my mouth
I stand very, very biased on this subject so I am gonna cut to the chase. We, over at the old Denver Stiffs all were there for the same reason, we don’t feel George Karl is right for this job. At this point in time, the Nuggets are a championship caliber team. George Karl is a perennial choke artist when it comes to the post season. He can’t lead us to a title, he can’t even win us playoff games. His decisions last year in the WCFs cost us that series. It’s time that we refuse to settle for the mediocre, and start reaching for some bigger goals. We have the players, we have the management, but we dont’ have the coach. You have to be blind not to see that and you have to be blind not to see that George Karl is not the right coach for this team. He’s like a pedestrian trying to drive an F-1 race-car. We can’t afford to have a coach that is so blinded by his own ego that he makes decisions that hurt us. That is unacceptable at this level and it is exacerbated by the fact that we have such a good team at this point in time. Sure we have made it to the playoffs 5 or 6 consecutive years, but up till last season, each one of those trips to the playoffs was an utter disaster and it was all orchestrated by none other than George Karl. We lost to teams that were a lower seed than us, we had players admitting to quitting (IN THE PLAYOFFS!!!), we had games where we didn’t even look like we cared, and on and on. So you can think that Karl was the one who turned this franchise around but just know that you’re absolutely crazy. Melo and the Nugs front office turned this franchise around, not Karl. And if it weren’t for Chauncey’s arrival Karl’s ass would have been axed last year. I’m not trying to be an a*hole here but people need to realize that sometimes, when you’re on the verge of something good and there’s only one thing really holding you back, no matter what the history is, if that person is holding you back you need to rid yourself of them. Karl is the anchor to our ship’s freedom, and right now, I know there are a hell of a lot of Nuggets fans out there that would love to see the full potential of this team, without Karl.
