I'll Have a Miller

Apparently the fire sale has begun in Memphis.  Reports on ESPN.com are claiming the Grizzlies are sending Pau Gasol to the Lakers in exchange for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittendon and cap filler.  (I guess the Lakers have a one Gasol limit because they are sending the draft rights to Pau’s brother Marc to Memphis as part of the deal.)  The same report states that the long rumored deal of Stromile Swift to New Jersey for Jason Collins will be completed as well.

Now this is pure wishful thinking on my part, not based on published reports of negotiations, but if the Grizzlies are in a giving mood I want the Nuggets to get a piece of that action.  In the wake of yesterday’s Artest rumors I started looking around the league for similarly priced players who could help the Nuggets and the best option I found was Mike Miller who happens to play for Memphis.

Miller is a supremely talented shooter, but is also a pretty complete player.  He can penetrate, pass and rebound.  He is a little weak on defense, but he would be a much lower risk addition than Artest and would be easier to insert into the rotation.

In order to land Miller I would offer Najera, J.R. Smith and a pick.  If Memphis rejects that I would throw in Kleiza and Wafer in place of J.R.

From a financial standpoint the Nuggets would be adding a little salary for this season, and a lot of salary over the next two seasons.  However, if AI opts out as he said he would and the Nuggets resign him for a reasonable amount they could still have a lower payroll next season.

How about your thoughts on one of those deals?  Should the Nuggets trade for Mike Miller?

Miller Time
I think they should definately try to get Miller before Artest.

We need a PROVEN threat from downtown (Miller), not guys that have shown glimpses of being good from 3 point land at times (J.R., Kleiza). I say go for it!

I voted for "Miller would not help them"

Not because I don't think Miller would help them - I think he would - but because despite how I know I should feel, I really like both Smith and Kleiza.  I'm a sucker for the flashes they've shown me, even though I feel they both ended up being liabilities in the playoffs last year.

I'm curious to know if you read the Westword article about this team.  It's startling to read that this is the third-best start in franchise history, and we're in the #8 spot.  I still think we're in a good position to win our division but our shot at getting home court for the first round took a BIG hit with the Lakers' acquisition of Gasol.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: THE FUTURE OF THE NBPA
If the NBA owners opening proposal for the new collective bargaining agreement is any indication, we're heading for a lockout in 2011 and after that, smaller contracts, smaller salaries and less revenue shared with the players.

STIFF #2: THE CLIPPERS
After correctly kicking Mike Dunleavy upstairs and rightly installing Kim Hughes as head coach, why are rumors of Isiah Thomas joining the Clips circling around already?

STIFF #3: THE EASTERN CONFERENCE
Rumors of the re-birth of the Eastern Conference have been greatly exaggerated.  Yes, the Cavaliers are awesome but the sixth playoff seed might be sub-.500.  And do you think any of the West's top six teams fear the Celtics, Magic or Hawks?  No chance.

STIFF #4: ANKLE INJURIES
First Carmelo Anthony.  Then Chauncey Billups. And now possibly Arron Afflalo?  Tape those ankles up, dammit!

STIFF #5: NEW JERSEY NETS
4-46 and losers to the lowly Pistons on Saturday night.  But Lawrence Frank was the problem, right?
