Preseason Game Thread: Nuggets at Lakers (8:30pm MDT)

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers, Oct 23, 2009 8:30 PM MDT

The Nuggets wrap up the preseason tonight in a rematch with the Lakers. George Karl had this to say in the Denver Post today about last night's game: "I thought our defense was pretty first-class for most of the game," Karl said. "And I thought our offense stunk." The regulars should see reduced minutes tonight and Karl plans on playing J.R. Smith a lot (it'll be the last we see of Smith for a while.) The game will be in my second favorite city, San Diego, as the Nuggets wrap up their California Tour.

Hey, welcome to another season.

I saw a few “DJ Mbenga?” comments on last nights thread. Don’t feel bad, he lead the NBA in blocks per 48 minutes last season. I know it is hard to believe and of course he didn’t play much, but he is a blocking machine………he is also one of Mutombo’s best friends so………..not sure what that means, but it is notable.

http://www.nba.com/statistics/player/Blocks.jsp?league=00&season=22008&conf=OVERALL&position=0&splitType=9&qualified=N&yearsExp=-1&sortOrder=3&splitDD=All%20Teams

BTW, Nate, I just wanted you to know something. I know you are a Nuggets homer and I am a Laker fan douche’, but I think you do a great job here. Really good analysis, and fairly unbiased opinion. Great job, keep it up.

Hope to see you guys in WCF again.

Billy Mac: "Lamar, can you see yourself actually getting in the (boxing) ring"?
Lamar Odom: "No. My face is too pretty."

ha ha ... pslakerfan, I remember you from the WCFs on here. Thanks for the props.

Maybe a rematch?? Good luck on the season … not like you’ll need it.

AC starting

Clearly he has played great and is the only logical choice to start

Karl's comments about last night's game seemed spot on.

That said, Karl is an idiot.

Defense was pretty good, the offense was stagnant. No one was moving, Melo dribbled too much. They played okay defense in the first half, kept it close despite 17 turnovers. SEVENTEEN!!! IN THE FIRST HALF!!!

AC played like crap, as usual. It was especially poignant at one point where he came in and made a bad pass, turning the ball over. Then he gambled on a steal leading to an easy basket for LA. Then he turned the ball over again. All in about 30 seconds.

Lawson played like a rookie, but damn that kid is fast. He took the ball at one end, ran the floor, zig-zagged 3 defenders and…. missed the layup. But he’ll be a great player.

Nene was non-existant. At one point he subbed out and I hadn’t even realized he was on the floor. I saw that he played something like 26 minutes. I would have guessed about 4.

End of the preseason

I’m glad the games are going to matter soon but even then the preseason losing has sucked.

I’m from San Diego I have instructed my homies and brethren to rally their spirits for a Nugs win

by runningdonut on Oct 23, 2009 8:40 PM MDT reply actions

I knew the game didn't matter last night

but it felt just like the last two games of the WCF. My stomach hurt. That’s lame. I should stop watching professional sports. Nah, I’ll just grab some Maalox.

by NuggBuckets on Oct 23, 2009 8:44 PM MDT up reply actions

Good

I’m glad a little animosity is showing. It’s time to show we don’t like them and the’re gonna get roughed up every time.

TY Lawson

Is 100% better than AC

by samdman on Oct 23, 2009 9:23 PM MDT reply actions

Can't believe I'm saying this.

We obviously don’t have the size to compete with the Lakers. We are gonna have to beat them with speed and quickness. We’ll only be able to do that with Ty Lawson on the floor a lot.

Ty Lawson is the key if we are to win a championship this year.

by NugzD on Oct 23, 2009 9:23 PM MDT reply actions

R U

saying that he’s this year was what CB1 was last year?

by samdman on Oct 23, 2009 9:30 PM MDT up reply actions

I can kinda agree.

We need somebody to run the show and keep things going when Billups goes to the bench. Not only that, its evident from last this game that Ty Lawson can score also! He gets into the lane when ever he wants…he can finish or dish.

by GottaLoveMelo on Oct 25, 2009 9:55 AM MDT up reply actions

I think George Karl

is a damn fool if he doesn’t play Ty Lawson behind AC. Too bad he is a damn fool.

Oh shit!

Haha my bad man. I was meaning to say ‘start Ty Lawson behind CB1 instead of AC.’ I am also a damn fool.

Damn Fool

GK just has to put AC in to fuck shit up. Ac is absolutely useless

by samdman on Oct 23, 2009 9:33 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm so angry AC didn't peace out this offseason

I was told he would be working on his shot and overall game this offseason. Looks like he sat around watching soaps all offseason to me.

Lawson

Great game keeping the pace in our favor Nugs just need to rebound better and they’d be up more

Wow

Ty Lawson is FAST

J.R. is my homeboy

by Greyson on Oct 23, 2009 9:32 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

I feel like a broken record that has started up again this season

J.R. needs to stop pulling up for jumpers and taking the damn ball to the hoop!

J.R. is my homeboy

by Greyson on Oct 23, 2009 9:34 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

I assume you mean for him TO take the ball to the hoop. If he stops “pulling up for jumpers and taking the damn ball to the hoop!”, I’m not real sure what else is left.

by cessair on Oct 23, 2009 9:38 PM MDT up reply actions

I just have no idea

why J.R. continues to take that fadeaway jumper if it never works.

J.R. is my homeboy

by Greyson on Oct 23, 2009 9:45 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

JR

He’s got 16 pts and he’s a +9

by samdman on Oct 23, 2009 9:52 PM MDT up reply actions

But he would be having an even better game if he would take the ball up.

He cooled off at the end of the half with a lot of bad passes and missed shots.

J.R. is my homeboy

by Greyson on Oct 23, 2009 9:58 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions

I believe that the pull up jumper, whether fadeaway or not, is a fairly new part of JR’s game (last season to now). He has always been good at spotting up, and going toward the basket. The pull up is probably the weakest part of his game, but if he can utilize it, it helps him out tremendously.

by cessair on Oct 23, 2009 10:03 PM MDT up reply actions

It would definitely help out

if he could hit it. All I’m worried about is that he’ll continue trying to use that and forget that he can get to the rack on most defenders he’ll face this season.

J.R. is my homeboy

by Greyson on Oct 23, 2009 10:13 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions

I dont know if its because its preseason and Melo and CB werent playing...

but yeah he was shooting that shot alot…just trying it out in a game maybe?

by GottaLoveMelo on Oct 25, 2009 9:58 AM MDT up reply actions

Lawson is very impressive.

He’s got this quirky kinda game that sort of grows on you the more you see him.

I think Mark Jackson made a good point when he said that Lawson’s too good to
sit behind AC- he needs PT to get more experience.

You know what you’re getting with AC, so keeping him on the bench while Lawson
gains experience, is a no-brainer.

Now we’ll all sit back and watch Karl do exactly that!

by Verbal Kint on Oct 23, 2009 10:04 PM MDT reply actions

exactly.

thats what I been screaming since we got lawson.

by GottaLoveMelo on Oct 25, 2009 9:59 AM MDT up reply actions

AC

as usual no pts from the pg position. The Lakers cut the lead. BRING BACK TY

I'm really liking Arron Affalo

Good ball distribution, good mid-range. Big upgrade over Dahntay Jones

by CombatChuk on Oct 23, 2009 10:23 PM MDT reply actions

JR Smith still doesn't get it!

He’s throwin up off-balance jumpers every time he touches the ball.

by Verbal Kint on Oct 23, 2009 10:28 PM MDT reply actions

I would love Petro to be a bigger factor, but he isn't.

I’m going to start referring Johan Petro as “Doormat”. Just lets the opponents step all over him.

Balkman and Lawson

Need to be a regular part of any rotation of GK

by samdman on Oct 23, 2009 10:50 PM MDT up reply actions

Why can't Balkman be "our Artest"?

Why can’t they have him guard the Kobe’s & Lebron’s, or even have him starting instead of AA?
 Why the HELL not?

by Verbal Kint on Oct 23, 2009 10:36 PM MDT reply actions

Great pass from Lawson to Balkman

Good court vision, great job drawing fouls, excellent jumper. Sounds like the formula for a GK guy that sits behind AC!

GIVE LAWSON MINUTES

Karl has to give Lawson minutes from Game 1 forward. I like AC, but Lawson is clearly the better player right now. Lawson will give the Nuggs that explosive dynamic they are going to really need in the first half of the season. I also think he has to find a way to give Balkman minutes – - another intangible player that will give opponents fits.

By the way, if anything, AC seems to be making more bad passes than last year. The guy is walking breathing turnover. Good to see Birdman get his groove back this game… Now, let’s go clobber Utah and send a message to the League!

by ACEIII on Oct 23, 2009 10:50 PM MDT reply actions

Lawson needs to be nurtured behind CB-

and we could be looking at a major force in a coupla years.
The kid has great court-awareness, & he’s a winner.
For all that GK thinks AC brings to the table, its obvious that Lawson dopes all that and more.
If this idiot we have as a coach sits this kid, like he’s done with Balkman since we got him, I say FIRE HIS A$$!!!!

by Verbal Kint on Oct 23, 2009 10:51 PM MDT reply actions

Petro has the worst hands in the NBA

Petro has the absolute worst hands in the NBA. I have never seen him be able to hang onto a loose ball in traffic. His hands remind of the all-time worst hands in NBA history – Nuggets Center Priest Lauderdale. It’s too bad, because Petro has decent size – - if knew how to use it.

by ACEIII on Oct 23, 2009 10:58 PM MDT reply actions

Just think about how bad GK is looking

The mother fucker has AC in front of Lawson in his rotation. AC has gotten so bad that he can’t hardly throw 5 passes per 10 that isn’t deflected or turned over. Lawson is a real stud and he seems NBA ready for sure. Guy can get to the bucket whenever he wants and he makes good decisions when he does.

The next issue that may kill the Nugs this year is GKs unwillingness to play Ronaldo Balkman. Balkman is very effective every time he steps foot on the floor. He could give the Nugs 20 minutes per night of very high intensity defense and serious offensive and defensive rebounding. He is probably worth 5 to 8 points in the plus minus category every night.

It looks to me that GK is gonna bash his head into a wall with the above mentioned issues as long as possible before he is either fired or the entire Pepsi Center croud screams at him for 4 or 5 strait games.

How is this rotation?:

Nene – Subbed by Bird
Kmart – Subbed by Balkman
Melo – Subbed by Balkman or Smith
Graham – Subbed by Smith or Afflalo
Billups – Subbed by Lawson

This is a 10 man rotation and is by far the Nugs best. With this rotation there isn’t a team in the league that I would say has a clear advantage at home or on the road against the Nugs.

Please god allow GK to swallow his pride and utilize the Nugs best rotations for the 2009-10 season. They might as well cut AC because he isn’t needed in any way and they can pay another minimum salary big. Anyone see how awful this guy is? It makes me really frustrated that all pre-season GK has had Balkman as his last man off the bench and yet he has been arguably their most effective sub. Please God please!

by Gasus on Oct 23, 2009 10:59 PM MDT reply actions   1 recs

...

I think this years bench will be better than last years bench if you come off with Lawson, JR, and Afflalo.

JR is gonna do JR
Lawson brings another dimension to the team when Chaunceys out. He’s quick and allows the Nugs to utilize ALL that athleticism we have. Plus he can score himself.
Afflalo is ALOT better than I even knew. Scoring and defense.

by 3ple2Ble on Oct 23, 2009 11:21 PM MDT reply actions

Lawson = Jameer Nelson

Is it just me, or does Ty Lawson remind you a lot of Magic Point Guard Jameer Nelson with his quickness, ability to get to the rim, toughness and smarts?

by ACEIII on Oct 23, 2009 11:23 PM MDT reply actions

Eh.

Not really. I see Jameer as more of a shooter than a set up man. Ty is more of a set up man that can finish. He can make shots, but he’s not a shooter.

by GottaLoveMelo on Oct 25, 2009 10:08 AM MDT up reply actions

Once again, we all see what we have-

but for whatever reason, GK refuses to open his mind. Its AC now, AC forever.
What kinda twisted man-crush does GK have for AC.

Dammit, Ty Lawson HAS to get minutes: 1st off the bench after CB!!!!

by Verbal Kint on Oct 23, 2009 11:27 PM MDT reply actions

What a joke of a recap by ESPN.

Ty Lawson scores 29 points with 6 assists and 5 steals. Highlights?

The Lakers doing their new “coordinated leg crossing” celebration on the bench and showing Odom trying to start a fight with Andersen.

TY LAWSON is quicker than Jameer and better in penetrating

by 3ple2Ble on Oct 23, 2009 11:34 PM MDT reply actions

Uh

I think you are under-estimating the talents of Jameer Nelson. When healthy, the dude is an all-star PG with outstanding blow-by skills and great 3p range. I still vividly remember him absolutely destroying the Nuggets in the Pepsi Center last year.

Ty Lawson is still a badass, but let’s keep the hyperbole down after only a couple of preseason tilts.

by snafu on Oct 24, 2009 2:04 AM MDT up reply actions

I think we know the lakers weakness

its the same its always been, fast pgs…. i know its just a preason game but they always struggle against the tony parkers, chris pauls, and aaron brooks in playoffs
if karl can swall his pride then we could use lawson to show them their flaws, opening up things for melo, cb1, and nene

by hvino on Oct 24, 2009 8:16 AM MDT reply actions

I check in this morning expecting to see a Ty Lawson love fest. It’s not quite what I expected, but you really have to pull for Lawson playing ahed of AC.

by Thursty on Oct 24, 2009 10:28 AM MDT reply actions

Yes we do...

Loudly, and at every game!

WE WANT TY! WE WANT TY!

Given the turnover clinic AC provides whenever he plays, this needs to be chanted at each and every home game until Ty assumes his correct role behind CB.

by Ski Bum on Oct 24, 2009 11:31 AM MDT up reply actions

anyone know the condition of balkman?

after he messed his ankle up last night hitting the scorers table…

by hvino on Oct 24, 2009 2:22 PM MDT reply actions

I think...

its gonna have to come to the point where the players have to sit GK down and say “Hey, Ty needs to play the backup minutes behind Chauncey” ala melo telling GK in the playoffs last year to sit AC and put in Kleiza for some scoring. I really believe its gonna have to get to that point before Karl will give anything to Ty. Because in my eyes, Ty Lawson is the pack up pg.

Like Jeff Teague in Atlanta. There is no question there that he’s the backup point guard behind Bibby. Ty should have that assurance.
