Current and Past Nuggets Trade Rumors

I noticed a new trade rumor as well as an old one floating around the internet involving the Denver Nuggets and figured it might be fun to address both of them.

Talking Trade with Oklahoma City?

The search for an additional big man continues as Denver has been listed as a possible destination for both Joe Smith and Chris Wilcox of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Joe Smith would seem to be a no brainer, but he is pretty light in the rump and I would have to question his ability to play defense in the post.  Offensively, I think he would be a great fit as he can set screens, play unselfishly and drain the midrange jumper.  Wilcox is a more impressive physical specimen, but he is such an inconsistent player.  As with Smith, I question his ability to be a stout defender on the block.  He has the bulk, but I do not know if he has the heart.

The other issue is after having no problem with shipping Chucky Atkins out in exchange for almost anything I am now hesitant to deal him because of the horrible recent play by Anthony Carter.  Until either Carter changes his ways or a big man is seriously injured I do not do either one of those deals.

I am also not so sure that the Nuggets need to add another big man.  They can clearly survive a short term injury to one of their big men as we have seen Andersen, Martin and Melo miss time recently.  Making a trade for another big man might give the Nuggets management one less thing to worry about when they go to sleep at night, but I do not think it is a necessity.

Linas Kleiza for David Lee?

I also saw a report that the Nuggets were on the verge of acquiring David Lee from the Knicks for Kleiza, but George Karl convinced the front office that Kleiza was too valuable to trade away.  Kleiza is an important player for the Nuggets and over the past couple of weeks his three point shooting has come around and he has hit some big shots.  As we saw yesterday Lee is an absolute beast.  He is a great rebounder and scores all of his points in the paint.  You never have to worry about him settling for jumpers because he never does settle for jumpers.  Denver also needs to consider the possibility of Kleiza wanting to leave Denver after this season although he will be a restricted free agent.

Even though I personally would pull the trigger on that deal I can appreciate where Karl is coming from.  The Nuggets do not have a player like Kleiza on the roster and having his perimeter offense on the bench is reassuring.  Also, Lee somewhat duplicates Kenyon Martin.  While Kenyon is not the rebounder that Lee is and he plays more on the perimeter offensively than Lee they are roughly the same size (or maybe even exactly the same size as both are listed at 6’9” and 240 pounds) and I can understand why Karl would balk at giving up a unique player for one that he sees as somewhat of a duplicate.

Balkman & Lee were the only good things about the Knicks

Crazy to me that they’d want to get rid of both of them. They may be somewhat limited physically, but you can’t teach heart, and heart can help win championships.

Anyway, Kleiza’s folks live in NY so he should jump at that deal. Then we’d just need another perimeter threat. Isn’t Big Shot Bob available?? He’d almost guarantee a shot at a title, even though he’s one of my least favorite all-time players!

Not Kleiza's choice...

I don’t think Kleiza can decide to trade himself, but that would be an interesting wrinkle to the NBA…

Nuggets choices...

I heard a rumor through a buddy that was obviously lying to me…said Denver was looking at Andreis Biedris (sp?) from the Warriors.

I’ve heard some other names tossed around from fans and from the local papers mentioned here as well: Chris Kaman, David Lee, Joe Smith, Chris Wilcox, Camby, and Nenad Kristic.

I really would have liked to see McDyess stay here and this wouldn’t be an issue, but we all know how and why that played out how it did.

I couldn’t really come up with any younger big men that I’d like to see here for a couple reasons:

1.) Nene is playing so well and developing finally that I’d hate to see his minutes cut.
2.) I love our roster.

I agree with Jeremy that while it’d be nice to have the insurance of a big man I don’t really want to see Denver give up too much to bring somebody in – and with some of our trade pieces (Atkins, Balkman, Kleiza, Draft Pick) Denver could really bring in a decent player that may take minutes from Nene and KMart…while that would be good to get them rest – what cost could it have on the team?

I also don’t really want an injury to force Denver down the road to make a desperate move so it’s a total Catch 22. Had McDyess stayed this would not be an issue. Damn the luck sometimes.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 11/4 by Nate)

STIFF #1: DAN HAWKINS
After predicting 10 wins for his club before the season the Buffs find themselves just 2-6 with four games to play. To add injury to insult ... former 5-star prized recruit Darrell Scott announced he'll be transferring to UCLA after just 1 1/2 seasons at CU. Another black eye for the program and hopefully the final nail in Hawk's coaching coffin.

STIFF #2: CHRIS PAUL/RAJON RONDO FEUD
Each player was assessed a technical foul after refs had to separate the two in Boston's 97-87 win Nov. 1st. After the game the arguing and posturing continued. As Celtics' coach Doc Rivers pointed out, the 180 lb. fight rule should be invoked allowing the two to scrap because, "It's impossible for them to hurt each other." Maybe Paul should focus more on his teams' 1-3 start and not on the opposing teams' point guard's ability to, "respect me as a man."

STIFF #3: ESPN NBA HEADLINES
The Nuggets headline today reads, "Nuggets sink Pacers to avoid taking first loss." Compare that to the Suns' line reading, "Suns remain unbeaten, hand Heat first loss." Thanks for the backhanded compliment Worldwide Leader. At least Yahoo! Sports got it right, "Nuggets off to best start in 24 years." Maybe I'm being too picky.

STIFF #4: STEVE NASH'S MINUTES
When has it EVER been considered a good idea to play a 35 year-old (36 yrs on February 7th) point guard 36.8 minutes per game? Nash is on pace to average a career-high in the minutes department. And while Nash has averaged 77 games played in five full seasons with the Suns, his chronic back issues could rear its ugly head out early at this rate.

STIFF #5: PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS
Sure starting the season off 2-3 is no big deal, but when head coach Nate McMillan begins openly questioning the teams' effort to the media ... look out.
