Preseason Game Thread: Nuggets vs. Lakers (8pm MDT)

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers, Oct 22, 2009 8:00 PM MDT

The Nuggets are in Anaheim tonight to face the Los Angeles Lakers in the first game of a back-to-back with the defending champions. Game two of the "California Tour" will take place Friday October 23rd in San Diego. I'm not quite sure if these last two preseason games are for the players or for the vast number of Californians who want to see the purple and gold live ... either way we'll get to see the Nuggets twice on national TV. Tonight's game is on TNT ... so tune in and take a peek at your Nuggets before the regular season kicks off in just a matter of days.

Double A should start..

..although Graham is off to a good start 2pts 2 boards and a assist in 6 minutes of play..not bad. maybe Coach Karl is going to start Graham instead of aflallo for the first seven games of the season when J.R is suspended..dought that though. Afflalo needs to start.. he is a beast!

by stan_26 on Oct 22, 2009 8:27 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah I doubt that

I think Karl’s just trying out a different lineup. experimenting to see how this bigger lineup plays.

Yea

Can’t he play preseason

by samdman on Oct 22, 2009 8:46 PM MDT up reply actions

He can I think he will play more in the second half and definitely a lot more when we play the lakers tomorrow.

Just want to see how we are without him on the bench or lineup.

by ColoradoAggie11 on Oct 22, 2009 8:48 PM MDT up reply actions

I think GK said he was only going to play JR one half while he figures out what lineups to use during the suspension

by samdman on Oct 22, 2009 8:47 PM MDT up reply actions

this doesn’t make much sense, balkman’s adjusted +/- and efficiency is much better then the playing time he gets

by jgisland on Oct 22, 2009 8:51 PM MDT up reply actions

God damnit AC! Protect the ball!!

Also, stop talking about playing time during the preseason. It has nothing to do with minutes during the regular season. Karl is just trying to get everyone some experience.

Swats.

by BeefySwats on Oct 22, 2009 8:52 PM MDT reply actions

so then why isn’t balkman getting experience?

by jgisland on Oct 22, 2009 8:54 PM MDT up reply actions

He is?

He played almost 25 minutes in the Twolves game.

10 turnovers

Halfway to their average midway through the first half. Just awful.

turnovers

4 TO from Afflalo, 3 TO from AC

by stan_26 on Oct 22, 2009 8:58 PM MDT up reply actions

I know that Karl likes having AC out there as the general for the bench but he is making really dumb decisions. Someone else needs to carry the ball up the court, like say the guy we drafted to do that? He also needs to realize that although he had a nice three last year that was an abberation and that he is much better driving and passing out of the drive

by ColoradoAggie11 on Oct 22, 2009 8:58 PM MDT reply actions

ac sucks

lawson will get more playing time then a rookie normally gets on gk’s teams. north carolina guy and he is super efficient, no fing turnovers. we just have to wait for gk to figure this out.

by jgisland on Oct 22, 2009 9:00 PM MDT up reply actions

yup

Lawson is young but he knows how to control the ball while also pushing the pace, something Carter has not been able to do in the last two years

by BeefySwats on Oct 22, 2009 9:20 PM MDT reply actions

Same old, same old.

I’m not too happy with some of the “non-moves” this team made in the offseason. I don’t know if I can take another GK/AC orchestrated operation for a full 82 games.
Melo will have a MAJOR year- but GK & AC are this team’s liabilities!

by Verbal Kint on Oct 22, 2009 9:42 PM MDT reply actions

gk

i know this sites history, but at this point who would you rather bring in then gk?

by jgisland on Oct 22, 2009 9:44 PM MDT up reply actions

don't hate that idea

gk isn’t gone unless we really struggle, he bought himself some time after last year’s performance. kroenke loves putting these coaches in lame duck situation

by jgisland on Oct 22, 2009 9:58 PM MDT up reply actions

Here we go

You have a Hall of famer on the bench in AC

by samdman on Oct 22, 2009 9:46 PM MDT reply actions

Geez, Kobe.....-sigh-

This SOB will haunt us for the next 5 years. What a move!

by Verbal Kint on Oct 22, 2009 9:54 PM MDT reply actions

Nah

Kobe can be beaten. It’s the rest of the Lakers I’m worried about.

Swats.

by BeefySwats on Oct 22, 2009 9:55 PM MDT up reply actions

Precisely!

If they get good, not great, contributions from their supporting cast, they’ll likely repeat.
We, on the other hand, have to have all our cylinders at full throttle- just to get back to the WCFinals.

by Verbal Kint on Oct 22, 2009 10:02 PM MDT reply actions

Why're you beign so defeatist?

Chauncey has had a full training camp, Nene, Kenyon and Birdman are all healthy, Melo is looking better than ever, JR is still JR, Afflalo is definitely an improvement over Dahntay, and Balkman is a more than adequate replacement for Kleiza.

Give it some time.

Swats.

by BeefySwats on Oct 22, 2009 10:05 PM MDT up reply actions

STATEMENT game- even if its preseason.

I can’t believe we didn’t look to get BIGGER in the offseason. We can’t compete against this Lakers team- thats obvious.

by Verbal Kint on Oct 22, 2009 10:04 PM MDT reply actions

I missed the first 3 minutes of the 3rd quarter but

J.R. hasn’t played yet has he? That’s infuriating to me.

J.R. is my homeboy

just trying to see how we will be for the first 7 games. So far just sloppy. If weren’t so sloppy we would be winning right now.

Karl said the starters wouldn’t play the final pre-season game if they played well but i think we need at least another half to keep working on protecting the ball and playing better team, or half court, offense.

by ColoradoAggie11 on Oct 22, 2009 10:12 PM MDT up reply actions

Not a Debbie Downer-

…just being realistic. We stood still, while they got better.

by Verbal Kint on Oct 22, 2009 10:09 PM MDT reply actions

Jeez...

Another Mbenga swat…I mean, c’mon, DJ MBENGA?!

by Agaliarept on Oct 22, 2009 10:12 PM MDT reply actions

Exactly-

That bench warmer is bigger than anyone we have. It was glaringly obvious last year that SIZE was a factor vs the LakeShow. So why didn’t we address it?

by Verbal Kint on Oct 22, 2009 10:14 PM MDT up reply actions

Every one got big except the Nuggets.

GK talking that BS that the leauge was catching up with the Nuggets. BS They surpassed us

by samdman on Oct 22, 2009 10:17 PM MDT up reply actions

LAWSON!

What an awesome floater.

Melo is just STROKIN’ it right now.

WTF???? the guy’s a turnover waiting to happen.

by Verbal Kint on Oct 22, 2009 10:20 PM MDT reply actions

He also took a 18 footer on the fastbreak!

1 on like 3 or 4. I dont want you shooting that shot if you’re WIDE open much less off the dribble on a lopsided fastbreak!

by GottaLoveMelo on Oct 23, 2009 6:48 AM MDT up reply actions

I don't comment much

And I don’t ever panic about preseason games. But Anthony Carter looks awful. I mean terrible. If he sees more time than Lawson this year I will be pissed.

by Business Socks on Oct 22, 2009 10:20 PM MDT reply actions

Get ready to be pissed.

We won’t see much of Lawson or Balkman- book it!

by Verbal Kint on Oct 22, 2009 10:21 PM MDT up reply actions

I'll pass on that one

I don’t even want to think of that possibility right now.

by GoldenNugget on Oct 22, 2009 10:22 PM MDT up reply actions

Uhh...

I’m not liking the look of our defensive rotations. How many times are we leaving a man wide open? We’re getting killed out there.

by Agaliarept on Oct 22, 2009 10:21 PM MDT reply actions

Carter really does look terrible.

That steal attempt on Vujacic left Brown wide open for that corner three

by Agaliarept on Oct 22, 2009 10:24 PM MDT reply actions

Lawson is going to be great and Balkman is getting PT this season.

You guys are a bunch of chicken littles. Give me a break.

Swats.

by BeefySwats on Oct 22, 2009 10:25 PM MDT reply actions

Ty Lawson, clearly, CLEARLY, looks like the better backup PG option

If Karl latches onto Carter, like he is apt to do with sh!tty players, I will call for his head.

by Business Socks on Oct 22, 2009 10:26 PM MDT reply actions

Agreed

Unless we’re winning of course. AC can play 48 minutes a game for all I care if we’re successful. Although I’m just nitpicking. :/

by Agaliarept on Oct 22, 2009 10:27 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah if we're winning

I worry there won’t be too much of that winning stuff if Carter gets extensive minutes this year.

by Business Socks on Oct 22, 2009 10:28 PM MDT up reply actions

BSwats-

We’ve seen this movie before. Until proven otherwise, this is GK’s philosophy. AC has to screw up ROYALLY & REPEATEDLY, before getting benched for a rookie. And Balkman won’t see time because of offensive liabilities, Guaranteed- just watch.

by Verbal Kint on Oct 22, 2009 10:28 PM MDT reply actions

You're wrong

Lawson is going to develop a lot like Rose did this season because it is clear that he’s the more gifted backup talent.

Carter is going to have his bad games. You have to accept this.

Balkman WILL see time because we have more than enough offensive firepower to make up for his “offensive liabilities”, and he provides a stellar boarding and defensive effort.

Swats.

by BeefySwats on Oct 22, 2009 10:31 PM MDT up reply actions

Believe me-

I hope i’m wrong!
We watched & waited for balkman to get PT last year, & nothing happened. AC lost big games w/ bonehead plays, yet he still got extensive PT.
Lawson looks like a keeper, but GK doesn’t like rookies- check his history.
As for Balkman, he would be perfect as our own Artest, but he sits on the bench until garbage time.
Its the way the guy coaches, & you’ll be a witness all year long.

by Verbal Kint on Oct 22, 2009 10:38 PM MDT up reply actions

AC has never had to earn minutes

He is the default choice for GK regardless of how he plays. George Karl explained to a reporter that he doesn;t look at turnovers or statistics and trusts AC’s experience which is why he likes to play him a lot.

by GottaLoveMelo on Oct 22, 2009 10:31 PM MDT reply actions

Pick and Roll

And least we defended it well that time. Haven’t been really paying attention to it lately.

by Agaliarept on Oct 22, 2009 10:33 PM MDT reply actions

$$$$$$$$$

How much would it cost to buy a “bench AC” billboard? Would anyone want to pitch in?

by adub on Oct 22, 2009 10:33 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

Night guys

good effort by Melo tonight. Kinda disappointing to see Balkman and JR get no PT, but I understand.

Quick stats:

Melo had 5 turnovers, Afflalo had SIX, Carter had 5, Chauncey had 4.

Melo had 28/6/3, Chauncey had 19/6/5.

Swats.

by BeefySwats on Oct 22, 2009 10:41 PM MDT reply actions

PT for your TOs: Melo 32 min, AA 28 min, AC 11 min, CB 34 min.

While all those turnover numbers are terrible, you can’t compare AC’s production with the others. That’s leaving out the fact that AC contributed nothing else except one asst, while the others had contributions in other areas.

by cessair on Oct 22, 2009 10:48 PM MDT up reply actions

I don’t think he was defending AC, just pointing it out.

by Agaliarept on Oct 22, 2009 10:51 PM MDT up reply actions

I wasn’t trying to attack beefy, though reading it myself, it seems a little that way. Just wanted to point out the difference.

by cessair on Oct 22, 2009 10:55 PM MDT up reply actions

5 turnovers in 11 minutes is ridiculous

Afflalo and Billups also played unacceptably bad. The Nuggets were missing JR and Balkman but they just got mopped up by the Lakers JV squad. Seriously they lost in the fourth quarter against LA’s scrubs. Hopefully they will play better tomorrow but man that was a truly embarrassing team effort.

1. THE NUGGETS AT HOME
How is it possible that a Nuggets team with this much talent can be 7-5 at home?! Things have gotten so bad that fans are clamoring for J.R. Smith to return.

2. CARMELO ANTHONY
Kobe Bryant plays through any and all ailments. Melo uses any and ailments as an excuse not to play.

Just when the T'Wolves are looking better, Love stomps on Luis Scola and lands himself a two-game suspension.
