Pickaxe and Roll Film Room: Focus on the Nuggets Defense

I have made a pretty big deal this season about the defensive improvement we have seen in the Denver Nuggets.  I was going to put some clips together after the Lakers game, but when news of the Chauncey Billups trade began to leak out I decided to wait until we had some footage with Chauncey in action.

We all suspected that swapping Allen Iverson for Billups would only make the defense better and we were indeed correct.  Chauncey has tremendous defensive instincts that allow him to not only cover his man and fit in to the Nuggets defensive scheme right away, but he has also shown the ability freelance within the defensive system without compromising its integrity.

The question is what are the Nuggets doing this year that they have not done in the past?  Over the previous few seasons the Nuggets have shown an ability to play good defense in stretches, but it was based more on increased effort than funneling that effort through a scheme where they all worked together and understood thier responsibilities.  They used to look like there was absolutely no organization to the defense whatsoever.

This year the Nuggets are playing a completely different brand of defense.  They have improved in four key areas.  First of all they are maintaining their positioning and responsibilities nearly 100% of the time.  It used to be a common occurrence that an opponent would flash into the lane or run the baseline with no reaction from the Nuggets defense whatsoever.  Now you can go an entire game where no opponent motion goes unnoticed.  It is a night and day difference.

Secondly, they rotate like they share a collective purpose.  Rarely do you see two guys running at a shooter or conversely no one running at a shooter which was another hallmark of Nugget defense in the past.

Thirdly, they have extended their pressure out to a step beyond the three point line.  Ball pressure is a key to playing good defense, but in the past Denver defenders have simply stood a few feet in front of their man and allowed them to survey the entire floor while the decide what to do.  There are still instances where someone will sag off of their man, but you get the feeling it is more by design this season rather than due to disinterest.

Lastly, the Nuggets are playing the pick and roll very aggressively.  They are jumping the ball handler and sending help before the offense gains the advantage.  Last season when the ball handler came off of a screen he had a lane to do whatever he wanted.  Not so in 2008-09.

Below you will see evidence of these changes in the first installment of the Pickaxe and Roll Film Room for the new season.  I start out with a couple of examples of how the Nuggets defended last season from a game against the Mavericks to show how far they had to go.  That is followed by clip after clip of stout defense from game five against the Mavs, which was Chauncey’s first game back with the Nuggets.

There you have it.  The Nuggets could still work on beating cutters across the lane to the spot and their transition defense, but after the other advances we have seen from last year I am not going to complain too loudly.

Oh yea, one last thing.  I hate to say I told you so, but the Nuggets have proven to be a better defensive team without Marcus Camby and Eduardo Najera.  Take that national media!

is blocked at my work. Dammit.

I’ve been thoroughly impressed with our D this season. Like Jeremy, I thought the Camby loss would be not nearly as bad as many thought, but I wasn’t as adament about it as Jeremy was. Gotta give you props there man.

One thing that has me concerned, and I believe Jeremy brought it up in the Bobcats recap, is the constant switching on defense. If I remember correctly, we tried this last year as well and after ~10 games we gave up on the idea (because it was a bad one) and returned to traditional. If we can keep the intensity up and limit the switching, wow.

I think this team is going to prove me really, REALLY wrong when all is said and done. Games like the Bobcats game were losses a year ago because the team wasn’t mentally tough enough. Hell, we even competed on the second night of a back-to-back two weeks ago — I can’t remember the last time we did that. Tonight is an important win for us. I’m already writing off Friday’s game (and it’s gonna be painful….God I hate the Celtics). Come home to face Minnesota at 5-4, and we’re in a good place. home against the Bucks, @ SA, @ Lakers, home against the Bulls. We could be 9-5 or 8-6 at that point. Not bad at all.

Great Video!

This Nuggets team isn’t as exciting to watch as last year’s team; however, ultimately they are much more satisfying (and less frustrating). Hopefully they are able to continue to improve throughout the season and will be able to muster a round one victory.

I too am getting mightily sick

of every away-team’s colour commentator scoffing “har har, worst defensive team in the universe and they gave away marcus camby former defensive blah blah for bag of peanuts blah blah har har”. definitely hugely enouraging signs here.

worried about out big man siutation though. apparently george karl requested for a Juwan Howard but Kronke said no because he wants to get under the luxury. Great to have such committment from our suits to winning a championship!

Great video

DO you have any analysis of how getting Billups has helped or hurt the half court offense? Just curious, being in Portland I haven’t gotten to see any Nuggets games in a while, and last year our half court offense consisted of giving the ball to AI and seeing if he could do anything with it.

I will also say I was one who was ticked they got rid of Camby, not so much about the defense, more that they didn’t get anything for him and I was impressed by how good he was in the community. But I will agree, defensively, we seem to be playing better team defense without him.

Billups on offense

An analysis of the half court offense is certainly on my to do list.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 11/20 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: THE NEW JERSEY NETS
The bad get worse.  Starting out 0-12, these Nets are doing a great imitation of the 1997-98, 11-win Nuggets.  I might have to pay someone to take my Nets tickets when they come to Pepsi Center.

STIFF #2: ALLEN IVERSON
I hate to kick one of my favorite players while he's down, but when even the Knicks won't sign you, you belong on the Stiff List.

STIFF #3: THE SAN ANTONIO SPURS
Richard Jefferson?  Antonio McDyess?  DeJuan Blair?  A healthy Manu Ginobili?  Big deal.  What idiot thought these guys would be neck-and-neck with the Lakers and way better than the Nuggets?  (Oh wait, that would be me.)

STIFF #4: TRACY MCGRADY
After years of suspect handling of his injuries making it virtually impossible for the Rockets to trade him, McGrady goes head-to-head with Rockets coach Rick Adelman demanding to know what his "future" with the organization is.  Tracy, take your league-high $23.2 million and shut the @#$% up.

STIFF #5: DAVID KAHN
Defiant and stubborn as ever, the Timberwolves "president" defended his offseason moves (you know, drafting two point guards before Brandon Jennings not named Brandon Jennings) by proclaiming that the Wolves will be active during next summer's free agent market.  I just pray that Wolves owner Glen Taylor never fires this guy so the Nuggets have four guaranteed wins each season.
