Our PG Position Just Got Worse

Nice to see the injuries starting already this season *smacking head against desk*

http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/sep/24/nuggets-atkins-miss-camp-after-knee-surgery/

Chucky Atkins is having surgery on his knee and is out six weeks.  So now we're bringing in Matean Cleaves and Jamon Gordon to be training camp fodder.  I really wish we would go after Sergio Rodriguez or Peteri Kopponen of Portland if not Kyle Lowry of Memphis.  I'm a firm believer in always having a young PG with potential on the roster, similar to QB in the NFL.

Matean Cleaves and Jamon Gordon

There some household names for ya. I was looking forward to seeing Chucker this season. This is bad. He could have been an X-factor for us this season. Guess AC will continue to fill his role as the worst starting PG in the NBA. JLucas, do you think we should have helf onto Tareen Green? I doubt it would have been a deal breaker for Balkman.

Umm...Shaun Livingston anyone?

I was never a fan of the Chucky Atkins signing so I am certainly not upset with this news. Between Cleaves and Gordon I would rather bring in Gordon, because we are all familiar with Mateen’s work. I was encouraged by the quote from Karl in the article JLucas linked to that he would be happy to play AI and J.R. at the point. I think those two should be the primary backcourt for this team.

I agree with JLucas that Rodriguez or Lowry would be nice fits here, but this seems to be a perfect excuse to bring in Shaun Livingston. I understand the Nuggets can save money by giving Cleaves or Gordon non-guaranteed deals and waive them before the become vested, but Atkins will likely miss more games and Carter has not been a bastion of health either. Why not pay a few extra bucks to bring in Livingston and maybe acquire the point guard of the future on the cheap right now?

I LOVE Livingston

Absolutely love him. One of my friends stopped talking basketball with me during his rookie season because every conversation ended up being about him eventually. That said, the rumors around him right now is that he has to ice his knee down for 24 hours after every practice he does. I think we’re still a year away from seeing a team sign him. I’d love to see the Nugs be that team, but I don’t know if our front office is willing to do a gamble like that. If we keep AI, he’s the perfect combo because he gets rid of the two biggest problems AI gives us — undersized and poor defense.

I wanted to love Green. He got ~6 minutes of game play against us while with Portland and looked good. In scrub time for us he looked good. But in the summer league, he looked awful. I don’t blame the Nugs for letting him go.

Speaking of summer league players, can someone tell me where Elton Brown is? Why is he not on our roster?

Elton Brown

I have been wondering the same thing. He will be on someone’s training camp roster, but if that someone was going to be the Nuggets I think he would have been signed by now. Then again, maybe he is holding out hoping to get guaranteed money from someone before he settles for what the Nuggets are offering.

That is bad news on Livingston. If that is indeed the case then it does not make sense to sign him at this point.

Elton Brown...

..just signed with the Bulls. Was reading up on him the other day, can’t believe we passed up on him.

Dammit

That’s going to be a big mistake. Instead, we get Nick Fazekas? Really?

by JLucas4092 on Sep 28, 2008 9:15 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I completely agree

For what this team needs it is a very bad trade off. The only way bringing in Fazekas instead of Brown makes sense is if they are completely looking toward the future and they believe Fazekas has a higher ceiling than Brown, which may very well be true.

Still Brown is much more of a sure thing. A big buy who can bang and board is very useful.

14ers

He was nice with the 14ers. He will be solid role player in the league. Fazekas’ footwork is too slow to keep up with anybody on defense and he can’t get his shot off quick enough. It worked for him at Nevada, but I don’t think it will translate into the pros…I hope I’m wrong though

Sorry JLucas

But I can not see Shaun playing any serious pro ball ever again. Players who do just do their ACL have issues for the rest of their careers; Livingston’s injury was an absolute orthapaedic catastrophe. He mangled every ligament and meniscal cartilage in the joint and tore of the end of his tibia. Even as a backup he will continue to have pain and joint instability. Livingston is a thing of the past.

That's What I Figured

Which is an absolute shame. He was a classy guy on and off the court. Plus, he was a phenomenal passer and defender. Sigh.

I’m 100% behind a Livingston signing. If he could get healthy he’d be a great fit next to Iverson … plus he’s young and could have a long term future here. Love the idea of taking a chance on Livingston.

Marbury

I think the team has to take major risks to improve themselves.

This risk – Marbury – will have no long term ramifications if he’s signed to a one year deal.

He might be good, it could be worth the chance.

If the Nugs sign Marbury

I’m taking a year off from the team.

There’s a chance it could blow up in your face … but there’s also a chance it could work.

Low money, only one year ….. can walk away in a heartbeat if things aren’t right. Just cut him, it’s likely only a minimum contract.

The team has to take risks to take steps forward this year. They simply don’t have enough talent, enough balance or enough assets/flexibility to choose-y.

by NBR on Sep 25, 2008 4:01 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I understand the thought process

If the Nuggets were desperate to succeed this season I can see why taking a flier on a risky guy like Marbury might make sense. At this point the number of available experienced talented cheap players is pretty much nil. However, with the Nuggets looking to reign in spending giving a player even just a veteran minimum contract is more than they are willing to do. The fact that players like Elton Brown or even a Shaun Livingston are not signed show how serious they are about spending as little as possible this season (that is in case the Camby trade did not prove it to you in and of itself).

They are going to do their best this season and as we have all discussed, they have enough talent to make the playoffs, but there is no way you can argue that the organization is as committed to winning this year as they were last year. Fortunately, I think next year they will be focused back to winning again.

As far as Marbury the player, I do not think he would be a good fit for this team. (Looking back over his career the only place Marbury was a good fit was Minnesota, but he forced his way out as reportedly he did not like playing in Kevin Garnett’s shadow. ) We have enough shoot first play defense later guys on this roster and Marbury seems to be crazier than any current Nugget, which is saying something.

How does that trade look? Portland throws in Kopenen to Denver.

Trade

Honestly, I do not think the Nuggets would do that deal and I doubt Portland would either. If the Nuggets trade AI it will be for financial reasons and that trade only saves them about $900,000. I doubt Portland would throw in their typical $3 million, which is the only way to make it financially palatable for Denver.

what do you guys think about Ben gordon. i think he’ll make a good PG/SG Him and AI can switch during the game it wouldn’t matter.

by Melo15 on Sep 28, 2008 4:55 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I really like Ben actually...

People have been tearing him to pieces this offseason, claiming he has openly stated he wants Luol Deng money because he scores more when in fact there is no actual evidence he has said anything of the sort. Think about it though, if you were the best scorer on the team for multiple seasons you would at least want consideration for a big fat multi-year contract. But obviously there is more to scoring in game, and he can have horrible shooting nights. Frankly, though, I think Luol Deng is overrated. A man his size should have a much better FGA%, and he should probably grab more boards.

He is not a great fit for Denver any way you looks at it though. He is never going to a playmaker, which is what we need. He is a high-volume scorer off the bench and it could be a disaster having him and JR competing for minutes; in fact there have been a few articles directly adressing the similarities between JR and BG looking at whether BG even deserves a contract the size of JR’s. And most importantly, there is no way Stan K. would pay BG anything near what he wants. BG certainly won’t be in powder blue any time soon.

by joshhopp on Sep 28, 2008 9:01 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Gordon is pretty above average

Gordon is a big time scorer, but as joshhopp pointed out, he does not do much more than that and is pretty streaky. I think J.R. is not only a more explosive scorer, but he is also a greater all around talent and much more capable of helping in ways other than scoring than Gordon is.

I bet if Gordon was two or three inches taller he would have already been paid.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 3/8 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: K-MART'S LEFT KNEE
Best-case scenario, K-Mart misses another week or two with a sore knee.  Worst-case, he's done for the season with knee surgery.

STIFF #2: RON ARTEST
Nice hairdo.  'Nuff said.

STIFF #3: JOEL PRYZBILLA
The Blazers backup center re-injured his surgically repaired right knee after slipping in the shower.  Now we're just waiting for Greg Oden to slip on a banana peel.

STIFF #4: CAVALIERS FANS
Recently set the world record for the largest gathering of people wearing fleece blankets - i.e. Snuggies.  Really?!  This is worthy of a world record?!

STIFF #5: BOSTON CELTICS
Losing to the pathetic Nets and almost losing to the Wizards is one thing.  But to do so at home within a week of each other...now that's an art.  I think it's safe to assume the Celtics are going nowhere in this year's playoffs.
