Ty Lawson's coming out party...

As documented by HoopsWorld's Travis Heath, after two tough shooting nights, Ty Lawson finally put together a great game in Summer League, scoring 26 points (on 11-16 shooting), grabbing five rebounds and dishing out five assists against the Trail Blazers Summer League squad last night. Coby Karl continued his solid Vegas play missing just one of his six shot attempts (a three-pointer) and grabbing several rebounds and dishing out a trio of assists himself. And Sonny Weems shot decently (7-17) by Sonny Weems' standards.

You can watch Lawson talk about his Summer League experience here.

Does anyolne else find it interesting that Lawson plays his best game tus far right ater reports that AC might be going to Memphis? I think Mr. Lawson wants that number 2 sport pretty bad and is proving it.

I really hope Sonny makes the team or at least gets an invite. I saw an interview he did with Kamla and he seems like a really intelligent, respectful and witty kid. I understand he is a bit out of control and his shooting % is kind of wack, but I think it would be benificial to the team to have more guys like him on the roster, even if he doesn't play much. Plus, there is no question he can score. And he was a QB in high school too, so obviously he knows how to be a leader. AND, he has pretty much had success everywhere he has gone in any sport he has played.

As for Lawson, I am so glad he finally broke out of his slump. He scored the most point of any player in Summer League last night and was 2nd in assists of any player as well. That is impressive, especially going up against a guy like Bayless. And Weems scored the 2nd most points of any player last night as well. I am really excited for both these guys.

From HoopsHypes...

"He was absolutely phenomenal doing virtually whatever he wanted to do on the floor finishing with 26 points, five assists, and five rebounds. He also outplayed Jerryd Bayless when the two were matched head-to-head at various points during the game."

I agree Goldennugget. I also like the fact that he seems to hustle on every play. In my opinion, his problem is that it looks like he's trying to make the team on every play. I think he'd be better if he relaxed a little and just played.

Epsn reported that he scored the 26 points in 17 possessions. Not sure if they meant 17 shots, or if he was only on the court for 17 possessions. That seems low.

Where is Weems going to play though? Denver already has two young SG's in Smith and Afflalo. I think Weems could be a good piece to move for a big man.

by Garrett on Jul 18, 2009 2:03 PM MDT reply actions

Unless, when Billups retires Afflalo converts to a Pg and backs up Lawson while Weems is Denver's 6th man. I could easily see that happen. Afflalo can play a little point.

I worry about the way Lawson kept talking about how different it was in these NBA games and how he was just having to get used to the NBA game. He hasn't played an NBA game yet.

GN, I don't think you could actually say Weems has been successful everywhere he's been.... I don't think Arkansas was all that successful. They MIGHT have made the NCAA tournament once or twice in his time there, but even if they made it all 4, they weren't what I'd classify as successful. Statistically maybe, but a successful leader? Nah... not yet, but maybe in the future.

Also, Garrett, as much hope as we have for Weems here, I highly doubt he's very highly regarded anywhere else and thus worth of being a valued asset in a trade. Would be nice if he was though.

by Eric K on Jul 18, 2009 6:24 PM MDT reply actions

Yea Eric i agree, basically i'm saying he could be a good filler in a trade to finalise it. But your right he prob. doesn't have much stock right now

Nice post Andrew and thank you for staying on top of the summer league.

Okay I just watched the highlights and if Coby Karl keeps playing how he is, he would be a great back up for J.R. and Melo.

Lawson, I figured he would be able to bounce back.

Weems, I'm going to have to agree with Andrew (sorry guys) hasn't im pressed me at all.

Any way my thoughts so far.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
