Sam Cassell??
"It sounds as though the Denver Nuggets may sign free agent point guard Sam Cassell in the near future. According to various reports, Cassell will sign with Denver for the veteran's minimum, with the idea that he'll be able to start training to be an NBA head coach under George Karl, who coached Cassell in Milwaukee. Seems like an ideal situation for Cassell, playing alongside Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson. The Nuggets can now claim a near-monopoly on players who look for their own shot at the expense of all else."

This is an unspeakably miserable move... I really hate Sam, the man is a skeleton who takes bad shots and doesn't pass. Oh man. Maybe I'm wrong about that 8th seed.

How can you hate this?
First off, the man does the testicle dance. That’s brilliance in itself.
Secondly, this addresses our biggest problem — leadership. We need someone to sit Melo down and say “Son, being drunk, fat and lazy is no way to go through life”. Cassell is a proven leader and someone Melo will respect. I love it.
He sucks on D, he’s a ballhog, but the man can hit the outside shot and he can be a team leader. I’m not expecting him to start — hell, anything over 15 mpg would be a bad idea — but he’s EXACTLY what this team needs.

I love the testicle dance, but...
I am not interested in Sam Cassell joining the Nuggets. I agree that the Nuggets have a gaping hole in the on court leadership department, but I believe if Sam rolls into town and starts barking at everyone they will just tune him out. I would. Cassell is not a factor on the floor and I have to wonder about what kind of pull he would have on a new team, who does not necessarily like him, from a leadership stand point. Yes he won a ring last year, but he was far more of a hindrance on the floor than an asset. Sam has had a nice career, but I do not think he carries the cache to roll into a place like Denver and instantly become a team leader.
I mentioned that I am not sure how much other players like Cassell. Kenyon Matrin and Cassell got into it a few years ago when Sam played for the Wolves and Cassell threw the ball at him. If I remember it I am sure Kenyon does too.
If the Nuggets are going to sign a former Clipper point guard I saw they should go after Shaun Livingston. A two year, $3 million contract should be enough to get him into town and it would be a low risk high reward deal much like the Nuggets have been seeking out this offseason. I would love to see a healthy Livingston alongside J.R., Melo, a healthy Kenyon and a healthy Nene. Of course, that is a lot to ask for Livingston, Kenyon and Nene to all be healthy at any point in time, let alone an entire season.
On Cassell
We’re going to have to agree to disagree on that one.
As for Livingston, I’ve been screaming for that for YEARS now. Sadly, I’m starting to think his career is over before it even started.

exactly
thats exactly right. sam cassell will not have any sway on the behaviour of studs like melo, AI and k-mart. When I say studs I don’t necessarily mean all-stars, I mean they are the sorts of guys that will have no interest in the guidance of a aged point guard with rapidly deteriorating abilities. i can KINDA see the fact that he fills a hole in the point guard position but there is no way he would be an elder-statesman type figure in Denver. He’s a bit of a joke really. and yeah the fact that he got into an altercation with k mart wont help.
I’ve always hated Sam Cassell. Yeah, he has had a really nice career and I specifically remember him being a huge factor in our early playoff exits in both 04 when he was a T-Wolf and 06 as a Clipper. But the guy really needs to retire now, not try to come into Denver and be an immediate on court leader. Just can’t happen in my eyes. And as many of you have pointed out, I don’t think a lot of our current players would respond well to having Sam on the team. I remember that fight he had with Kenyon Martin quite well. It was our home opener against Minn. during the 04-05 season, and things got pretty heated during that incident. I really think that we need a starting quality PG for AC to back up, but Sam Cassell is not it.
