Are The Nugs A Playoff Team RIGHT NOW?

While responding to Josh’s great fanpost, I started wondering if I was in the minority on the Nuggets playoff chances.  It seems like a few of you guys really like where the team is heading.  While it appears a majority of this site thinks that Camby isn’t as big of a loss as the talking heads do (myself being included in that group), some of you guys seem to either think the Nugs will be better next year, or the West in general will be worse.

There are reasons for optimism:

* Melo is a year older, and starting to reach his potential of being a 25 & 10 player

* AI is in a contract year and motivated

* Nene is finally healthy (knock on wood)

* K-Mart proved last year that he can still be a solid contributor

* JR is ready to make the leap

* Dallas and Phoenix are both older and not better

There are reasons for pessimism:

* AI is a year older.  Is this the year he breaks down?

* Nene is NEVER healthy

* Who runs the point?

* What is Karl’s state of mind?

* Frontcourt depth?  Birdman?  Really?

* Our Portland overlords are arriving.  Be afraid.  Be very afraid.

So do you, as of right now, think the Nuggets are a playoff team in the West?  Why or why not?

As a Blazer fan I want to believe no.

However between the Nugs, Blazers, Dallas and Clippers I think the 7th and 8th spots are up for grabs between any of those teams. It’s hard to say what state the Nuggets will be in this year though. I’m no Melo fan but he is a very talented player and combined with AI you guys have a deadly offense (even if it isn’t all that organized).

I think the Nugget defense is underrated but, after losing the players you did the negative comments about the Nuggets defense may be deserved this year. Part of the reason the Nugget defense can look so bad at times is because of the offense. Everyone likes to run around and it never looks like they are actually running plays. Being unorganized on one end leads to being unorganized on the other. Again I think the defense was underrated last year but will deserve what its called this year. I’ve heard a lot of Nugget fans say they need a new coach and I would tend to agree.

Anyway, it’s hard to say at this point. You guys have the talent but to me it really looks like there will be 4 teams fighting for those last 2 spots. For both of our teams here’s hoping Dallas makes a dramatic drop off and the Clippers B.Diddy era doesn’t work out. I think you guys have a better chance than the Clippers, though in all honesty I’d rather see the Clips make it than the Nuggets! As for the Blazers, it depends a lot on how Oden does his first year. I’m going to vote yes because I think the Blazers and Nuggets will both be better than Dallas or Clippers this year, and the Warriors to me seem finished for the year with Ellis out for awhile and Maggette running the show.

Even though I’m more anti nuggets than passive nuggets, good luck this year!

Oooh! A Blazers Fan!

Awesome. Even though you’re our new overlords, I LOVED watching you guys last year, you have something special going on in Portland. I’m surprised to see that you think you’re fighting for 7th or 8th though. I may be higher on you guys than most, but I see you around the 5 seed and making Utah sweat for the division title.

Just for the record JLucas...

I wouldn’t say I love where the team is heading. But given the circumstances I’m not as worried as you.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 11/4 by Nate)

STIFF #1: DAN HAWKINS
After predicting 10 wins for his club before the season the Buffs find themselves just 2-6 with four games to play. To add injury to insult ... former 5-star prized recruit Darrell Scott announced he'll be transferring to UCLA after just 1 1/2 seasons at CU. Another black eye for the program and hopefully the final nail in Hawk's coaching coffin.

STIFF #2: CHRIS PAUL/RAJON RONDO FEUD
Each player was assessed a technical foul after refs had to separate the two in Boston's 97-87 win Nov. 1st. After the game the arguing and posturing continued. As Celtics' coach Doc Rivers pointed out, the 180 lb. fight rule should be invoked allowing the two to scrap because, "It's impossible for them to hurt each other." Maybe Paul should focus more on his teams' 1-3 start and not on the opposing teams' point guard's ability to, "respect me as a man."

STIFF #3: ESPN NBA HEADLINES
The Nuggets headline today reads, "Nuggets sink Pacers to avoid taking first loss." Compare that to the Suns' line reading, "Suns remain unbeaten, hand Heat first loss." Thanks for the backhanded compliment Worldwide Leader. At least Yahoo! Sports got it right, "Nuggets off to best start in 24 years." Maybe I'm being too picky.

STIFF #4: STEVE NASH'S MINUTES
When has it EVER been considered a good idea to play a 35 year-old (36 yrs on February 7th) point guard 36.8 minutes per game? Nash is on pace to average a career-high in the minutes department. And while Nash has averaged 77 games played in five full seasons with the Suns, his chronic back issues could rear its ugly head out early at this rate.

STIFF #5: PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS
Sure starting the season off 2-3 is no big deal, but when head coach Nate McMillan begins openly questioning the teams' effort to the media ... look out.
