Juwan Howard Signs With Nugs

One year, minimum, non-guaranteed.  This is great.  He doesn't have much left in the tank, but he can play 10 mpg if needed.  He provides front-court depth (which is desperately needed).  He's also, most importantly, a locker room influence.  He's played with Nene before so hopefully they can work together.  Even if he never plays a single minute with the team, if he can just help Nene, he's worth whatever we pay him and then some.  The only problem is, this gives us 13 guaranteed contracts and a few non-guaranteed.  If the team is dumping salary, that's an interesting dillemma.  I wonder if we'll see a two-guaranteed for one deal go down?

wow...

I didn’t see this coming but I love it! Another solid big man, veteran, former Nugget, good to have on this team. I like the move!

Jeremy, do you see Smush Parker making this team? I would like to see him start at PG with A.I. at SG and JR off the bench. He had some productive years with the Lakers and is a big bodied point who can play D.

Smush

I think either Parker or Cleaves will break camp with the team and be on the roster for the first couple of weeks until they can determine whether or not Atkins is healthy. With Atkins and Carter on guaranteed deals and AI and J.R. able to play the point I do not see any way the Nuggets use some of their limited financial resources to keep either Parker or Cleaves beyond the date where contracts become guaranteed (sometime in early December).

Juwan Howard

Howard only played in 50 games last season in Dallas and averaged a paltry seven minutes per game. I have no idea if he is washed up or not. If he is brought in solely as a locker room guy that is fine. He will be valuable in that role.

On the other hand. He is deadly (at least he used to be) from the free throw line extended. I see him potentially being a nice weapon off the bench playing the pick and pop game and getting short kick out or swing passes and drilling shot after shot. I do not know if he can still play enough defense to stay on the floor, but if he can, he will be an asset.

Juwan's performance

Over the last few years he has really declined, I would say more than the average age-related decline of vetaran bigs. I think we should have taken Theo Ratliff for front court veteran depth. Now we are stuck with a badly limited former All-Star. I don’t see him contributing anything meaningul beyong the locker-room.

Wow

I REALLY think you guys are missing the influence that Howard has on Nene. Rumor has it that they’re close friends and Howard has his ear. Nene is, quite frankly, the most critical player to the team this year. If Howard can keep Nene’s head on straight and keep him motivated, then he’s worth every cent and then some.

Juwan Howard was finished as an NBA caliber player two years ago. He’s living off reputation and past performances …. and in the present he’s hurting his teams.

Howard isn’t a guy you want on the court. If he’s been brought in to be a good locker room influence, I’m happy, he can do that and he can do it well. If he’s been brought in to play or to fill in should one of the bigs get injured, I’m unhappy because he isn’t good enough. I’d like another big man signed to play in front Howard.

Howard shouldn’t make it through camp.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: THE FUTURE OF THE NBPA
If the NBA owners opening proposal for the new collective bargaining agreement is any indication, we're heading for a lockout in 2011 and after that, smaller contracts, smaller salaries and less revenue shared with the players.

STIFF #2: THE CLIPPERS
After correctly kicking Mike Dunleavy upstairs and rightly installing Kim Hughes as head coach, why are rumors of Isiah Thomas joining the Clips circling around already?

STIFF #3: THE EASTERN CONFERENCE
Rumors of the re-birth of the Eastern Conference have been greatly exaggerated.  Yes, the Cavaliers are awesome but the sixth playoff seed might be sub-.500.  And do you think any of the West's top six teams fear the Celtics, Magic or Hawks?  No chance.

STIFF #4: ANKLE INJURIES
First Carmelo Anthony.  Then Chauncey Billups. And now possibly Arron Afflalo?  Tape those ankles up, dammit!

STIFF #5: NEW JERSEY NETS
4-46 and losers to the lowly Pistons on Saturday night.  But Lawrence Frank was the problem, right?
