Nuggets get a Bargain in the McDyess Buyout

The Nuggets played hardball and ended up saving a ton of money in the Antonio McDyess buyout.  This blog post by Chris Tomasson over at the Rocky Mountain News claims that the final buyout amount was only $6 million dollars.  McDyess was owed almost $15 million after 10% trade kicker was triggered as part of his contract.  The Nuggets will only have three million dollars of that almost $15 million on their cap this year and next year (the buyout is split up over the length of the contract that was bought out).

As a result the Nuggets have gone from a payroll of $75.9 million after the trade to a payroll of only $71.15 million, which is abut one million dollars over the luxury tax line.  The Nuggets could get under the tax in a deal involving Steven Hunter and/or Chucky Atkins.  The bad news is they would probably have to give up a draft pick in any such deal.  I hope Kronke is happy with chopping about $17 million off of the team salary and does not force the front office to part with a first rounder to get all the way under the tax limit.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though.  Today the story is the Nuggets pulled off a great deal in the buyout with McDyess.

I'm glad they got a good deal;

however, the more I think about McDyess’ refusal to play the more infuriating it is. Seriously…f’ that guy! What a stupid pos.

GO BRONCOS!!!

i agree

if it was me, I would have forced his hand, let him retire. I use to like and respect Dice, but not now. But I am glad if does work out for the Nuggets. But still I think he is pos, also

somethings wrong, Trying to conquer these fears i thought were gone. And it's been so long, I'm dying to live in a world i don't belong

I can understand why he wouldn't..

Plus this will allow Denver to use Samb off the bench instead of him. Samb is young and athletic and I am excited to see him potentially get some minutes.

Jeremy

Great point about the Nuggets getting a huge lift from shedding all this salary. If the Nuggets don’t try to trade away, and keep their picks, that will keep them from getting worse as the years go on provided they pick wisely in the players they choose (never an easy task for anybody). And for the Nuggets to only play 1 million in luxury tax? Hell, after they started at 17 million in luxury tax payments, that’s a great job by all concerned.

Found an interesting article via True Hoop

Terry Frei complains that McDyess was let off the hook for not returning to Denver. Actually, I would say the Nuggs and Dice let each other off the hook. It made cutting costs possible for the Nuggs, and allowed Dice to leave from a place he didn’t want to stay in. But whatever.

STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. THE NUGGETS AT HOME
How is it possible that a Nuggets team with this much talent can be 7-5 at home?! Things have gotten so bad that fans are clamoring for J.R. Smith to return.

2. CARMELO ANTHONY
Kobe Bryant plays through any and all ailments. Melo uses any and ailments as an excuse not to play.

3. KEVIN LOVE
Just when the T'Wolves are looking better, Love stomps on Luis Scola and lands himself a two-game suspension.

4. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
The 'Cats have lost 11 straight and are now 3-21 ... in the Eastern Conference! This is what happens when you let an underwear salesman with a Hitler mustache run your team.

5. MIKE BROWN
Dr. Bunsen Honeydew (Google it!) got himself a one-game suspension for making contact with a referee.
