Look at how bad GK is looking already

Just think about how bad GK is looking

The coach has AC in front of Lawson in his rotation. AC has gotten so bad that he can’t hardly throw 5 passes per 10 that isn’t deflected or turned over. Lawson is a real stud and he seems NBA ready for sure. Guy can get to the bucket whenever he wants and he makes good decisions when he does.

The next issue that may kill the Nugs this year is GKs unwillingness to play Ronaldo Balkman. Balkman is very effective every time he steps foot on the floor. He could give the Nugs 20 minutes per night of very high intensity defense and serious offensive and defensive rebounding. He is probably worth 5 to 8 points in the plus minus category every night.

It looks to me that GK is gonna bash his head into a wall with the above mentioned issues as long as possible before he is either fired or the entire Pepsi Center croud screams at him for 4 or 5 strait games.

How is this rotation?:

Nene – Subbed by Bird
Kmart – Subbed by Balkman
Melo – Subbed by Balkman or Smith
Graham – Subbed by Smith or Afflalo
Billups – Subbed by Lawson

This is a 10 man rotation and is by far the Nugs best. With this rotation there isn’t a team in the league that I would say has a clear advantage at home or on the road against the Nugs.

Please god allow GK to swallow his pride and utilize the Nugs best rotations for the 2009-10 season. They might as well cut AC because he isn’t needed in any way and they can pay another minimum salary big. Anyone see how awful this guy is? It makes me really frustrated that all pre-season GK has had Balkman as his last man off the bench and yet he has been arguably their most effective sub. Please God please!

Please, stop this crap.

This is PRESEASON BASKETBALL.

Karl is still deciding on the rotations and Lawson’s play is obviously warranting a significant backup role. The guy has won ~932 games in his career and led the Nuggets to tie their franchise high in wins last year.

I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for at least the first few weeks of the season.

You should do the same.

Same thing as last year

You tell me why he hasn’t utilized Balkman all preseason. You tell me why he has AC ahead in the rotation this far. Good luck explaining that one and saying anything that makes any sort of sense clown.

22 back to backs

the point guard play will depend upon the situation. it is not a matter of ty vs. ac. can they combine to reduce chauncey’s minutes during the season? billups plays the first and third quarters for 24 minutes. that leaves another 24 to split between between ty and ac- THEORETICALLY. here is another concept- billups will lay the ball up instead of dunking it to conserve energy. when jr and cb were in games together last year smith would dribble the ball up the court. this allowed cb to stay in the game and conserve energy. there were times ac and cb were in together. ac handles the ball, cb is still in the game and he can conserve energy. with rookies you will never know how they will play UNTIL THEY PLAY. denver brought in 4 new players this season and that is why they play a preseason. the lakers are defending champs and they did not make many roster moves. melo played in 66 games last year. what happens to denver if chauncey plays 66 games? jr smith is one minor screw up from going back to jail. that is why they drafted ty AND brought back ac. with 22 back to back games MAYBE against the lottery teams billups can sit out those games. balkman-i like the way he plays and would want hin to play more minutes too. last season he had a problem with running the plays, was late to practice, shot 60% free throws, does not have an outside shot, weighs less than 220 lbs., and topped everything off with a dui over the summer. i do not know if he is lifting weights and working on his shot after practice. if other guys are working harder and putting in more time could that be a reason? is denver trying to trade him? last season balkman would not play then when melo and kmart did not play he started and denver won. what is going on behind the scenes with balkman is a mystery to me. i give him credit for staying positive and being ready to play. look at the broncos preseason and now they are 6 and 0. because of the economy the roster will have 13 players instead of 15 denver had last year. the coaching staff knows what they have with balkman and he played in the system last year. the 4 new players need the minutes to adapt and learn a new system. jr smith’s suspension, 2 less players on the roster, 4 new players and the 22 back to back games makes everything more complicated.

Well Frankly

Ty Lawson looks like a fucking badass!
I think we may have STOLEN one of the better players in the DRAFT!!!
for him to go @ 18 was RIDICULOUS! I think we’re gonna see him EXPLODE
and once that happens I see the NUGGETS being a higher caliber team than
either the Blazers or even the Jazz! I’m STOKED to see Lawson play more minutes,
and for our offense to launch into hyperspace!!!!!!! Not to mention he looks like he
can steal the ball as well as Iverson ever did.
29 points in a preseason game means nothing, but the way Billups and Melo were
watching him from the bench makes it seem like they could make some sweet plays
together!

by InboundingLobPass on Oct 24, 2009 4:05 AM MDT up reply actions

launch into hyper space

starts with defensive rebounding. denver will have more options than other teams in terms of different styles of play. it will be interesting a few years down the road to see which teams screwed themselves by taking a different player.

Don't be a troll

This blog is one of the few places on the internet where people come and share their opinions in a coherent and respectful way.

"He hasn't utilized Balkman all preseason"

Oct. 23 vs. LAL – 20

Oct. 20 vs. MIN – 18

Oct. 11 vs. IND – 7

His minutes have been INCREASING through the preseason. Get your facts straight before you call someone a clown, clown.

Also

In the 5 preseason games that he’s played in, Balkman has averaged 17.4 minutes per game behind Melo’s 24.6.

Billups has averaged 27 minutes, Carter has averaged 20.5, Lawson has averaged 17.6 mpg. That is a nice division of minutes between the PGs, and with Lawson’s play he will easily make up the 3.4 mpg that Carter has over him.

Finally -

Keep in mind that Balkman had a groin strain in the preseason, which is why his minutes have been down.

and another thing

ac knows the plays in the half court offensive sets. it is important to get afflalo, allen and graham minutes in game situations running the plays. denver lost their starting guard from last season (jones), the projected starting guard this season for the first 7 games (smith) and the combo forward off the bench (kleiza). the priority would be to have the new players that are replacing the players no longer with the team experience in the half court offense.

forget about lawson this year

just give it up. he has both karl’s hatred of rookies and his love affair with AC working against him. getting drafted by denver was the worst thing that could have happened to him.

Don't be down on Lawson's potential minutes ...

The guy is too good to keep off the floor … his time will come THIS SEASON.

Sigh

As much as I hate to say this, Lawson won’t get more than garbage time with the Nuggets unless Carter suffers a terrible injury. George Karl jizzes his pants every time Carter makes a decent pass, which is like twice a game, and uses those two decent passes to cancel out the about six turnovers and or defected passes he throws every night. When will he learn? I feel sorry for Lawson. So much talent and potential squandered because of a stubborn mule and his awkward mistress.

Stop getting worked up over the outcome of something you can't control.

I’m pretty sure it’s on every pass AC makes that GK has a massive orgasm. That would then explain why he never notices that half of them end up being TOs.

GK isn’t that stupid. Ty will have to prove himself in the minutes he gains and also in trainings. THEN, GK will have no choice but to say something. And i’m sure the press will be all over GK’s butt crack if Ty is seriously ballin’ but GK refuses to give him minutes.

by andoi_25 on Oct 24, 2009 10:48 PM MDT reply actions

Patience

I know you all want Lawson to have meaningful time right away, but he’s just a rookie. He needs time to develop at an NBA level. How many rookies come out each year and make meaningful impacts? Not that many. I don’t care how many points your score in the last game of the preseason, that’s like saying Brandstater should have been starting for the Broncos over Orton because he looked good in the preseason. Furthermore, why hamper Lawson’s development by putting him in too early and killing his confidence, especially when, contrary to popular belief, you have a fully serviceable veteran backup pg already. I admit GK puts AC in situations that don’t make a lot of sense sometimes (like inbounding the ball late in the 4th quarter against a guy who is over a foot taller) but Lawson isn’t exactly 6’6" either, and he’s got zero NBA experience. Stick with the vet, develop the rookie and don’t screw up what might have been a great steal.

by Zachm219 on Oct 25, 2009 2:45 AM MDT reply actions

True

I mean, AC isn’t all that bad. Aside from his uncanny jumper (which apparently he’s ‘worked on’ over the summer?) and his knack for turning the ball over, he knows how to push the ball quite well on this team. And he is a solid defender (when matched up on another PG) who forces turnovers and can get the odd steal. I admit, Lawson should eventually overtake him in the rotation, but i think Ty could learn a lot from AC in the mean time. Soon enough he’ll be playing AC’s role.

by andoi_25 on Oct 25, 2009 3:23 AM MDT reply actions

Thing is...

we know AC’s game. It isnt great. Its barely even good. Its ehhh…I mean cmon…nobody else offered him a contract in the offseason. If Ty Lawson plays horrible, he’ll pretty much look like AC. Garbage with some good things sprinkled in. Like was stated before however…Lawson is a ROOKIE! Which means he’s only gonna learn from those mistakes and get better! Why wait until later to get that knowlegde in. Chauncey isnt getting younger and depending on how long he plays is how long is should be until Ty is the starter.

Ty come from a high pedigree in basketball. Played with Kevin Durant and B-Easy in high school. North Carolina championship team in college. Dude is great….dude is gonna be great. He with if nothing else equal AC’s output but you know he is just gonna get better.

by GottaLoveMelo on Oct 25, 2009 10:28 AM MDT up reply actions

Mediocrity & Complacency

Some of these guys are stuck on stupid.
They would rather deny the fact that Ty on his worst day as a rookie is better than AC on his best day as a vet.
It would seem as though we all want the Nuggets to get better and win a championship ring. It’s a no brainer when it comes down to TY and AC.
The other weakness is the Coach. How many more years do we give GK to produce the Larry O’brien Trophy? He’s beyond his plan. History has shown that he doesn’t have what it takes in the post season. The window of opportunity was wide open last year and the lack of a game plan and arrogance cost us. Every one beefed up this year except for us.
There’s a reason why Stan isn’t going to pay the luxury tax as he did in the past.
GEORGE KARL can’t bring home the big one no matter what talent he has.
