Editor's Note:  joshhopp was able to watch the Nuggets/Jazz game online.  The information you need to watch games online is contained in the comments to this post.  Should you decide to download the software and visit the website joshhopp mentions Pickaxe and Roll is not responsible for any destruction that may befall your computer.  I am not saying anything will happen, I just don't want you complaining to me if something does.  Complain to joshhopp.  That being said, I just might have to try it.

Also, Nene was out due to a bruised elbow.  That was an injury I was not aware of until I read the game recap in the Rocky Mountain News this morning.  The injury is not serious.

Enough perfunctory jibber jabber.  Thanks to joshhopp for the insight.

We started small:

G: AC

G: D. Jones

F: LK

F: Melo

F: K-Mart

End of the first: AC was terrible in the first; he committed one or two atrocious turnovers, handing out a handfull of assists to D-Will.  But he did connect on a successful alley-oop to K-Mart while falling to the hardwood. The tone changed for the better as soon as Smush came on at about 6:00. K-Mart was nice in the first; he forced a few turnovers inside and got to the line a fair bit, in the process getting Ukur into early foul trouble, which was nice. LK was cold from downtown in the first, Melo looked committed on D.

End of the second: We start out sloppy and the Jazz start the quarter with a 7-0 run and Karl calls a hasty time out. Smush responds by throwing the ball directly out of bounds when play restarts. JR steadies the ship with a long 3 and a steal. But then Utah produces a 9-0 run! No inside presence whatsoever, Kosta Koufus walzting around the paint grabbing offensive boards. The quarter ends with a clear run to the basket for Smush who throws the damn ball away. 58-51 to the Jazz, and, bugger, I just realised I've got class now (its 1.20pm here).

Not feeling too good about things. Our point guard situation is dire, our inside game was non-existent although thus far neither Nene or Birdman have seen any minutes. JR was superb off the bench, I think he got 9 points on 4-4 in like 4 minutes, and Balkman is just so active on both ends. The Jazz are just a class act, forcing mistakes and converting on offense. We are in with a chance though; I'll check back in an hour to see if I can contribute anything else. Sorry about the abrupt end to this, hopefully someone else can comment.

Write respectfully of your SB Nation community and yourself.

When I log back in UTA are up 5 after an “Memo” 3 pointer: Jazz 81-76 with 3 remaining in the 3rd. A Carter steal cuts the lead to 3, then JR takes makes an intercept and gets to line, sinking 1 (Wow! Just heard Monta Ellis is suspended for 30 games! NICE!). With 44 seconds left Klieza passes up the opportunity to take the lead by bricking a wide open 3. With 9 seconds left and after a nice AC floater for 2, our starting PG fouls D-Will on a made jump shot, allowing UTA to take a 5 point lead into the 4th. Really disappointing letdown there late in the 3rd.

4th quarter

Can we erase the 5 point deficit? Shot clock violations don’t help. Patterson fast break dunks might. Mateen Cleaves pulls a 3 point play out of somewhere! Bench coming up big (actually, it’s hard to tell where our “bench” begins). We are shooting 54% from the field, the Jazz are at a similairly impressive clip. With 8:56 left we are down by 2. Feelin good!

It’s Ruben Pat who ties it up for us at 90 apiece, but he refuses to convert on either of his next two free throws to give us the lead. It’s Juwan Howard who takes that honour (who ARE these guys??). See-sawing back and forth for the next few minutes. 98-95 DEN lead with 5:30 remaining. Ashton Kutcher looking good. Wait. Scratch that.

LK coming up big late with a 3 and a put back basket. Balkman is gifted a pair of free throws and misses both! Guess he wants to keep it interesting. With 3:41 left, we have a 3 point lead. Wierd incident: JR on the fast break goes up for what would have been a thunderous dunks but kinda tips his foot on the trailing reserve Jazz guard; the foul is called even though no actual contact is committed. Wouldn’t be happy if I was a Jazz fan, JR getting carried away by his own athleticism.

Can’t seem to break away. 2 made JR free throws are answered by a 3 point play for CJ Miles. 3 point ball game. LK MISSES TWO FREE THROWS FOR &*(#$ SAKE! 1 point game with 31 seconds left in the game. Ruben Patterson is technically fouled, thereby awarding a free throw to Ashton. We are throwing this game away. Tied up. JR gets to the line. Why not try sinking them? He does. CJ Miles draws a foul at the other end. He sinks them. Tied up. We are going to overtime. We had it, and we lost it.

Overtime

Ruben Patterson is hanging his head in shame. Hang it lower Rubes.

JR misses a wide open 3. Denver commits a defensive 3 second violation. Cleaves bucket. LK put back. 4 point Denver lead. Balkman awarded yet another pair of free throws, wouldn’t it be nice if he could hit them. 1 of 2. A wild pass by LK on offense goes out of bounds. Balkman getting angry on defence. He feels like a Nuggets already. 3 point game with a minute left. More Jazz free throws. 2 point game with 21 seconds. JR Smith is the man who needs to hit the clutch free throws. Hits them both! 4 point game with 20 left. Kosta Koufus gets a bucket, he has been looking real good, we could have had him if we kept the 20th pick. Smith misses BOTH FREE THROWS. 2 point game with 10 seconds left. The NBA gods must really hate me. We force a turnover when Jazz inbounds it.

Denver wins. By 1. Some moron (Cleaves I think) almost fouled Koufus on his 3 point attempt even though we had a 4 point lead with like 2 seconds left.

Some good signs from our bench guys, no time from Nene, Birdman (I’m pretty sure) or AI, although Boozer didn’t play much at all either. Overall, this didn’t look like a team that is going to topple completely out of basketball relevance.

Watching games online

Often the commentary is slowed down, or worse, Chinese (just kidding), every 5 minutes or so it freezes up for a few moments, and occaisionally it just flat out won’t work. The other site you can use is www.ppnba.com. Click on “English” near the top of the screen. Most of the channels require you to download software, which is free. I’m not saying you won’t get a whole bunch of spyware or whatever by using this stuff, but I haven’t had any major problems with it and living outside the US its a necessity if I want to follow NBA. Good times.

THE STIFF LIST (as of 11/4 by Nate)

STIFF #1: DAN HAWKINS
After predicting 10 wins for his club before the season the Buffs find themselves just 2-6 with four games to play. To add injury to insult ... former 5-star prized recruit Darrell Scott announced he'll be transferring to UCLA after just 1 1/2 seasons at CU. Another black eye for the program and hopefully the final nail in Hawk's coaching coffin.

STIFF #2: CHRIS PAUL/RAJON RONDO FEUD
Each player was assessed a technical foul after refs had to separate the two in Boston's 97-87 win Nov. 1st. After the game the arguing and posturing continued. As Celtics' coach Doc Rivers pointed out, the 180 lb. fight rule should be invoked allowing the two to scrap because, "It's impossible for them to hurt each other." Maybe Paul should focus more on his teams' 1-3 start and not on the opposing teams' point guard's ability to, "respect me as a man."

STIFF #3: ESPN NBA HEADLINES
The Nuggets headline today reads, "Nuggets sink Pacers to avoid taking first loss." Compare that to the Suns' line reading, "Suns remain unbeaten, hand Heat first loss." Thanks for the backhanded compliment Worldwide Leader. At least Yahoo! Sports got it right, "Nuggets off to best start in 24 years." Maybe I'm being too picky.

STIFF #4: STEVE NASH'S MINUTES
When has it EVER been considered a good idea to play a 35 year-old (36 yrs on February 7th) point guard 36.8 minutes per game? Nash is on pace to average a career-high in the minutes department. And while Nash has averaged 77 games played in five full seasons with the Suns, his chronic back issues could rear its ugly head out early at this rate.

STIFF #5: PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS
Sure starting the season off 2-3 is no big deal, but when head coach Nate McMillan begins openly questioning the teams' effort to the media ... look out.
