Travis Heath on Denver's Trade Exceptions

An insightful read by Travis Heath of Hoopsworld on the Nuggets trade exceptions and why Denver cannot realistically trade for Captain Jack (Stephen Jackson).

I had the opportunity to meet Travis when Andrew and I attended the Nuggets vs. Partizan preseason game. This guy knows basketball and knows this Denver team inside and out. Just another good read from a knowledgeable writer.

You can read the story here.

Snipet:

When Denver Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien recently mentioned to Chris Dempsey of the Denver Post that his team is never afraid of making a big trade, (which, by the way, is 100 percent supported by this front office's history) many in Denver started speculating about potential deals.  While teams don't often make major deals early in the season, Denver also bucked that trend by dealing for Chauncey Billups on November 3rd of last year.  Add to that the fact that Denver still has a hefty Traded Player Exception (TPE) in its back pocket that expires on November 3rd of this year from the aforementioned Billups' deal and it's easy to understand why people's imaginations are running wild.

If you were losing money...

Kroenke won’t get somebody for the big TPE (+ luxury tax is about 18 million) unless he is an absolute steal. Heck, that’s only going to happen if the Clippers gave us Blake Griffin and their next 10 first round draft picks for it.

well hoopshype is reporting we are eyeing S JAX

we and cleveland are the frontrunners apparently :)
but makes me wonder what would we give up…. i wouldnt mind giving up kmart if we get one of their bigs in return

makes me think

the trade would be like this

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yzze9sw

k mart and 2nd rounder for S jax, turiaf, azubuke

by hvino on Oct 23, 2009 7:32 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

It makes sense for both teams

But we would have WAY too many combo 2-3s then. JR, Graham, Afflalo, Azibuike, Melo, Jax -

and our front court would be a bit thin – thinner than it already is…

by Missing Lynx on Oct 23, 2009 1:01 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

No it does not!

Just give up Kmart and have Turiaf to fill the spot? Geese, give me a break.

Restructure the contract for 200k or so difference

Not a big deal, JAX could restructure with GS and move to Denver. What is a 200k or so to someone making this kind of money? I don’t know how they account for the restructuring but I’m sure it can be done if the will is there on Denver and GS’s part.

I'm not sure about giving up Kmart.

He IS our best post defender despite being 6’9

What about Corey Brewer?

It doesn’t look like the Twolves have any interest in exercising his option and i think one of our trade exceptions would cover his contract. Solid defender with good length who can play the 2 or 3 and I’ve been monitoring him during the preseason and his scoring has been solid. Most games he’s gotten between 15-20 points. He could come off the bench or start (I’d take him over Graham).

He’s young and keep in mind this will be his second year basically – he was out most of last year.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 3/8 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: K-MART'S LEFT KNEE
Best-case scenario, K-Mart misses another week or two with a sore knee.  Worst-case, he's done for the season with knee surgery.

STIFF #2: RON ARTEST
Nice hairdo.  'Nuff said.

STIFF #3: JOEL PRYZBILLA
The Blazers backup center re-injured his surgically repaired right knee after slipping in the shower.  Now we're just waiting for Greg Oden to slip on a banana peel.

STIFF #4: CAVALIERS FANS
Recently set the world record for the largest gathering of people wearing fleece blankets - i.e. Snuggies.  Really?!  This is worthy of a world record?!

STIFF #5: BOSTON CELTICS
Losing to the pathetic Nets and almost losing to the Wizards is one thing.  But to do so at home within a week of each other...now that's an art.  I think it's safe to assume the Celtics are going nowhere in this year's playoffs.
