The Nuggets suddenly need a two-guard...

Yahoo! Sports is reporting that the Indiana Pacers have signed Dahntay Jones to a four year, $11 million contract. Congrats to Dahntay for securing some serious cash in a bad NBA economy.

Now it's time for the Nuggets to find a new "shooting" guard and a new cheerleader from the bench. I heard Darnell Mee is available cheap.

On a side note, I'm so glad that our ticket dollars will be contributed to Antonio McDyess' contract so that he can play for the Spurs, likely making them better than the Nuggets. Gotta love that salary cap.

Hey Andrew... ur thoughts on:

Marquis Daniels, Keith Bogans or even Josh Childress as replacements?

Sonny Weems

Ha ha small post, Andrew.

I was thinking Matt Barnes for this spot, Or maybe Sonny Weems. One thing for sure there are a lot of 2 guards on the market so the nuggets have their pick of the litter.

by Agent Fisher on Jul 9, 2009 8:01 AM MDT reply actions

From the little I know about him, Daniels is a good player. I don't know how he fits HERE, but he can score.

Best wishes Dahntay. I don't think he made the best "team" move, but definitely a good financial one.

by Eric K on Jul 9, 2009 8:17 AM MDT reply actions

I'm for Von Wafer since DJ left.
Look at what he did for Houston given the opportunity to play.
The key to Denver's success is to get rid of GK. With Weems in the house and other new players coming it is a sure bet that GK's ego and arrogance will surface.
I'm in the camp of the Stiff who is waiting for the FO to pull off the blockbuster deal but no matter who we get George Karl needs to be gone in order for it to work.

by samIam on Jul 9, 2009 8:40 AM MDT reply actions

Gotta give Weems a shot. He's averaging about 20 PPG in the D-L. He's not a rookie, so Karl's gotta give him at least a couple of minutes behind JR. He's already on the team so it won't be as if the Nuggs are taking on more salary or anything. Besides if after a hile it seems like he's not working out the Nuggs can always shop around for someone else. The team has until after all star break to settle the roster. Give the kid a chance.

by Joelsopinion on Jul 9, 2009 8:49 AM MDT reply actions

I'm going with Weems too. I mean, if we are paying the kid, and he's no longer a rookie why not get him involved? Look at some of the rookies over that past few years that have made a huge impact with thier teams (Big Baby, Aaron Brooks, Courntey Lee, ect). We are a great team already so we don't need him to make a huge impact. We just need an extra body on the floor who can actually shoot. Plus, I don't know about everyone else, but I want to see this kid dunk!

by Goldennugget on Jul 9, 2009 9:37 AM MDT reply actions

I want to see Weems (or whoever fills the hole) play some D! I don't care about the dunks as much as filling the void.

by Eric K on Jul 9, 2009 10:00 AM MDT reply actions

i would like to see weems get a shot at the backup 2 but what i really want to see is thr nuggz make a play for amare.i believe he wants out and i think we could get him and keep nene but if nene has 2 be part of the package then so be it.you cant compare those 2 guys amare is waaaaaaaaay better.im sick and tired of watching the west get better and now its a fact the spurs are better than the nuggets with the signining of mcdyess.th FO needs to do somehting to get amare because if they dont carmelo will make his exit when the hometown hero hangs up the sneakers.GO NUGGETS AND GO AMARE

by Anonymous on Jul 9, 2009 11:37 AM MDT reply actions

i agree...amare would be an amazing pickup and he'd put us over the top for sure.a starting lineup of CB JR MELO AMARE and NENE is terrifying because all of them require a double team.the only team capable of beating that is the celtics NOT THE LAKERS

by Anonymous on Jul 9, 2009 11:40 AM MDT reply actions

How do you suggest getting Amare without A) messing up the cap, and B) giving up Nene?

by Eric K on Jul 9, 2009 12:27 PM MDT reply actions

Yeah Anon 1 & 2 the math doesn't work. And hell no we're not dumping Nene. It's not a matter of skill in question. Amare is better, but his attitude problem could only make for trouble. Not to mention the fact that we don't know how healthy he is. Leave good enough alone. The only guy I'd have at PF over Nene is Boozer. Unless we could pull an LA trick and have 2 seven footers at the 4 and 5 spots. That aint happening. And considering the fact that Nene and Amare are both PF and not C, we still haven't solved our most obvious issue...Having an acctual starting center.

by Joelsopinion on Jul 9, 2009 12:39 PM MDT reply actions

I think the JR moving into the starting spot and Weems backing him up makes the most sense at this point. By not getting another 2-guard the Nuggets will have a little bit more spending room to spend for C or PF. I like Amare over Nene because he is more athletic, scores more and rebounds more, but I don't think the Nugs would pull that deal. Personally I really like Klieza and think he should get more playing time now, but if the Nugs aren't willing to get rid of Nene I think Klieza may have to be included in a good trade package.

by Alex on Jul 9, 2009 1:03 PM MDT reply actions

Eric from what I've heard Weems is a good defender, and he can shoot. In my eyes he is an upgrade from Dhante, but we will have to wait and see how he does in the Summer League.

On a different note, seems like we missed the boat on the Channing Frye sweepstakes. He is reportedly signing with Cleveland.

by Goldennugget on Jul 9, 2009 2:14 PM MDT reply actions

Chris Anderson, Sonny Weems, Ty Lawson, Renaldo Balkman, Linas Kleiza. Assuming JR starts these are five guys who all deserve playing time. Petro is borderline in my book. I want a great shooting defensive minded 2 guard also but I'm pretty sure the FO is gonna stick with the five above. None is a natural 2 but here's a chance for Karl to creatively solve the problem with lineups and matchups.

by NugzD on Jul 9, 2009 2:55 PM MDT reply actions

This is getting rediculous. We're "missing the boat" on everyone. It's making me start to think that the Nuggies are viewed as a toxic organization. What variables might a free agent weigh in selecting a team?

1.) $MONEY$ These discussions occur behind closed doors and we don't hear about them until agreements have been made, so there's not much point in speculating what's been offered to whom.

2.) Chances at winning a championship. We all know what the Nuggets did last year, and there was a common assumption that this would help us sign free agents in the offseason, but so far this hasn't been the case. So what the hell is going on?

3.) Playing time. Again, the results here seem counter-intuitive. Can anyone tell me that McDyess will get more PT in San Antonio than Denver? What about Frye in Cleveland? Sheed in Boston?

4.) Current team chemistry. OK, B.C. (before Chauncey) there were definite issues. But with one simple trade everthing changed and the Nuggets took off. Sure JR's in the clink right now and KMart has had issues in the past and Melo is the unquestioned superstar...but these add up to being par for the course in the NBA. I don't see how someone could be turned off by the current roster.

5.) Location. I get it, dusty old cow town. Fly-over state. Small market. But would you honestly choose Cleveland over Denver? Do the fans and media respond any more harshly in Denver than Boston or New York?

6.) Coaching staff. Finally, I get to my point. OK, you're a FA in the NBA. You have the choice of playing for: Doc Rivers, Mike Brown, Phil Jackson, Greg Popovich, Mike D'Antoni or the Great George Karl. Who would you pick? I know I'm biased; I've never liked the turd. But I think you have to at least wonder if GK's history with calling out players in the media and mindless substitution patterns have any negative effect on a FA's decision making.

I think the question's at least worth asking...

by MJKeenan on Jul 9, 2009 3:06 PM MDT reply actions

Joelsopinion, I agree, everything included we stick with Nene.

I for one almost prefer not having the Nuggets mentioned all the time. The media does a good job of talking itself into or out of hypotheticals. Last year when no one had the Nuggets even in the playoffs, (except you Andrew) it seemed like the whole team played a little harder.

Marion for 5 years? J-Kidd for another 3? Hedo for 5? Even McDyess is fading. Artest for another five when he was already showing serious signs of slowing down last year? None of this stuff outside of the Gortat signing seems really impressive.

I'd rather the Nuggets be the underdogs again and have to fight than walk into the year considered favorites. They are already good, even as constucted they will contend for the West this year. (hopefully with another wise in-season trade, we'll add some talent where the holes will show.)

I'd rather bring back a team ready to prove to the world that last year was not a fluke than a complacent group thinking they can waltz into the WCF's. Our talent is not the problem, it's the attitude of the team. Maybe if they think they have to play at the top of their game to win they'll do it for a whole season. That would be a team worth watching.

by NugzD on Jul 9, 2009 3:27 PM MDT reply actions

Nugget Nation,
What's with giving up Nene for ANOTHER POINT FORWARD?
Nene is fine if he can play his natural position. POINT FORWARD!!
We need a CENTER not a POINT FORWARD!!
What part of this DON'T you who are calling for a POINT FORWARD trade understand?
C E N T E R = These days some one who's seven feet or taller, who is a dominate force in the middle.

by samIam on Jul 9, 2009 4:07 PM MDT reply actions

MJKeen,
Excellent post one the FO and those who think he should be offered an extension must take in to consideration.
GK is a has been and a won't get a championship coach.

by samiam on Jul 9, 2009 4:23 PM MDT reply actions

Free agents not coming to Denver has nothing to do with Karl. The Nuggets haven't even extended an offer to any of these free agents for them to turn down. Blame it on the FO if you want to blame it on anyone. You can't place the blame on Karl for this one.

by Brian on Jul 9, 2009 4:34 PM MDT reply actions

Hey MJ, I'm sorry if I set of your rant there with my news about Frye, but I guess I might have been wrong. Some guy over on the ESPN Sportsnation Messageboards made a thread about it with a link, but I never clicked on the link. I just figured if there was a link then it was true, but when I finally clicked on the link there wasn't anything saying he signed with them. So, my bad.

I really hope we sign Frye. He is exactly what we need, a big who can streach the floor. Him and Birdman would counter each other perfectly comming off the bench. Birdman would hold down the middle with the defense and he could streach the floor with his shooting. I honestly think Frye would be a steal.

by Goldennugget on Jul 9, 2009 4:57 PM MDT reply actions

Barring a miracle Steven Hunter for Marc Gasol trade, I think Frye is the best big available. But Im not against being patient. If it aint broke dont fix it and we were damn close last year. We do need another big to match up with the Lakers but DO NOT trade Nene to do it.
As far as the 2 goes. Id go with Weems or possibly Kareem Rush if he plays well in the summer league. He can shoot.
Even without DJ we are still deep. Balkman should get his minutes this year. What am I saying? Karl is still the coach.

by go nugs on Jul 9, 2009 5:19 PM MDT reply actions

According to Woody Paige, Karl does not like Weems. Paige thought he'd be traded.

by Anonymous on Jul 9, 2009 6:00 PM MDT reply actions

Anon - Karl's a jackass. The article on Roundball Mining said Weems was a really nice kid, plus he was the leading scorer on the D-League champions 14ers last year while only being 5th in minutes. What is not to like about the kid?

GN,
GK is putting SW in the same boat that JR was in. When JR took SW to the allstar game Karl developed that attitude towards him.
I made this statement a long time ago and I bet that he has problems with rookies because of his son.

by samiam on Jul 9, 2009 8:51 PM MDT reply actions

Sign and trade Kleiza and AC for DeAndre Jordan and Mardy Collins (then waive collins).

He is big, athletic, very good shotblocker and rebounder and is young.
He is quick enough for a big man to keep up with our running game and takes up a heap of real estate on D.
He has a younger Dwight Howard type build and is quite raw, but hey, he is only 20y.o.

We need size & athleticism, LAC need heart and scoring.
Win/win.

I don't think it's time to panic. The same thing that happens every year is happening again this summer only worse because of the economic situation. The big name free agents go fast and the second tier takes a long time to get signed. The Nuggs signed their top priority FA, Chris Andersen. They lost a starter 2 guard who couldn't shoot and played backup minutes, so what's the big deal with that? They already said JR would start at the 2 next season. I don't understand why GK doesn't think to put in a big line-up with Melo at the 2 once in a while (Nene, Bird, Kmart, Melo, CB). The Nuggets don't need another super star and they can't afford one either. Weems may back up JR, but there're lots of other possibilites for little money.
Ever since Andrew posted about the Lakers being too tall for the Nuggets, it's been pretty obvious that they need a true, over 6' 10' big guy that GK will play for at least 10 minutes per game. I think there are guys out there who can fill that role. Hopefully it will be Channing Frye, who is probably looking for more playing time than he thinks he'd get in Denver. Some of the guys that Andrew mentioned in his free agent post as being too expensive are probably watching their price sink day by day (I'm thinking Mikki Moore, whom the Nuggets have shown interest in previously). You may need to let Kleiza go to afford that big guy. Maybe the FO doesn't see that as such a glaring need, who knows?
One thing I don't understand is why the Nuggets don't request the same kind of exception for Hunter that the Rockets got for Yao. More than one doctor has told Hunter that he may never play again. As I mentioned before, Kroenke is on record saying that he won't mind if the Nuggets start the season over the cap. It's not where you start the season, it's where you end.

Frye is outta the question, oficially. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-hillsuns071009&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

Goldennugget, as my dear old dad used to say "I'll see it when I believe it" (yes he really did say that exactly as I typed it). We've heard a lot of rumors, of course this is the first one with numbers. To me the numbers are somewhat surprisingly low, I would have thought that the Nuggets could have offered the same deal. Maybe their interest in Frye was a smoke screen, or maybe Frye didn't want to come here and play less of a role than he might in PHX.

How is it possible that a Nuggets team with this much talent can be 7-5 at home?! Things have gotten so bad that fans are clamoring for J.R. Smith to return.
